LIVING OUR FAITH

Thank you to the Lindenwood Area Senior Ministry for the coffee and donuts last week. If you're interested in learning more about the services and social events that they provide (or how to volunteer to help out), give us a call in the office. We love LASM and are thrilled to be their partners in ministry. Fall Festival raffle tickets are being mailed out soon. Please consider purchasing some – this is the fundraiser that brings in the most money for us each year. Year-End Budget update because our new financial year begins in July, we just finished up the annual budget cycle for 2017-18. We'll give you an in-depth look at the budget during Stewardship Sunday, but I thought I'd share with you some of the numbers now, because they are interesting!

• When the budget was created and approved by our finance council back in the spring of 2017, we estimated that we were going to spend $115,000 more than we received over the course of the year.

• The final numbers are in, and we only ended up spending $27,000 more than we received, and this includes a few unexpected expenses like repaving the parking lot and both the piano and the organ breaking. Without the one-time ex-penses we would have had a balanced budget.

• We cut some personnel expenses and other expenses to be responsible with your gifts, but we did not eliminate or defer any maintenance to the buildings or property.

• Most of the difference was made up by the endowment fund performing well, extraordinary giving through the offer-tory that exceeded expectations, and enthusiastic volunteers who made our fundraisers highly successful.

• We also have lots of new parishioners who have joined us in the past year who are already beginning to love Epipha-ny. It isn't a secret that our neighborhood has lost a lot of population over the past 15 years and demographics continue to be a challenge for us, but this year our number of registered families was fairly steady for the first time in a long time.

• This is because Epiphany, as you all know, is a wonderful, engaged, active community with a beautiful Sunday Mass, a thriving family ministry, and a highly engaged ministry for our seniors who continue to be the backbone of the parish.

• All of this goes to show why Epiphany is such a blessed, vibrant parish. You all are the best!

Fr. Michael

FROM THE DESK OF FR. MICHAEL

P ro-Life Matters Shingles Vaccine Changes: This was recently sent to the Respect Life Apostolate office via the USCCB Pro-Life Committee: “The only vaccines readily available in the United States for some contagious diseases (e.g., rubella and Hepatitis A) have been manufactured using fetal tissue from induced abortions. This creates a problem of conscience… As recommended by the Pontifical Academy for Life in 2005, a long-term solution lies in working to ensure that

future vaccines and other medicines are not based on cooperation with practices that demean human life. This applies to products based on abortion, as well as to projected therapies from destruction of human embryos for their stem cells. The FDA recently approved a new shingles vaccine that does not use aborted fetal cell lines, and has given it a preferen-tial recommendation over the only other available, and morally problematic, shingles vaccine on the market. A joint let-ter from our colleagues at the Catholic Medical Association (CMA) and the National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) pro-vides more detail and some helpful suggestions. It is our hope that, with some encouragement, the manufacturer of this new vaccine may consider creating other morally acceptable vaccines.” You can see the letter by accessing the link be-low: http://files.constantcontact.com/ec9baf35001/47ebdf80-5ddc-46e7-825f-70b007c82b3a.pdf You can also read the information in the letter on the Church bulletin boards.

Respect Life Convention: It isn't too early to start planning for the 42nd Respect Life Convention on Sunday October 28 at the St Charles Convention Center. Keynote Speaker will be Ryan Bomberger founder of TheRadianceFoundation.org. More information to follow.

Hope and Healing: “There is no grief like the grief that does not speak.” Henry Longfellow.—The grief over an abortion experience is often so deep that it seems to be silent. Women and men may bear this burden for years thinking that there is no hope of forgiveness or peace. Project Rachel/Project Joseph offers free, private, professional counseling for anyone who is suffering because of an abortion experience. Call Project Rachel/Project Joseph at 314-792-7565 to begin your journey of healing and reconciliation.

Latin America Apostolate Next weekend is the collection for the Latin America Apostolate! Please prayerfully consider supporting this collection, which strengthens our faith and community with our brothers and sisters in Bolivia through the work of our archdiocesan missionaries. Your support is bringing the Gospel and invaluable resources to people who might not otherwise have access to pastoral care or church programs. Our missionaries can only do what we make possible through our prayers and sacrifices. Please be generous in the collection for the Latin America Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis on Sunday, August 5,2018.

