Lions Club reminisces a year of activities at annual changeover dinnerTHE Lions Club of Tennant Creek held their annual Changeover Dinner at the Memorial Club on Satur-day night. President Kate Foran gave

a report of the activities of Lions over the last year and the impacts of COVID on those activities, however one of the biggest and most impactful of the activities would have to be the distri-bution of meal packs to the community in response to the destruction of the local IGA supermarket.Office Bearers for the com-

ing year were introduced with Kate remaining presi-dent for another year, ably supported by a committee that includes Peter Hogan, Merrin Thompson-Ashton, Kim Stewart, and Marlene Hicks. Tennant Creek can look

forward to another year of Lions being a vibrant and supportive part of our com-munity.

A ROARING PRIDE: Merrin Thompson Ashton, Kim Stewart, Lyndell Allen, Marlene Hicks, Ian Hicks, Ruth Preuss, Kate Foran, Ashley Leeson and Peter Hogan form the committee.

DINNER GUESTS: Graham Stinson and Jenny Kitching.

NIGHT OUT: Morgan Lehnert, Rianna Ashton, Pauline Reynolds and Ana Beranaliva.

SOCIAL dysfunction does not stem from the availability of alco-hol there are far deeper causes. Successive governments and pat-

ronising organisations have failed in their duty to the people they rep-resent they have nurtured a victim mentality and removed self-reliance and dignity from the lives of many

Territorians. They have created a culture of re-

sentment and a sense of entitlement that divides the community.Alcohol has become a panacea for

people who see no other purpose in their lives and young people who are conditioned by their environment vent their frustration by attacking the

community. Rather than demonising alcohol to

disguise the real issues it might be more productive for some commen-tators and relevant organisations to have a good hard look in the mirror to discover the reasons we are in this mess. – G.D. Egan, Tennant Creek.

COMING up this month is the perfect chance for the Barkly business community to take the lead for change for the region’s future.A Barkly Futures Forum is being held over two days

sectors identified in the Barkly: agribusiness, creative arts, social services, tourism, energy and mining and resources. There will be chances for participants to take part

in face-to-face discussions with industry experts plus networking opportunities and keynote speakers as part of panel events where business can ask questions to successful business leaders.Minister for Small Business Paul Kirby (pictured) said

business growth and attract industry investment in the Barkly region,” he said.“The Barkly Futures Forum will provide a great op-

portunity for businesses to come together and learn more about opportunities in the region, while gaining valuable insight from some of the Territory’s top busi-ness leaders.

Former BRADAAG CEO jailed for stealing

THE former CEO of the Barkly Region Alcohol and Drug Abuse Advisory Group (BRADAAG) has finally seen justice for stealing almost $250,000 from the non-for-profit rehab organi-sation.Sixty-year-old Stewart Naylor was sen-

tenced in Alice Springs Supreme Court on Tuesday to five years and three months prison and will be eligible for parole in two years and three months. It was revealed Mr Naylor was a drug ad-

dict and developed a gambling problem. His wife who was well known in the

Tennant Creek community as well has since passed.Justice Kelly acknowledged the loss of

Mr Naylor’s wife caused considerable grief and took into account he had stayed off the drugs since her passing.“You stole from your employer and steal-

ing from the public person is considered to be a particularly serious breach of trust, particularly when the money was being taken from an organisation like BRADAAG, where it was intended to benefit from the most vulnerable members of our community,” he said.“Your offending caused considerable

reputational damage to that worthwhile organisation.”Justice Kelly denied Mr Naylor’s letter of

remorse, stating he showed no hesitation to steal from his employer for years.

THE tender is out for the new Tennant Creek Youth Justice Facility. This is a milestone for Tennant

Creek residents who over the last 18 months have selected the facility’s location and co-designed the building. The Youth Justice Facility is one

of the 28 initiatives of the Barkly Regional Deal. It will be a therapeutic alterna-

tive to detention, with “no locks or bars.”, delivering programs to Barkly youth in contact with the justice system, while allowing them to stay closer to their families and

