NEWSLETTER #4 DECEMBER 2013 ENVER CREEK SECONDARY SCHOOL 14505 - 84 Avenue, Surrey, B.C. V3S 8X2 • Tel: (604)543-8149 • Fax: (604) 543-9762 School Website: www.envercreek.sd36.bc.ca PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Itʼs hard to believe that December is here! Itʼs always amazing just how fast the school year goes. The last three weeks leading up to the winter break are very busy and it is important for students to remain focused and working hard until Friday, December 20. Report Card #1 was issued to students on Friday, November 1. The first report card is always important, because it gives both students and parents accurate information on how students are progressing in their courses. Hopefully the news was good and your son or daughter is pleased with their results. For those students who are not, there is still plenty of time to do something about it before the final report card. On the First Report Card, First Class Honour Roll status (3.5 – 4.0 GPA) was achieved by 384 students and Honour Roll (3.0 – 3.49 GPS) was achieved by 329 students. There were also 126 of the First Class Honour Roll students who achieved a perfect 4.00 GPA! Congratulations to all these students. A list of the Honour Roll names can be found in this newsletter. Outstanding work habits are also being recognized. There were 484 students in grades 8 – 12 who had all “Gs” and are being recognized on the Principalʼs Super “G” list. We feel it is equally important to recognize and celebrate studentsʼ effort. The names of students on the Principalʼs Super “G” list can also be found in this newsletter. Congratulations to all these students as well. As we near the halfway point of the semester, it is important to outline one key difference to the end of this term. The last day of regular classes is Friday, January 24 th for all students. The following two school days, Monday, January 27 th and Tuesday, January 28 th are days where students have the opportunity to come back to the school to prove their understanding of the course curriculum. Teachers will be available in their classrooms looking to help students who were not successful during the regular term, and want to improve their standing in the course. This plan also allows for students to visit their teacher if they have questions. We had some very impressive events at Enver Creek Secondary since our last newsletter. The Remembrance Day assemblies were one of the very best I have ever seen. Congratulations and thank you to Ms. Twigg, Mr. McIntosh, Mr. Shaw, Mrs. Bennett, Mr. Brown, Ms. McRae and the choir, dance team and drama students who were integral in this very important assembly. Also, thank you to Max Y. for playing taps. The feedback from staff, students and guests was very positive. A TOC said it was one of the best he had seen in his years! Our Post-Secondary Day was a huge success with over 19 universities, colleges and trade schools sharing their knowledge about their institutions, while helping our students make thoughtful plans for after graduation. Thank you to Ms. Donnelly, Ms. van Dyk, Ms. Ruffo, and Ms. Coutts for organizing this event. The Parent Advisory Council continues to meet the third Monday of each month. The next meeting is on Monday, December 16 th at 7:00 p.m. in the library. Finally, as we move from the fall to the winter sport season, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the coaches and sponsors of extra-curricular sports and clubs who give hours of their free time. This gift of time helps to enhance the culture and climate of the school. Thank you. Mr. Tim Cross. MISSION STATEMENT At Enver Creek Secondary School we provide opportunities for success and excellence as we prepare students to become confident, thoughtful, and responsible members of the community. GOING ON VACATION? If your family is planning a vacation during the school year (6 days or more), come to the office and ask for an extended absence form. You will need to make an appointment with the principal to discuss your childʼs extended leave from school. Before You Plan Your Trip:

1. School District Policy states that schools may hold a studentʼs space in a classroom up to 25 consecutive school days. Students who are absent for more than 25 consecutive days risk losing their space if it is required for new students. The school may deregister your child if the space is required.

2. Your childʼs academic progress may be negatively affected by a lengthy absence. 3. Scheduling the trip to overlap with a school holiday (eg. Winter Break) would lessen the number of school

days your child will miss. 4. Upon return from your trip, support programs such as Learning Support, etc., may not be available, and

your child may have to wait for an available space to return to the program. 5. Upon your return, your child may need you to spend extra time each day with him/her to catch up. 6. The school will not provide ongoing homework for your child during their absence. The school will make

suggestions regarding your childʼs educational opportunities and activities during your absence.

GRAD PHOTOS Students can book appointments online at www.artonagroup.com They will need to create an account, and hopefully will be able to book an appointment time. Photos will occur between 3:00 p.m. and 9:20 p.m. November 28, 29, December 3, and 4th and between 8:30 a.m. and 9:20 p.m. on November 30 and December 1. All individual photos will be taken in the Mobile Studio (in the parking lot). Students going for Yearbook/Composite photos only do NOT need to pay the sit fee. Students who are late registrants, Grade 11s moving up 2nd semester, or others who may miss their appointment this week can book on January 8th between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. These “catch up” photos will be in the MultiPurpose Room.

Weather-related closures, class cancellations

& delayed openings In addition to educating children, schools are expected to provide safe, supervised environments. Any cancellation, closure or delayed school opening has a significant impact on tens of thousands of families. Most cannot arrange alternate childcare when classes are cancelled or schools are closed unexpectedly.

Consequently, schools will not routinely be closed due to snow or other weather conditions unless there is damage or other circumstances (e.g., power outage) at a particular school that makes it impossible to operate safely. No announcement will be made that schools are open; only cancellations, closures or delayed school openings will be announced.

• The district supports individual and family decisions regarding safety. Student and staff safety are a priority of the school district. Parents/guardians have primary responsibility for their children's safe travel to school and staff members also decide if local conditions may be unsafe. If, for any reason, there are personal concerns about the ability to travel safely to school, other arrangements should be made. It is understood some students travel to school on routes that may be challenging on a snow day. Therefore, no student will be penalized for lack of attendance because of such conditions. While schools are likely to be kept open, the decision to attend is the responsibility of each family. Parents can phone or email the school to notify staff that the student won't be attending. Weather-related student absences will be excused.

• Some schools may announce a delayed opening time. The delayed opening time will be announced on the district website and through the media. The delay would be to allow more time to address potential issues such as a power outage or staff access to the school.

• The district will do its best to communicate the status of schools beginning at about 6:30 a.m., when possible. Weather, power, road and safety conditions can change substantially within a few hours, therefore assessments and decisions are made early in the morning so the information is more reliable.

• Only closures or delayed school openings will be announced. No announcement will be made that schools are open as normal.

Busing Regular and special needs school bus schedules may face significant changes or cancellation as a result of weather conditions. Changes or cancellations will be reported on the district website and through news media

Announcement of closures or delayed openings In the event of class cancellations or delayed school openings, the Surrey School District will post information on its website at www.sd36.bc.ca and provide updates to the following radio stations.

• CKNW (980 AM)

• News 1130 (1130 AM)

• CBC Radio (690 AM)

• Red-FM (93.1 FM)

• Radio India (1600 AM)

• Radio Punjab (cable/satellite)

• Fairchild Radio (1470 AM)

• CHMB (AM 1320)

Class cancellation/delayed opening information may also be broadcast on some local TV station newscasts. Please do not call the radio stations, as staffs are very busy receiving updates and preparing newscasts.

Please do not call the schools and district offices. Calling schools and district offices is also impractical since staff members are generally not available to answer telephone calls far in advance of regular school opening time and phone lines typically become congested in any event.
