From 24 to 29 March 2012, Webb’s will present sales of important paintings and contemporary art, 20th century design, fine and rare wines, Oceanic and African art, antiques and decorative arts, and classic motorcycles and cars of the day; looking further ahead, we will hold a harlequin sale of jewellery on 2 May 2012. Driven by a large and highly dedicated team of specialist staff and a comprehensive approach to marketing, Webb’s once again cemented its reputation as a leader in all areas of the market during 2011, achieving a greater number of sales by value than any other New Zealand auction house and

conducting a staggering 37% more transactions in excess of $100,000 than our nearest competitor. Arriving at the end of the financial year, our March suite of sales traditionally enjoys a warm reception from the market. While one might have expected uncertainty in the financial markets to curb investment, the current climate has, in fact, given rise to a more refined market, where condition, provenance and quality are carefully considered by an active base of collectors seeking to invest in cultural assets. With a strong selection of early consignments, we are now seeking further entries to Webb’s first sale of important paintings and contemporary art for 2012. Including a survey of contemporary painting, sculpture and photography, with works by Andrew McLeod, Fiona Pardington, Hye Rim Lee, Jude Rae, Ronnie van Hout, Peter Stichbury and Paul Dibble, alongside significant works by modernists such as Richard Killeen, Ralph Hotere, Philip Clairmont, Louise Henderson and Toss Woollaston, and historical works including a significant early portrait by Charles F. Goldie, this auction will present a fine selection of museum-quality works.

The auction market over 2011 was characterised by promising activity with a trend toward quality works in good order attracting the eyes of collectors. Numerous new record prices were set with results at Webb’s confirming a stable fine art market. This will be an auction focused on 20th-century innovation: the design and craftsmanship that shaped the modern world. The objects illustrate concepts of modernism propelled by new technology, changing lifestyles and designs that defined a new era. The focus is on premium mid-century modern design from the post-World War II era through to the 1970s. It highlights a selection of design, objects and interiors for changing lifestyles: these were creative statements that turned designers into legends. This comprehensive offering presents a predominantly international selection; objects from early 1950s’ utilitarian designers sit alongside organic Scandinavian and American design. It also includes rare antipodean design classics from New Zealand and Australia. The objects on offer will be vintage, with the historical patina and original wear remaining faithfully intact.

Jewellery consultant Christopher Devereaux will attend ‘Baselworld 2012’ in Switzerland, the world’s largest jewellery fair. Consequently, there will be no Webb’s sales of jewellery held in March or April; however, entries are now invited for a harlequin sale of jewellery to be held in May. Harlequin sales are held once a year and, as the name suggests, offer a wide variety of jewellery in every price range. The illustrated catalogues are provided free at viewings and the sales

have proved to be very popular. The last auction of this type, held in April 2011, produced a New Zealand record price for a solitaire diamond at auction, $228,750 (incl. premium) – a record that still stands. During Christopher’s absence, you are invited to leave items to be appraised under receipt at Webb’s. Jewellery sales at Webb’s are renowned for the wide selection of fine and magnificent jewels that are offered to the market, together with valuable watches and objects of virtu, in a regular

calendar of sales throughout the year. Significant diamonds, the finest antique and modern jewels, and watches from the most sought-after makers in the world are sourced for these sales, making them glittering events.