LIVING OUR FAITH Vacation Bible School Last week we had over 50 children attend VBS here at Epiphany. Thank you to everyone who helped make the week a success. We really appreciate all the help preparing and executing the week. Thank you for the donations everyone gave! Our service pro-ject for the week was to make care packs for the homeless. We made almost 200 bags thanks to the parishioners of Epiphany, VBS parents and the Epiphany Friends Forever Organization. Thank you so much!! All the kids took home care packs to give out. 75 bags were donated to St. Patrick's Center. The other 25-30 were donated to homeless on the streets of downtown. Thank you to all who helped make it such a wonderful faith-filled week for our kids!

Humanae Vitae: Wine and Wisdom Join us! Sip, nosh and mingle with others (singles, couples, religious) seeking to deepen their faith and understanding. The Catholic Church’s teaching about marriage, sexuality, life, and fertility is beautiful and rooted in natural order as God created. But in our world today, it is counter-cultural and often feels challenging and controversial. In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the release of the papal letter Humanae Vitae (Latin for “Of Human Life”), let’s have a real and candid conversation about living our Crea-tor’s natural plan for love and life. PARISH COMMUNITY NEWS, NOTES & EVENTS

Guide Book & Directory Advertising Opportunity

We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organiza-tions, committees, activities, functions and events plus a complete directory of all par-

ish members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to Epiphany, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Church Of-fice by August 13th at 10:00 am.

Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.

Update Membership Information Does Epiphany database have YOUR family member-ship record correct? Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory *if you haven’t already done so). It is time for us to up-date our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they al in-cluded in your membership record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed Epiphany about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. The parish office number is, 314-781-1199 or email Trish at [email protected].

The success of any fundraiser re-lies greatly on its volunteers. Such is the case with our Fall Festival (formerly Homecoming). For many years, we have been fortunate enough to have a large group of very dedicated workers for our Fall Festival. Unfortunately, for a vari-ety of reasons the number of vol-unteers in this group has started to decline. That’s where you come

in. While we would love to approach each and every one of you individually to ask for your help, time simply doesn’t allow this so we are sending out our plea through the bulletin. We desperately need and want your help! Besides helping out, this is a great way to get more involved with our parish. By volunteering to work Fall Festival, you will meet your fellow parishion-ers and get to know them better by working side-by-side. One of the positions we need to fill ASAP is that of the Set Up/Tear Down Chairperson. Duties for this posi-tion include: supervising the set up and tear down of the Fall Festival Booths which takes place from Wednes-day - Sunday (September 12-16) of Fall Festival. Hours on Wednesday & Thursday are from 6-10:00 pm; Friday from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm and after closing of the Fall Festival (11:00 pm for about an hour); Saturday after closing 11:00 pm for about an hour; Sunday from ap-proximately 9:00 am until noon. You will not be com-pleting this task alone! There will be many hands on board to help! What we need from you is to supervise and help to be sure the task of set up and tear down is completed. Should you decide you can help out with this position, we will give you a detailed list of tasks and we will also have a previous committee member available to answer any and all of your questions. Please contact Trish at the parish office to volunteer for this or any other position for Fall Festival. Sometime within the next few weeks we will have an online sign up sheet available. Please keep watch in our bulletin for the web address. Don’t use the internet? No prob-lem, simply call Trish at the parish office to volunteer, 314-781-1199. We are sure to have a job to fit you!

Fall Festival Volunteers

Needed

$10,000 Fall Festival Raffle Tickets

The largest part of Epiphany’s profit from Fall Festival (formerly Home-coming) comes from our $10,000 Raffle. Raffle chances are sold for $100 per ticket (with the option to include 10 names at $10 per spot for a tenth of the prize). We also have a second prize worth $2,000. We only sell a total of 300 chances so your odds are really good! Sometime within the next week, you will receive your Fall Festival ticket in the mail. Please consider taking a chance on winning $10,000 or $2,000 by purchasing a Fall Festival raffle tick-et. Can’t afford an entire ticket, purchase a portion and we will add your name with others to complete an entire ticket. Help us sell all 300 tickets by taking an extra ticket to work or to a family event and sell the $10 portions or maybe even an entire ticket! Proceeds from our Fall Festival help to keep our budget balanced for the year! Tickets can also be purchased online at: https://epiphanystl.weshareonline.org/FallFestivalformerlyHomecoming
