For the last 90 years, the Pothys

family has draped Tamil Nadusbest in finely woven fabric. Prior toestablishing a sprawling show-

room in the midst of Panagal Park, Pot-hys was present in Srivilliputtur andTirunelveli.

Having arrivedWe felt like we had truly arrived only

when we came to Chennai in 1999, saysRamesh Pothy, Managing Partner, Pot-hys. To us, the T.Nagar market modelis the most competitive as people worldover come here in search of a beautifulsilk saree. Pothys has attracted a targetaudience of its own, one that appre-ciates the innovation showcased in theirsilk saree collections. According to Ra-mesh, Samudrika and Vastrakala arethe two from that long list that havebeen most successful.

Pothyss success does not rest on themerit of their creations or pricing strate-gy alone; it comes from providing apleasurable shopping experience to the

customer. We ensure that our staff istrained in several areas including over-the-counter etiquette which keeps ourcustomers happy, says Ramesh. It alsohelps create a strong shopping address, one that the customer takes pride in.

Promoting PothysWhen we first advertised, commun-

icating the basics such as variety and

availability drew customers. Today, cre-ativity is what drives our advertising, says Ramesh. Pothys relies on electronicmedia and its television advertising has

won much praise. The approach is prag-matic, insists Ramesh, while mention-ing that the annual advertising spendshover at eight crores.

Next in lineMadurai is next on the list of places

that will have a Pothys store. Whenasked if future plans include movingoutside of the state, Ramesh says: If wedo move outside of Tamilnadu, we willuse a smaller format primarily becauseof real estate costs.

Ramesh strongly believes that the In-dian saree has not lost out on interestand the numbers support his claim.(Since the time of its entry in Chennai to2008, Pothys has achieved a growth tar-get of nearly 300 per cent.) We will nev-er run out of an occasion to wear asaree, he says.

Pothyss success demonstrates that the marketfor quality sarees is inexhaustible

Waif thin models are still the reigning queens

of runways despite sustained campaigns tostop young models from starving themselvesinto skinniness - and designers are to blame.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America(CFDA) recently held an event dubbed The Beauty ofHealth: How the Fashion Industry Can Make a Difference atMilk Studios as part of its awareness program.

According to Womens Wear Daily (WWD), a fashion-in-dustry trade journal sometimes called the bible of fashion, things are not really going the way as the CFDA is hoping.

In a recent fashion show, model Coco Rocha said: She wakes up in the morning, goes to the bathroom to take ashower, and runs by the full-length mirror because she cantbear to look at herself naked.

"She only weighs 104 pounds, but all she can think is, Ineed to be thinner. People in the industry have been nohelp, Rocha told WWDs Marc Karimzadeh.

They said, You need to lose more weight - the look thisyear is anorexia, and although we dont want you to be

Ten-man Turkey made the great-est of escapes to book their Euro2008 quarter-final berth as theycame from 2-0 down to stun the

Czech Republic 3-2 in Geneva andtake their place in the quarter-finals.

The Turks had looked dead andburied on 62 minutes as Czech wingerJaroslav Plasil scored his sides sec-

ond goal following a first-half headerfrom giant striker Jan Koller as the Eu-ro 2004 semi-finalists looked safe.

But three goals in the last 15 min-utes including two by captain NihatKahveci in the 87th and 89th minutes put Turkey in the quarter-finals.

No penalty shootoutThere was no need for the antici-

pated historic penalty shoot-out afterTurkeys late showing when Arda Tu-ran hit a superb strike past Petr Cechto give his side hope with 15 minutesleft.

Then Kahveci struck twice thefirst coming from an unbelievablehowler by the normally sound Cech to put his side into the last eight and

set up a quarter-final clash againstGroup B winners Croatia in Vienna onFriday.

There was intense drama in the dy-ing stages when Turkey goalkeeper

Volkan Demirel was show a red card, but the Turks were not to be denied toleave the Czechs heart-broken.

A penalty shoot-out had been apre-match option as both teams hadcome the Stade de Geneve with iden-tical Group A records from their twoprevious games.

After sustained Czech pressure, thedecision to play Jan Koller paid off on34 minutes when he scored his 55thgoal in his 90th, and what was to turnout to be his last appearance, for hiscountry.

As the rain poured down at the startof the second-half, so Turkey steppedup their attack with Kahveci twice go-ing close, but Cech was solid in theCzech goal.

The Czechs looked to have sealedthe match when they took a 2-0 leadas Plasil hit a bullet strike, using the

wet turf brilliantly to slide onto LiborSionkos cross on 62 minutes whichgave Demirel no chance.

But Turkey showed fighting spiritand deserved to pull a goal back afterlaying siege to the Czech goal as win-ger Halil Altintop slid in a cross andTuran rifled his shot home.
