Everyday when S. Sudhakarleaves his sprawling ofcepremises, the tech lead witha software rm makes sure

he calls home or gets the menucard from his wife on the thingshe needs to shop. The stores in-side the IT Park where he worksare a bit expensive and do notstock many things, but it saveshim the trouble of nding park-ing space elsewhere and get theessentials after a busy day atwork. Convenience is how he

    best denes his workplace expe-rience.

Welcome to the world of orga-nised retail in IT Parks, wheremore amenities are being addedto make life of employees easier. From the basic food court and a

good number of ATM kiosks in-troduced at the start of a businesspark, today real estate promoters

are evolving by adding more val-ue-added features. When Khivraj Tech Park, pro-

moters of Olympia Technology Park, opened their premises atGuindy, they had only plannedspace for a food court, gym andsome ATMs.

Things, however, changed a year later on the campus, whichnow houses around 13,000 em-ployees. Retail was brought inslowly.

Today, from its busy telecomand convenience stores to anOdyssey outlet (its latest addi-tion), the otherwise-busy busi-ness park has created a lot of excitement among professionals.

Ascendas International TechPark, on the other hand, has tak-

en the cake for bringing KFC andMcDonalds (both introduced forthe rst time in the city). Thereseems to be no stopping.

Besides a host of retail stores,24 Seven Express Mart a walk-in-store open round-the-clock selling all basic essentials wasopened less than a month ago.

Today, stemming from thehigh-level of security that keepsassociates cocooned inside their

campuses, it has almost becomeessential to add many such

    amenities to keep employees go-ing.

Take for example, Bangaloreheadquartered real estate devel-oper RMZ Corp, which has beenpromoting the concept of TheBay in each of its properties inBangalore, Kolkata, and now atPerungudi (called Bay at Mille-nia). Spread across a self-con-tained unit of 30,756 sq ft for thefood court and 15,939 sq ft for

concourse, these zones are tailor-made for employees to relax, un-

wind and get back to work. What also makes our Ba

unique is the pricing they armore economical that an outletoutside the IT Park, says SonaLalvani, head (marketing ancorporate communications) RMZCorp.

    Does retail click?

So, how viable is it for a reestate developer to keep on add-

ing amenities? Amenities provided dont necessarily pay fancy return for an investor/pro-moter, says Ajit Chordia, MD oKhivraj Tech Park. Citing the example of Tidel Park, AscendaTech Park and Olympia Technology Park, he says, The return 30 per cent less than a normal of-ce.

The only way a promoter addvalue to the place is by creatinan excitement, which has to go with the lifestyle of the peop working on the campus. Chennai, if one has 2,000 sq ft oland, one can call it an IT Park And, for a space of 5,000 sq ft anmore with a strength of 5,00people, it is feasible to add morvalue-added features.

As a far cry from the days of a few ATM kiosks, IT Parks are now studded with ne dining restaurants, recreational zones, gyms and salonsLIFFY [email protected]

    All things bright and beautiful

Battle of the ageBible vs Science

T wo hundred years after tbirth of British naturalist Charles Darwin, the debate betweenscientists and the religious righover the origins of man remainas heated as ever in the UnitedStates. The controversy has evengained momentum in the UnitedStates in recent decades as creationists, who believe that Godcreated man in His own imagehave fought against only teachingevolution in the nations classrooms.

Last month, the Texas education board adopted a resolutionnarrowly voting to drop references in the curriculum requiringteachers to discuss the strengths

and weaknesses of scientic theories. The move, which makes it har

der to teach creationism in thestates schools, was hailed by thscientic community, although anal vote after public consultation is not due until late March.

There are no weaknesses oevolution, Eugenie Scott, director of the California-based National Center for SciencEducation, told ScienticAmerican.com.

Thats not to say we undestand everything that happenedin evolution or the mechanismsthat caused evolutionary change. But arguments about the detailsarent arguments about whetherevolution took place. The creationists make that categoryerror.

Texas is just the latest battleground in the conict. In 2005the Kansas education board vot-ed to allow the teaching in stateschools of intelligent design that all life including man is a divine creation alongside evolution.

But the rise of the neo-creationist movement has scientistson their guard. The American Academy of Sciences has evelaunched a website defendingevolutionary arguments whichsay man descended over millionsof years from the apes.

Greene swaps spikes fordancing shoesMaurice Greenes powerful legs still keep him in thespotlight but his ballroom dancing shoes, notsprinters spikes, pay the bills these days. The formerOlympic and world champion has been travelling bybus across America for the past two monthsentertaining audiences as part of the touringcompany of the popular television show DancingWith The Stars. This is a lot more fun, Greene said during a recentstop in Raleigh. When I was competing that wasstressful. This is going out and having fun. The34-year-old American retired from athletics beforethe 2008 season, citing a calf injury, but he was notready to put away his showmanship. An agentarranged for the sprinter to team up withprofessional dancer Cheryl Burke on the televisionshow and after a fth-place nish they joined the37-city tour. Hes very good, hes disciplined and anathlete, Burke said. I thought I was okay (as adancer), Greene said, but ballroom dancing iscompletely different than dancing in the clubs. The runners-up nish in thePunjab Gold Cup has liftedthe morale of the Indianhockey team which will now chase the number six spot fromthe current 11th in the worldrankings by the end of this year, coach in-charge Harendra Singhsaid on Tuesday. After we failedto qualify for the Olympics, theteam was low on condence andmorale. Now, after their perfor-mance in the Argentina Test se-ries and the Punjab Cup, thecondence level is back and you will see results in upcoming tour-naments as well, Harendra said.

Next challengeHe said the team was eyeing

the Champions Challenge in Ar-gentina in December which would take them to the numbersix spot. After that, breaking into

top four would be the next target.I have set realistic targets for my team. It all falls within the planfor the 2010 World Cup, its a stepby step process. Now, if somebo-dy expects us to be world cham-pions overnight, I think that would be too much to ask, hesaid.

Lot of positivesHarendra said though India

lost 1-2 to European ChampionsHolland in the Punjab Gold Cupon Monday night, the result hasnot been a disappointment at all.By not playing on our own soil, Ithink we have damaged to ourhockey. People too dont get tosee their players in action back home and the support which thenational game needs from thecrowds is not there, Harendrasaid. We need more events like

the Punjab Cup, which was state government organisedevent, for which former captainand organising secretary of thtournament, Pargat Singh de-serves a lot of credit. Such tournaments and even Test series with different nations should bheld in other parts of the countryas well for revival of hockey, hsuggested.

Our hockey needs a collectiveffort by all to bring back its olglory. I dont think one personlike me or for that matter any oth-er individual alone can restorethe sports lost glory, he addedHarendra said India would beleaving for Australia on Februar11 for a two-match series folowed by another four-match se-ries in New Zealand froFebruary 19.
