Project Manager and Engineer. City and County of Honolulu, SandIsland Wastewater Treatment Plant Ultraviolet Disinfection Facility,Effluent Pump Station, Headworks, and Primary Clarifiers,Honolulu, HI. The Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant is thelargest in the state, with a capacity of 90 million gallons per day servingthe cities of Honolulu and Waikiki, along with suburban and outlyingareas. The first contract of this project involved constructing a newultraviolet disinfection facility with four channels of ultraviolet lightdisinfection units and an effluent pump station with four new 50-million-gallon-per-day effluent pumps, along with ancillary systems and standbygenerators. Work included installing twin 96-inch-diameter, 300-foot-long concrete pipes preceding the ultraviolet treatment system. Thesecond contract for this project involved installing a new headworkscomplex and two new clarifiers, each constructed of poured-in-placedconcrete and housed with the latest process technology. Headworksfacility construction included a new influent receiving box, six newscreening channels, four new aerated grit chambers for sedimentremoval, and installation of biofilter trickling filters and catalytic carbonscrubbers for hydrogen sulfide gas reduction.