Country.Barkly Regional Deal initiatives

like the Youth Justice Facility are developed in collaboration with the community. The Youth Justice Facility working

group, facilitated by the Barkly Regional Deal’s Backbone Team, is chaired by residents and made up of community members, local organisations and government representatives. At the group’s regular meetings,

community members gave input to the Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communi-ties (the project’s lead agency) to

make sure the facility would meet the needs of the Barkly community.Through this working group pro-

cess, the original suggested site of the facility was changed to a new preferred site on Aboriginal-owned land, recognising the importance of young people being on Country during the rehabilitation process.Local Aboriginal organisations are

now co-designing the building with the Department.Last year, two key local Aborigi-

nal organisations on the working group, Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation and Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation, made a

joint submission advocating for changes to the design, including bringing a more home-like feel to the facility.Following the submission, the

working group agreed that an Abo-riginal-owned approach to design-ing the building was fundamental. Since then, Julalikari and Any-

inginyi, as well as Patta Aborigi-nal Corporation, the Native Title representative body for the site of the facility, are working together to make sure the design elements identified in the submission are included as the project progresses.“The working group was a mean-

ingful engagement process, wherein the broader community and relevant stakeholders worked together with government to bring about some very positive and visionary outcomes,” says Kevin Banbury, the Managing Legal Practitioner of the Tennant CreekNT Legal Aid office and Co-Chair

of the Youth Justice Facility work-ing group. The Barkly Regional Deal is the

first regional development deal in Australia. It brings a new place-based approach to regional de-velopment, which puts community voice at the table.

Tackling youth crime as a peaceful communityIN a true show of community spirit, a group of individ-uals banded together to make a difference and tackle youth crime at one of the most notoriously vandalised premises – the BP Complex. They attended the town’s only 24-hour store, the BP

Complex, in an attempt to engage with the town’s youth in a non-confrontational manner to minimise the harm being caused on the town’s business and residential sector and.It was the brainchild of the Women’s Action Group (WAG),

led by Linda Turner (known as LT).The CEO of the Tennant Creek IGA and BP Complex man-

agement group IRAM – John Kop – praised their efforts.

“We are delighted we are getting support from the Wom-en’s Action Group, and Julalikari and we thank them,” said Mr Kop.“For those nights they gave our hard working staff a new

lease of life and they feel very supported.“In particular, our manager was on top of the moon.“How good is this group of volunteers who have taken

time out of their own busy lives to help a problem effecting the community at large.“Well done and we thank you all.”Joining the group was Barkly MLA Steve Edgington and

wife Nicci.

Mr Edgington said the project was a huge success.“We spoke to some of the kids and they were pretty well

behaved,” he said.“Some of the kids were the volunteers’ families and they

were encouraged to go home and others were encouraged to behave responsibly.“It was a coming and going of volunteers throughout the

night and morning – but all up there were about 25 people who were eager to help out our town and confront this issue in a meaningful and workable manner.”If you’re keen to help – just rock up to the BP tonight and

show your support and help our town – and our kids!

Barkly Plumbing ServicesFOR more than two decades, Barkly Plumbing has been to the rescue for clients around the issue whether it’s a small plumbing problem at the home or a major crisis at an indus-trial works.

Last year, Brian and Sarah Curran took over the reigns of the family business from Sarah’s parents John and Peta Henderson.

But the couple is no stranger to the plumbing industry – with Brian managing the business for many years prior to the pur-chase after the Hendersons made the decision to retire.

Barkly Plumbing is renowned for its quality workmanship in plumbing, drainage and gas in the residential, commercial and maintenance sectors across the Barkly.

With a team of 12 employ-ees, the company has headed contracts for a number of projects and subcontracted for commercial, civic and in-dustrial plumbing works.

“Being a family run business that is locally owned and op-erated, we are familiar with the vast range of services we need to offer, especially within our climate and distances,” said Brian.

“We take into consideration all aspects of our project including climatic, cultural, safety, environmental, travel and logistical conditions that

may have an impact on clients and projects, and can adapt to meet needs and outcomes.”

Brian said their team is expe-rienced across the full range of general plumbing, as well as offering specialised ser-vices in: waste water treat-ment, reverse osmosis units,

hydro-vac excavation, bulk waste removal, fabrication and welding, storage tank supply and installation.

Working towards better attendance at schools in the Barkly

If you need help to get your children to school please ring the office on (08) 8962 3270 for assistance or drop in and see the team.

The Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS) and Parent and Community Engagement (PaCE) teams have teams busy around the community schools and Tennant Creek over the past two weeks helping get the children to school.

All RSAS and PaCE workers have been engaging in getting as many children to attend every day.

Here in Tennant Creek at the Primary School, we have started the year off with an intro-duction and welcome to all the teachers (new and old) and a briefing of what our programs do and planning meetings to see what we can do better this year.

We look forward to working in partnership to increase attendance said RSAS Supervisor Joe Mayers.

The RSAS and PaCE team’s manager has been and will be engaging with the Local Authority Community Groups across the Barkly Region with the aid of Barkly Regional Council each month to provide updates and planning of events regarding school attendance.

We welcome the support and partnership of these local groups. School is important to our leader of tomorrow. So, send your children to school every day.
