ERIS A DWARF PLANET
By
Jonathan Ryan Cooper
What is a Dwarf Planet? What is a Dwarf Planet? A dwarf planet is a celestial body which meets the
following four criteria:
• It must orbit the SunIt must orbit the Sun • It must have sufficient mass that its It must have sufficient mass that its
gravity causes it to be round or gravity causes it to be round or almost round in shape almost round in shape
• It must not be another object's It must not be another object's satellitesatellite
• It must not have cleared the It must not have cleared the neighborhood around its orbitneighborhood around its orbit

PLUTO
USED TO BE
A
PLANET…PLANET…
Why is Pluto NOT a planet? Why is Pluto NOT a planet? In August 2006, the IAU (International Astronomical Union) voted
on a definition of planet:
1. Must be spherical from its own gravity
2. Must be in orbit around the sun (not around another planet)
3. Must have cleared its orbital path of debris
Pluto met the first 2 criteria, but did not meet the Third. Pluto's orbit takes it into the Kuiper Belt, which has thousands of small objects (debris). If Pluto were discovered today, no one would
even consider calling it a planet because it's clearly a Kuiper-belt object.
Charon – Double Dwarf PlanetCharon – Double Dwarf Planet
Pluto has 3 moons. Pluto has 3 moons.
Two of them are tiny. Two of them are tiny.
They are called Nix and Hydra. They are called Nix and Hydra.
The other moon is called Charon. The other moon is called Charon.
It is much larger than the others. It is much larger than the others.
