Rebelz, a theatre groupstarted by IT professionals

of the city, have drawn from theirpersonal experiences in pursuitof love for their new stage pro-duction The Battle of the Sexesthat debuts at the Alliance Fran-caise this Sunday.

As Ergo caught up with the

group at their rehearsal at VidyaSagar school in Kotturpuram lastweekend, the 15-member teamwere busy running some final

checks on their props. Since theteam is small, most of its mem-bers have multiple roles to per-form. So the writers double up asactors and even handle some bitsof production work.

The play is an unabashed takeof youngsters finding love.None of us are married yet, Pra-deep, the publicity manager ofthe group, says. And since weare in the process of finding ourlife partner, we thought it wouldbe a good idea to stage a play onthe subject. We are confident thatall youngsters will be able toidentify with the themes.

Battle of the Sexes is be a col-lection of three stories - The IdealMan, Maiden Venture and Brideand Prejudice. Each of it exploresthe clash of perspectives, opi-nions and actions between menand women on relationships. Thecore team of Rebelz Vinodh,Harish, Bharath, Pradeep, Vipinand Parthsarathy came up withthe script. The group says itsmain target is to get the young ITcrowd to come and watch their

plays. They hope to achieve itthrough original plays ground-ed in realities than go for adap-tations. Their motivation behindsticking together through all theirheavy duty working schedules, onsite trips and deadlines, is to dosomething different and have anidentity of their own. That is whythey call themselves Rebelz.

The Battle of the Sexes will de-but on December 21, 2008 (Sun-day) at Top Storey, AllianceFrancaise, Nungambakkam .Thetimings for the shows are 2.30PM, 5.00 PM and 7.30 PM. Thetickets are available at Fruitshopon Greams Road and Gangotree.

Researchers have developed anew form of psychotherapythat is effective in most cases ofeating disorders in adults.

Eating disorders are serious men-tal health problems and can be verydistressing for both patients and theirfamilies, said Christopher Fairburn, professor and principal research fel-

low at the University of Oxford. Now for the first time, we have a

single treatment which can be effec-tive in treating the majority of cases

without the need for patients to beadmitted to hospital, added Fair-burn, who led the study.

These disorders are a major causeof physical and psycho-social impair-ment in young women, affecting atleast one in 20 between the ages of 18and 30. Eating disorders are less com-mon in young men.

Three eating disorders are recog-nised: anorexia nervosa, (hunger sig-nals are ignored to control the desireto eat), accounting for 10 percent cas-es in adults; bulimia nervosa, (repeat-ed binge eating) which accounts for a

third of all cases; and the remainderare classed as atypical eating disor-ders, which account for over half ofall cases.

In these atypical cases, the features

of anorexia nervosa and bulimia vosa are combined in a different waccording to an Oxford release.

These disorders vary in their seity, but typically involve extremerelentless dieting, self-induced viting or laxative misuse, binge eadriven exercising and in some cmarked weight loss.

    Common associated featuresdepression, social withdrawal,

fectionism and low self-esteem. disorders tend to run a chrcourse and are notoriously difficutreat. Relapse is common.

Three eating disordersare recognised:anorexia nervosa,(hunger signals areignored to control thedesire to eat), bulimia

nervosa, (repeatedbinge eating) and theremainder are classedas atypical eatingdisorders

Batting great Sachin Tendulkar hitan unbeaten 103 as Indiaachieved the fourth-highest runchase in history to stun England

by six wickets in the first Test in Chen-nai on Monday. The hosts surpassedthe seemingly improbable victory tar-get of 387 on a wearing wicket with20.3 overs to spare on the fifth and finalday to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match

series.Tendulkar, 35, swept off-spinnerGraeme Swann to fine-leg for the win-ning boundary that also brought up his41st Test century amid loud cheers from30,000 home fans at the M.A. Chidam-baram stadium. Left-hander YuvrajSingh chipped in with 85 not out in afifth-wicket stand of 163 with Tendul-kar to dash Englands hopes after KevinPietersens men dominated a majorpart of the match with both bat andball.

