Governor Knowles State Forest Equestrian Campground CAMPING dnr.wi.gov (search keyword “state forest”) Stay the night or a few days in this tranquil equestrian playground With more than 40 miles of maintained, well-marked horse trails winding through breathtaking upland terrain and mulple forest types, Governor Knowles is your Northwoods desnaon for equestrian riding and camping. Trade River Equestrian Campground offers 40 campsites with picnic tables, fire rings and horse e lines. Electrical hookups are available for an addional fee at some sites, and firewood is available for purchase. Vault toilets and water are located throughout the campground. On-site self-registraon and advanced reservaon through Reserve America are available for campers. The campground and trails are open year-round, but roads are not plowed during the winter months. Welcome! Campground and trail maps inside! Barrens Loop (brown signs) is the 21-mile main trail of the Trade River Equestrian Trail System. The trail takes the rider through forested and barrens habitat and is comprised of tote roads and fire lanes. The trail is rated easy with only one steep hill along the way. Sunrise Shortcut (green signs) divides the Barrens Loop in half for those who want a shorter ride (approximately 12 miles). Aſter leaving the Barrens Loop Trail, this 3-mile shortcut meanders through scrub oaks, pine forests and up into some hardwoods. Riders frequently view birds of prey soaring overhead. Wolf Creek Trail (red signs) is a 5-mile loop that travels east from the Barrens Loop toward Wolf Creek. The northern poron travels through a scenic forested area at different successional stages from old growth to young forest. The southern poron follows the St. Croix River Valley, home to a wide variety of wildlife including deer, ruffed grouse and many song birds. When The Trade River Day Use Area , just east of the equestrian campground, provides trail maps, water, restrooms, horse e lines and trail pass self-registraon on site. Another parking area with maps is available along the northern poron of the horse trail located at 340th Street and 290th Avenue. A Wisconsin State Trail Pass is required for riders 16 years and older. Trail Passes can be obtained through self-registraon at the trailhead or at a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Service Center. riders reach Wolf Creek they may at their own risk choose to tread the shallow rippling river, or cross the wooden bridge – somemes using it as a sounding board to compete with friends to determine whose horse has the purest gait. Riders frequently take this trail to Wolf Creek Tavern to enjoy a cold drink, burger or Friday night fish fry! Riverview Trail (black signs) is the most popular and difficult trail on the state forest. The 3-mile segment begins at the Trade River Campground and runs south along a ridgetop overlooking the Trade River Valley. This very sandy path goes up steep embankments that can be quite eroded. Riders should give horses plenty of room when going up or down the trail and take their me. The overlook on this trail features a breathtaking view and is a popular place for photos and lunch. Harris Loop (yellow signs) is a quick 2-mile loop trail located at the southwest corner of the Barrens Loop. This trail winds through stands of oak, jack pine and white pine.

• Only onewheeledcampingunitisallowedpersite.Thereisnolimitonthenumberoftents,providedtheyfitwithintheperimeterofthecampsite.

• All campers must obtain a camping permit. • Maximumcampingdurationis14 days within

any 21-day period. • A non-family group may not exceed 6 persons.

A“family”islimitedtoparent(s)anddependentchildrenandnotmorethantwoguests.

• Campingpermitsarevalidfrom3p.m.ofthefirstdayto 3 p.m. of the last day.Check-outtimeis3p.m.

ateachsite,andforthehealthofyourfellowcampers,pleasedon’t burn trash.

• FirewoodisavailableforsaleattheTradeRiverEquestrianCampground.Toprotectourforest,firewoodmustbepurchasedwithin 10 miles of thecampground.DATCP-certifiedfirewoodorgathereddeadanddownwoodfromtheStateForestisalsopermitted.Forthehealthoftheforest, do not cut live trees or brush.

• Charcoalandgasgrillsareallowed.Carefullydisposeofusedcharcoal.

Sanitary Facilities• Tomaintainsafedrinkingwater,pleasedo not

wash dishes at the pump.• Asanitarydumpstationislocatednearthe

registrationbuildingattheTradeRiverEquestrianCampground.

• Safedrinkingwaterisprovided.• Pleasekeepthecampgroundclean.Dispose all

horse manure and hay in the horse manure pits.

Pets/Horses• Petsmust be on a leashnolongerthan8feet

whileincampgroundsandotherdesignatedareas. Pleasecleanupafteryourpets.

• Portablepensmaybeusedbutmustbesetupinthetielinearea.

• Pleasesecurehorsestotielinesratherthantrees.

Motor Vehicles• AllvehiclesintheTradeRiverEquestrian

CampgroundmusthaveaWisconsinStateParksandForestadmissionstickerorpaytherequireddailyusefee.

Noise• Atnotimemaythenoisefromyourcampsite

interferewiththeenjoymentofyourfellowcampers.Campersmayoperategeneratorsbetweenthehoursof7a.m.and8p.m.Permissiontooperategeneratorsmayberevokedifgeneratorsareexcessivelyloud.Pleaserespectyourfellowcampersandonlyusegeneratorswhennecessary.
