saying our goodbyesDon’t lose hope. You’re almost there! For

some of us, it means the end of another semes-ter. For others, it means the end of an era.

While most of us here at ESCAPE will be continuing on at OU, our Assistant Editor Kate McPherson will be graduating and moving on to bigger and better things. Our editor’s photo this week is a tribute to her as we wish her good luck on her journey. And we must say, she’s looking pretty fine in her senior pictures.

For those of you who are graduating, check out our tips on decorating your graduation cap (pg. 6). If you’re sticking around, be sure to dis-cover a few ways you can occupy yourself this summer (pg. 4).

There will be a few changes in ESCAPE’s future next semester, but the details are still under wraps. All we can tell you is to look for us each Thursday. We’ll see you around!

top 3 look ahead:Summer is upon us and with it comes a whole slew of movies, books and music to help get us in the mood. The past summer had its cin-

ematic ups (“The Heat,” “The Conjuring,” “Blue Jasmine”), musical lows (Robin Thicke “Blurred Lines,” everything One Direction), and televised in-betweens (“Sharknado”).

It was a fun year, but summer 2014 is already shaping up to be more of a thrill ride with a whole slew of pop culture events waiting to be discovered. Well, that and a few million superhero movies you’re most likely already hyped about.

So whether you’re ready to see the X-Men of past and present fi ghting together or force yourself to sit through a movie called “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” here’s a guide for some pop culture events we’re most excited about:

movies

One look at Angelina Jolie in costume as the “Mistress of All

Evil” and you would think she was born for the role of Malefi cent. From her piercing eyes to her sultry voice, Jolie

perfectly embodies what made the wom-an so menacing in the 1959 animated

fi lm. Add in the moody tone of the trailer and an impressive cast including Elle Fanning and Sharlto Copley, and

Malefi cent is looking like a dark fantasy right out of our dreams.

maleficent (may 30)

You won’t fi nd any love triangles, dystopian settings or

evil empires in this young adult fl ick. Based on John Green’s novel, “The

Fault In Our Stars” tells the un-orthodox love story between Hazel and Gus, two teenagers who meet at a cancer support group. Witty, unconventional and endearing,

Green’s novel holds a special place in the hearts of readers who fell in love with the fi ctional couple, but

Green has constantly stated the fi lm truly captures the heart and spirit of

his book.

the fault in our stars (june 6)

Already a smash hit on Broadway, “Jersey Boys” tells

the real-life story of The Four Sea-sons. While it may seem like just

another adaptation, director Clint Eastwood has done something few directors have ever been willing to do when it comes to movie musi-cals: hire the original Broadway

cast. With its theatre pedigree still intact, “Jersey Boys” might just be

the surprise hit of the summer.

Already a prolifi c screenwrit-er for fi lms such as “Skyfall,”

“Sweeney Todd” and “Gladiator,” John Logan’s new project is this

horror series starring Josh Hartnett and Eva Green. “Penny Dreadful”

features some of literature’s most fa-mously terrifying characters such as Dr. Frankenstein’s creature, Dorian Gray and Dracula clashing in Vic-torian London. With such a crazy

concept and high production value, “Penny Dreadful” is shaping to be a nice addition to television’s current

obsession with horror.

penny dreadful(may 11 on showtime)

Based on Tom Perrotta’s 2011 novel, “The Leftovers” takes place in the wake of a

global “rapture” and centers on the people who didn’t make the cut. Left behind in a suburban

community, the “leftovers” must begin to rebuild their lives. If that premise wasn’t interesting enough, add in Justin Theroux

and Liv Tyler as members of the community, and we’re ready to see what “The Leftovers” has to

offer.

the leftovers(June 15 on hbo)

For six seasons, “True Blood” has managed

to draw viewers in with it’s Southern Gothic storyline and incredible ensemble. Now, the time has come to say farewell

to the town of Bon Temps and the characters we’ve come to love. For the seventh and fi nal

season, we’ll get to see the outcome of the bloody war be-tween vampires and humans in

the fi ght for dominance.

true blood(June 22 on hbo)

2: The Second One,” here’s a guide for some pop culture events we’re most excited about:

The saucy Brit has never been one to shy away from

controversy. If the past few months have been any indication, Allen is just getting started. From “Hard Out Here” taking on sexism in

the music industry to “Sheezus” name-checking almost every

female pop star, Allen is sparing no one on her way to the top. Based on her impressive set of singles

so far, “Sheezus” seems poised to put Allen right back on top of the

musical food chain.

