It was dream come true for R ajiv Ven-katraman and Geitha DevarajaRao

when they received their gift vouch-ers from Melody Queen P. Sushee-

la. Both were adjudged the best maleand female singers respectively at theVoice of Virtusa, first-ever karaoke com-petition held to showcase the talents ofVirtusa employees.

Conducted in two levels, the talenthunt had 50 contestants in the auditionround, which was short down to eightfinalists.

It was a tough competition and Iwould have awarded prizes to all the

eight singers if I was the organiser, asmiling Susheela said.

By 6 p.m. when the contest was com-ing to a close, the cafeteria was packed

with associates coming out to cheertheir favourite singer. Raghuraman Ra-machandran was also among thecrowds favourite when he crooned thesong Namma Ooru Singaari.

Tapping talentsRajiv Venkatraman, a native of Coim-

batore, has no formal training in classi-cal music but loves music.

I was an active member of my schoolband. This is the first time I am singingin an event, says Rajiv, who is morethrilled that P. Susheela judged the

competition. His favourite singers areS.P. Balasubramaniam and K.S. Chitra.

My dream is to become a playbacksinger and when madam herself askedme to pursue my passion, I was on topof the world, said an excited Geitha

who hopes to juggle her passion andcareer.

Though Geitha has learnt classicalmusic for three years, she says that it

was her uncle, a saint, who taught herbhajans since childhood.

And finally when P. Susheela sang afew lines from old classic numbers, Un-nai Ondru kaetpaen and Love birds,Love birds, the crowd got busy record-ing them on their mobiles. A rockingstart to Voice of Virtusa!

One of the recent achieve-ments of Blue Blood is arranging

we made a trip to the village lastyear.

We met the 55 students at aplace called Karumathur, wherethey assembled with their par-ents. Most of the girls hailed fromlow-income families and theirprimary need was access to edu-cation and study material. We de-cided to provide Blue Bloodscholarships for the students. Ournext big task was to find sponsors

And they madeit possible through Radium, acommunity on Orkut.

The core members of BlueBlood Arivan, Anitha, Senthil,Dhinesh and Rajarajan say thatRadium helped them get moremembers for the social work theywere doing.

    Arivan, whos pursuing his M.S.

The otherwise-quiet Cisons Complexon Montieth Road, Egmore, is hometo one of the most popular footweardestinations among college students

    and youngsters. Relying completely on

word-of-mouth, New Bollywood Shoes hasseen a steady growth in popularity sincethe time it started 10 years ago.

Ballet flats, colourful flip-flops, heeledsandals and pumps, all-weather wear andslip-ons, to describe in a clich, sell like hotcakes. Denim flip-flops are a new additionon the list.

While mens footwear sells briskly, too, itis women who form 75 per cent of the cli-entele, says Riyaz Ahmed of New Bolly-

wood Shoes. Students from colleges like WCC and Ethiraj are our most loyal cus-tomers, he says.

Besides the sheer variety of the stock,

drop-dead prices (starting from Rs. 100) areone big reason behind the stores popular-

ity. And, surprisingly, unlike the use-and-throw varieties that you get in pavementstalls at the same prices, a pair from herecould last you a reasonably long time. Du-rability is our biggest USP, says Ahmed. So even if you see some varieties here that

you might also find in Bangalore, what youget here will last much longer, he adds.Commercial Street, anyone?

While most of the shoes are made inChennai, the rest come from Mumbai(hence, New Bollywood Shoes), while somecarry the Made in Thailand tag.

Ergo pickCheck out the Roman sandals with black

or metallic strings. A pair comes at Rs. 150and will last you till you arent bored of it.

There is some very entertain-ing stuff that rises to the top,WooMe chief executive StephenStokols told AFP.

You get some people playingpranks on each other, smokingweed.... It truly is kind of a rawreality TV. This is taking it and

locking it in 60-second soundbites on the Internet. WooMe and rival websites are

with men and women dartingfrom table to table to chat in rap-id-fire succession at a time keep-ers signal.

Automated timers at WooMecut off online video chats after aslittle as 60 seconds or as long asthree minutes. Those that felt ro-mance kindling during the briefexchanges can later reconnect tofan the flames.

WooMe members can save dig-ital video of their encounters forreview, and are prompted bypop-up boxes to indicate whetherthe website has permission tomake copies public.

If both sides of exchanges givepermission, video of the brief on-line dates become fodder for

WooMe TV. A peek at WooMe TV revealed

that snippets voted favorites byusers include a woman whopainted lips around her belly but-ton and spoke to a suitor ven-triloquist-style by squeezing hertummy in a close-up camerashot. Stokols said the companyaims to minimise the number ofpotentially offensive scenes.

Spin is the key to successFormer off-spinner Ashley Mallett hascautioned Australia against relying too muchon their pace attack when they take onIndia, saying the novice spin duo of Bryce

McGain and Jason Krejzawill have an importantrole to play in the four-Test series. With a lineup that boastsof Brett Lee, Stuart Clarkand Mitchell Johnson,Australia would betempted to rely massivelyon pace to take bulk ofthe wickets but Mallett

Ghosal inches towards main drawSaurav Ghosal is just one win away from making the main drawUSD 62,000 Internationaux de France tournament after he battto a five-game win in the qualifying opener. The reigning natiochampion staved off a stiff challenge from South African numbone and world number 55 Jesse Engelbrecht 11-8, 7-11, 9-11, 1111-9 in a 68-minute battle.

