ABOUT THE VANDALSIdaho returns only one starter from its 15-16 season a year ago. The Vandals
lost six letterwinners including the school’s No. 2 assist leader and No. 3 shot blocker.Idaho has played in a pair of exhibitions in 2010-11, but will be playing their first count-ing contest of the season Saturday against Eastern Oregon. The Vandals knocked offfellow Cascade Collegiate Conference member, Northwest Christian, 81-35 in the firstexhibition game. Idaho then beat NAIA Div. 1 opponent, Lewis-Clark State, 70-59.
LAST TIME OUTThe Mountaineers improved to 4-0 after a pair of wins at the 12th Annual
Aramark Quinn Classic in La Grande. Eastern continued to roll with back-to-back easywins over Montana Tech and Walla Walla University. EOU beat Montana Tech, 86-66,on Nov. 5. Eastern Oregon threw 24 assists in the victory and made 10 of its 28 three-point attempts. The Mountaineers then knocked off WWU the following night, 88-45.Unselfish play once again fueled the Eastern attack EOU tallied 25 assists in the win.The Mountaineers shot 49 percent from the field and made 12 three-pointers. TheCollege of Idaho swept the Classic as well with a pair of victories over Walla Walla andMontana Tech.
QUINN CLASSIC DUOThe Mountaineers’ Jason Mumm and Thomas McCarthy were named to the
Quinn Classic All-Tournament Team. Mumm was named the Tournament MVP. Theywere joined by Montana Tech’s Dirk Anderson, Walla Walla University’s TristanGreenidge, and The College of Idaho’s Kelly McCarty. Mumm tallied 24 points and 20rebounds in the tournament and shot 11 of 19 from the field. McCarthy finished with atournament-high 38 points on 10 of 20 shooting from behind the perimeter.

MOSCOW, Idaho -- The University ofIdaho men's basketball team held offEastern Oregon University Saturdaynight in exhibition action, 82-77.
The Mountaineers trailed by 18 points inthe first half, and 19 twice early in thesecond half, before making an enormousrally on the NCAA Div. 1 opponent. MacHopson made all 12 of his free throwattempts and led Idaho with 16 points.The Vandals shot 23 of 26 from the char-ity stripe Saturday.
A pair of Hopson free throws at the 15:03mark in the second half gave Idaho a 57-38 lead, the team's largest of thegame, but EOU went 4-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw lineover the ensuing 3:24, while Idaho turned it over on six straight possessions,and the Mountaineers cut the Idaho lead to six at 57-51 with 11:39 left to play.
Idaho responded with a quick 12-4 run to extend its lead back to eight, butEOU didn't quit, and again whittled a Vandal lead down to six, this time with1:31 left on the clock and the score 75-69. The Mountaineers resorted to foul-ing and Idaho made seven of its final 10 attempts from the stripe to withstandthe charge.
Dan Stafford finished with a game-high 24 points to lead Eastern Oregon. Thesenior made 10 of his 17 shots from the field. Jordan Gregg scored 10 pointsand had a team-high six rebounds. Josh Landsverk added 10 points off of thebench.
Marvin Jefferson scored 14 points for Idaho and added a game-high 11rebounds. Kashif Watson and Kyle Barone had 11 and 10 points respectively.
Idaho outscored Eastern Oregon 23-7 from the free-throw line. The Vandalsdominated the paint by out-rebounding EOU 35-21, and outscoring theMountaineers 34-22 in points in the paint. Eastern countered by turning 17Idaho turnovers into 23 points, compared to just 12 Idaho points off 10Eastern Oregon turnovers.

BATTLING WITH THE BIG BOYSEastern Oregon University men’s basketball has had recent close calls withNCAA Div. 1 opponents. The Mountaineers have lost to their last threeNCAA Div. 1 opponents by a combined 19 points, an average margin of 6.3points. EOU fell at Eastern Washington University, 90-81, on Nov. 29, 2006.Eastern then fell at Idaho State University on Nov. 14, 2008, 75-70. TheMountaineers held their own with the University of Idaho last season beforefalling, 82-77. Idaho State needed a 13-4 run in the final three minutes tobeat Eastern Oregon, and the score was tied with 1:22 left in regulation.The last EOU victory over a NCAA Div. 1 team was in 1975 with an 86-64win over Eastern Washington University.
NOT A BAD STARTAfter its 4-0 start, the Mountaineers are undefeated and near the
top of the nation in some stat categories. Eastern’s 100 assists in fourgames leads NAIA Div. 2 in total assists. The 25 assists per game is sec-ond in the nation. EOU’s 105.5 points per game is second in NAIA Div. 2 aswell. The Mountaineers are second in total three-pointers made (51) andscoring margin (45.5). Eastern is sixth in the country in total rebound marginwith an average of 24.5 per game.
Thomas McCarthy leads the country with 21 made three-pointers.Cody Thurmond in fourth in NAIA Div. 2 with 26 assists. His 5.2assists/turnover margin is ninth in the nation.
ELEVEN HEAVENEastern has appeared in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25 for 11 straight polls. TheMountaineers begin the season at No. 18. EOU was in every poll during theregular season last year after starting with just 11 votes. The last timeEastern received no votes in a poll was on Jan. 12, 2009 on the fourth rat-ing of the 2008-09 season. The same year the Mountaineers had their bestfinish in school history in the national quarterfinals. EOU had its best pre-season ranking in the 2008-09 season when they started at No. 6. Easternclimbed to No. 3 in the national poll that season, the highest in school histo-ry. The Mountaineers finished at No. 10 in the final poll that year.
A TRUE HOME COURT ADVANTAGEThe EOU men have won 32 out of the last 33 regular season
games at home. Eastern has won 25 straight conference regular seasongames in Quinn Coliseum.
The Mountaineers have won 56 out of the last 61 games played inLa Grande. .MOUNTAINEERS LOVE FEBRUARYEastern Oregon has closed the sea-
son strong the past few seasons. TheMountaineers have gone 14-3 in the month ofFebruary the past two years.
Only Oregon Tech has done a betterjob finishing the regular season strong. TheHustlin’ Owls are 15-3 in February the pasttwo seasons. Warner Pacific is 12-5 andEvergreen is 12-5 over the same amount oftime.
EOU does post the best record of anyconference team over through January andFebruary the past two seasons and this sea-son. The Mountaineers are 41-8 over thosetwo months, while OIT is 40-8, EvergreenState is 33-17, and Warner Pacific is 34-16.
Eastern won the conference title out-right in 2007-08, and shared the league regu-lar season championship with Oregon Techlast season.