By this point, the duo has perfected its brand of raw,

blues rock with a modern touch. Judging from its most recent batch

of singles, “Fever” and “True Blue,” the pair is ready to try

something a little different. A little less funky and a little more psyche-delic, The Black Keys’ new album might just be the soundtrack of the

summer.

the black keys, “true blue” (may 13)

Wistful and haunting, raw and honest, First Aid Kit has

proven itself as the female alterna-tive to Fleet Foxes. Originally from Stockholm, the sister duo’s vocal harmonies and folk-infl uenced

songwriting are unparalleled. With this upcoming release, the sisters added on a 13-piece orchestra

for what they call a “bigger, more fulfi lling sound.” Just listen to the

fi rst single “My Silver Lining,” and you’ll be strumming along with these sisters all summer long.

During dead week and finals, my fellow graduating seniors should be focused on one thing and one thing only: How to decorate your graduation caps. Forget those grades you worked hard to earn

and those classes your advisers somehow magically got you into. No, my friends, at this point, it’s all about the cap.

Wondering where to start? First, figure out who you are. Your cap should reflect you — here are some ideas. if you’re ...

... a pop culture fiend: Put a quote from your favorite TV show or movie on your cap. For example, channel your inner Bluth with, “There’s always money in the banana stand!” It’ll definitely reassure your parents that graduating without a job is no big deal.

… a joiner: Reflect your organizations on your cap. Greek letters, logos and stickers representing your clubs are all good choices.

… an out-of-state student: Put your state’s flag on your cap. If you’re from Texas, recognize you won’t be the only one with the lone star, but if you’re truly Texan, you’ll definitely be OK with that — the more representation, the better, am I right?

… an artist or designer: Use your skills to put a cool design or lettering on your cap. Whether it’s an original or you’re tracing your favorite Lilly Pulitzer print (no judgment), this is a colorful and unique way to stand out.

… a total cliche: You have two options — “thanks, Mom and Dad!” or “Hire me!” C’mon. You can do better than that. Either express the sentiments in a funnier way (example: a picture of Ariel with ‘I want to be where the people are employed’) or just randomly put a bunch of rhinestones on and hope for the best.

If you’re looking for supplies for decoration, check out Hobby Lobby or Michaels —the wide vari-ety of crafting supplies carried at those stores means you’re more likely to find something creative that suits your fancy than if you start somewhere like Wal-Mart or Target. You should definitely sketch out your design on a piece of paper to scale before you start hot gluing or Mod Podge-ing.

The Grumpycouch Potato

May has finally arrived, and that means the dog days of winter and spring behind us. You’ve traded your snow goggles for sunglasses and your ponchos for tube tops.

Nothing goes better with this turn of the season than some sun-kissed pop culture. Put away your textbooks, and bust open that latest issue of “Cosmopolitan.” Stop moping around to Death Cab for Cutie, and perk up with some Local Natives.

the beach boysYou had to see this one com-

ing. While a lot of The Beach Boys’ early work was much heavier, they also knew how to have a good time. Representative of surf culture at the time, The Beach Boys are sure to put you in the mood for any number of summer destinations. Whether you’re road tripping to “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” or surfing to “California Girls,” The Beach Boys are essential for any sum-mer playlist.

“jaws” (1975)A lot of you are likely to spend most

of your summer swimming in the ocean or tanning on the beach, right? Not if Steven Spielberg has anything to say about it. In this classic thriller, the beach town of Amity Island is plagued by a giant man-eating shark. A classic in every sense of the word, “Jaws” is a thrill ride from start to finish — and it’ll make you think twice about going into the water.

“True blood” (2008 to present)

There is no show better for binge-watching than “True Blood.” The story of the co-existence of vam-pire and humans in the Louisiana town of Bon Temps, “True Blood” is filled with creepy story lines, wacky char-acters and endless buckets of blood. Basically a Southern Gothic soap opera, “True Blood” makes for a sexy, witty and unabashedly peculiar watch.