    The rebel Indian Cricket

League (ICL) moved onestep closer to gaining recog-nition from the world body

after the Sri Lankan CricketBoard, led by former skipper Ar-

juna Ranatunga, allowed ICLplayers to participate in the SriLankan domestic league.

Arjuna (Ranatunga) has takena great step and I hope others canalso show the same honesty andcourage. When everybody in the

world body is going down ontheir knees to accommodate afew people, he has shown the wayto deal with it. I just hope that theInternational Cricket Council al-so has a few people like him whocan take tough decisions, Kiran

More, one of the key members ofthe ICL board, said.I feel people were waiting for

somebody to take the right stepand now others will follow suit. Its not a crime to play for ICL. Iam sure a majority of cricket fans,

who care for the game, agree thatthis is the right step forward andnobody can hold the game toransom.

The SLC had last year bannedits five ICL players Marvan Ata-pattu, Russel Arnold, Upul Chan-dana, Avishka Gunawardena andSaman Jayantha from playingany official cricket matches. Ac-cording to the new diktat passedby the board, the five players will

be allowed to play for their re-spective clubs in the domesticleague but will not be eligible forselection to the national side.

ICL business head HimanshuMody also welcomed the moveand said: This is a step in theright direction. I hope this willpave the way for the five Sri Lan-kan players to represent theircountry in the near future.

In a veiled attack against theICC and the BCCI, Mody said: Idont know what is illegal aboutICL. We are trying to promotecricket and also giving a wideplatform to every aspiring crick-eter to perform against the topstars and also to earn a living. We

had first applied for recognitionin April. But till now nothing con-crete has come out. I feel the ICCis trying to delay the matter; theyhad last sent a letter asking why

we started the league and we hadreplied to it. But we have notheard from them since then. Weare working closely with a few ofthe top London lawyers and Ihope to find a solution within thenext two weeks. Otherwise, wehave to look at legal options. Wecannot let our players suffer.

    With top players like Shane

Bond and Inzamam-ul-Haq intheir fold, the ICL is expecting tobreak new barriers this season. Our season II starts from Octo-ber 10 and we have nine teamscompeting in 41 games acrossfour cities. We will be playing in

certainly with the coaching staff and probably with the individu-als, Chappell said. Chappell began his Indian coaching assign-ment in 2005 and in 2007 he ended his controversy riddentenure. He is currently working with the Rajasthan Cricket

Academy in Jaipur.Chappell said his assistance to the Australia team was a

part of his job at the Centre of Excellence. Its a role thatthe Centre of Excellence head does from time to time,Chappell said. Tim Nielsen obviously did it with theteam on various occasions when he was with the acade-my, so its no different to the past. Some people will

want to make it look different, but its not, he added.Australian will train in Jaipur for a week and then willhead to Hyderabad for their only official warm-upmatch leading to the series opener.

You are known for makingserious films. Why thissudden change?

(Laughs). It is a change, defi-nitely, and its something I want-ed to do for a while now. I lovemaking films and good films canbe from any genre. Yes, it mightseem a bit surprising for manythat I am making a comedy, but Idont find it surprising at all. Itsonly that I came across a goodscript that could be made into acomedy.

Does this film also have asocial message? Is it a

satirical comedy?Again, it all depends on the au-

dience. If they try and find out asocial message they might but Ididnt have any intentions. Com-edy has a wide range, from satireto caricature to slapstick. Mine is,to a great extent, a romantic com-edy. As a filmmaker I haventtried to give any social messagethough the film touches uponquite a few areas of the Indianrural society.

How did the idea of makinga comedy come up?

It all happened in front of myeyes. Long time ago, there was apeon in my office. He was illiter-ate, so much so that he couldnteven read, forget writing. It start-ed after he got married when heused to exchange letters with his

wife who lived in the village. Thisperson had to take the help of so-meone from office to write theletters as well as read them, whe-reas his wife knew how to readand write. And we always used toread him those letters some ofthem were quite intimate. That

would at times embarrass the pe-on and we used to smile. That is

    how the idea came up.

So does Welcome toSajjanpur touch uponilliteracy?

    Thats only thebackdrop.Other-

wise, its a hilarious film. You

wont stop laughing. The filmsprotagonist, Mahadev (Shreyas),is one of the few literate people inthe village of Sajjanpur, who

writes letters for others sitting bythe side of the post office.

That sounds interesting Yes, because theres the pro-

tagonists vested interest behindall this. Mahadev always wantedto become an author butcouldnt, so he writes letters forpeople. At times he also manip-ulates them to make the lettersmore interesting.

And what was the reasonbehind roping in young

actors like Amrita Rao andSheyas Talpade after working

with serious actors likeNaseerudin Shah, Om Puri,Kulbhushan Kharbanda,

    Smita Patil and Shabana

    Azmi? Youve answered it yourself

they are young. Theres no otherreason apart from this. But I mustacknowledge that both have donea great job. More importantly,

Amrita and Shreyas are ready tolearn and dont have any hang-ups.

How do you see the future ofcomedy films today? Initially,

when directors likePriyadarshan and DavidDhavan started makingcomedies, they were well-received but now most of the

films arent working.I think that as long as theres a

future for tragedy, there is a fu-ture for comedy, too. It all de-pends on how good a story is andhow smartly you tell it. I must saythey have done a brilliant job bychanging the taste of theaudience.

    Will you be making morecomedies?

Why not? I am already workingon another script.