The first Test match in India since lastmonths terror attacks in Mumbai pro-vided a thrilling finale with all four re-sults victory for either side, a draw ora tie possible going into the final ses-sion. India required 83 runs from 40

overs and England needed six wicketsin the last two hours of play, but Ten-dulkar and Yuvraj survived the secondnew ball to fashion a remarkable win.Tendulkar, showing the form that hasmade him the all-time leading scorer inboth Tests and one-day cricket, an-chored Indias chase for five hours inwhich he hit nine boundaries. Yuvraj, recalled to the Test side following theretirement of former captain SouravGanguly, made up for his first inningsscore of 14 by coming good when histeam needed it most. The top three run

chases in history are the 418-7 by theWest Indies against Australia in 2003,406-4 by India against the West Indiesin 1976 and 404-3 by Australia againstEngland in 1948. Indias victory was setup the previous day by flamboyantopener Virender Sehwag, whosmashed 83 off 68 balls with 11 foursand four sixes to leave the hosts 131-1at the close. When play resumed on

Monday, India suffered a blow in thethird over when Andrew Flintoff hadthe struggling Rahul Dravid caught be-hind by wicket-keeper Matt Prior forfour. Dravid, a veteran of 130 Tests atan average of 52.12, may find the selec-tors lose patience with him after ma-naging just 32 runs in his past fourTests.

0Gautam Gambhir, who shared a cen-tury stand with Sehwag, put on 42 forthe third wicket with Tendulkar as theIndians attempted to overcome theearly loss of Dravid. The left-handermoved to 66, his eighth Test half-centu-ry, when he flirted with a wide ballfrom James Anderson and gave PaulCollingwood a low catch at gully. Ven-katsai Laxman made 26 in a fourth-

wicket stand of 41 with Tendulkarwhen he dabbed at a ball from off-spin-ner Swann to Ian Bell at short-leg soonafter lunch. The second Test starts inthe northern town of Mohali on Friday.

Brief scoresEngland 316 (Strauss 123, Prior 53 not

    out, Cook 52) and 311 (Strauss 108, Col-lingwood 108, Z Khan 3/40) lose by fourwickets to India 241 (Dhoni 53, Flintoff3/49) and 387/4 (Tendulkar 103 not out,Yuvraj 85 not out, Sehwag 83, Gambhir66).

For actor Zayed Khan, who is trained in scubadiving, shooting underwater scenes for hisforthcoming venture Blue was no big deal. But he faced a real challenge when he had to

swim around sharks in the thriller.Just the idea of swimming around with these

unpredictable beasts (sharks) was difficult. We al-ways had our trainers and divers around, saysZayed.Blue, a big-budget underwater action adventure

shot extensively in the Bahamas and Thailand, isAnthony DSouzas directorial debut. Being madeat a whopping Rs. 1.29 billion budget, the film alsostars Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta andKatrina Kaif.Blue is said to be the first Indian film to have

been extensively shot underwater with a screentime of 20-25 minutes and with real sharks, al-most 40 in number.

For Zayed, shooting these action se-quences was a real adventure.

When you train as a student, you go till a maximum of 35-40feet. But when we trained forthe film, we had to dive downto 85-90 feet deep enoughto get actual shots of weedand sunken ships. It wasscary, recalls Zayed.

But the director used ad-equate safety measureswhile filming the riskyshots, he adds.

We were always sur-rounded with safety diversand all of them used to be at adistance of not more than 10metres while the shot was be-

ing taken. There were 20 otherdivers around doing someth-

ing or the other, so we were secured.Trainers instructed us not to keep long hair and

not to colour them blonde as sharks get attractedto white. Then they told us that we shouldnt haveany cuts on our body and if at all we had any, weshould bandage it well. So when we went down, itwas always with a lot of baggage in our head,Zayed says.

For Zayed, the real heroes were the stuntmen, who accompanied the actors under water and en-sured that the shooting goes on smoothly.

The stuntmen made it look so easy. They have away of dealing with fear. There were times whenthey first made me touch the sharks and slowly gotme to do the fight sequences. But it was all donevery carefully.

Zayed also recollects how stuntmen used to so-metimes ask him about his favourite song and heused to hear them through an apparatus fixed inhis ear under the water.

Once I told them I wanted to listen to Eminemsongs. In seconds, I could hear it and I believe all thestuntmen and divers could hear it on their appara-tus too because they started dancing. It was such asurreal scene. I thought I was walking on themoon, he says.
