What is a chemical bond? (3 pts)

• A force that holds 2 or more atoms together.

Page 18: Entry task Block #1 Nov 19 th -20 th Break out your periodic table and get your papers signed off.

Why do ions form? (2 pts)

• They lose or gain electrons to have a stable electron arrangement.

Page 19: Entry task Block #1 Nov 19 th -20 th Break out your periodic table and get your papers signed off.

What family of elements is relatively unreactive and why? (2 pts)

• Noble Gases are unreactive because they have a filled valence orbit.

Describe the formation of cation. (2 pts)

• Atoms lose their valence electrons becoming a positive charge.

Describe the formation of anion. (2 pts)

• Atoms gain electrons becoming a negative charge.

Explain the formation of the ionic compound composed of lithium and

oxygen. (4pts)

• 2 Lithium atoms loses their valence electron becoming +1 charge.

• Oxygen gains both of those electrons becoming a -2 charge.

• They fill create a stable orbital arrangement

• Cancel each other charges out.

Provide the 5 properties of an Ionic substance. (5 pts)

• High melting point• Dissolves in water• Conductive (after being dissolved in H2O)• Solids at room temperature• Brittle (not malleable)

What is lattice energy? (3pts)

• Energy needed to separate ions from its compound.

Page 25: Entry task Block #1 Nov 19 th -20 th Break out your periodic table and get your papers signed off.

Which compound would have more lattice energy- NaCl and AlCl3? Explain

your reasoning. (2 pts)

• AlCl3 would need more energy because it has 3 electrons being transferred which would need more energy to pull them apart.

What is the difference between a formula unit, and crystal lattice (3 pts)

• Formula Unit is the simplest form of an ionic compound- NaCl.

• Crystal Lattice is the repeating formula unit forming a lattice.

What is the difference between a monatomic ion and a polyatomic ion? (4 pts)

• Monatomic ion is a one atom ion.• Polyatomic ion is a 2 or more atoms that

are covalently bonded that carry a charge.
