    INTRODUCTION

    1.1 Background of the Study

The world is in the fast phase of rapid changing

environment. As it improved, the human and modern

technology also amplified. The call for the needs of

human race arises up to the point that new discoveries

reveal month to month. Internet and social media sites

are the most famous discoveries in the modern time it

helps lesser the work of people that by the touch of

their hand, they can make things possible. As the

internet is penetrated the schools for the connection in

building foundations of education for the quick learning

of the students it gave birth both to positive and

negative result especially among the students.

Many social sites implemented a month to month

update for the effect of the social media to the lives

of the users. Celebrities, government and public

officials, ordinary citizens down to student are shown

addicted in using social media as their means of their

superb self-esteem. Taking pictures for uploading to

public to attract more likes and followers had become

  • addiction and somehow entail for psychological

disorders. What will be the future waiting for our

students education? Does distraction are necessary at

all? That is a big deal particularly to student who

already embraced the social sites as part of their

everyday living. Yet it also gives to healthy learning

to students. Aside of popularity means, it awakens their

creativity and learning process had been easy as ABC.

But the question is, is the knowledge absorbing from the

social media sites still significant on their studies

and on their lives? Thats this study all about. Chapter

2 will argue and support the significance of the

    research.

    1.2 Significance of the Study

Social Media is alarming as death. The fast growing

psychological effects to the mind of the students is

like zombies eating students brains. This scenario

drives the researcher to study and investigate the

effect and solution for the negative side of using social

media sites. According to the respondent, it is their

capitalization in their studies, without it they would

leave behind from the discussion and from the

  • recognition from the class. The hardest decision had

been done for the part of this study for researchers

cannot halt a thing that is a big remedy to students

education. After a long period of argumentation and

collecting facts and effects, we finally settled to

continue the study for the lives of the student. Yes! We

are saving their lives despite that it was already a

remedy to them. Because the truth it was a toxic that

kills them psychologically, socially, physically and

mentally. We are trying to resolve the things that are

already too good to be true. Students must not rely on

social media sites alone to improve their knowledge,

rather a counter act between in the program world and in

the real world. We must live life easier but ought to

live it with self-fulfillment and completion. As a

student and future educator its nice leaving a legacy

that we achieve things because we utilize the support of

modern advancement and never use it to deceit our own

    understanding.

  • CHAPTER 2

    Body

    2.1 Nature of the problem

The social media is the largest contributor of all

knowledge acquired by every single individual. Its

influence strongly pursue at time to time existing of

humanity. Without media, we are all just stuck from the past

where know nil but the news alone thru our near barangays. As

the world evolve in this new discoveries; using facebook,

twitter, and instagram to communicate, send and receive

information, it also brings the devastation of corruption in

the time and mind of the student. The media brings the best

in this generation but as it continues, from the best were

born the worst itself. Either it is good or bad; it still

needs to pay attention for the better change in the lives of

    the student.

This chapter focuses on the actual statement of

observations, results and nature of related studies regarding

social media to students education. The collectible answer

from the research gathered by the students is well presented

through tables for better description of the answers of the

  • respondents. Analyzing the presentation thru the tables is

easy and readable. The pros and cons are crystal clear stated

to easily understand by the readers the statement trying to

figure out from the result. The highlight of the study is

chosen to represent the whole interview.

2.1.3 Negative side of Social Media

Students are having harder time getting communicate face

to face with people, and are losing their skills, due

that they are spending more time talking behind a screen

The attention to details, attention to pronunciation and

grammar, has declined drastically, due to that most of

the communication that happens online is not proper.

Our ability to retain information has decreased, and the

willingness to spend more time researching and looking

up good information has reduced, due the fact that we

got used to the ease of accessibility to information on

    social media.

Social Media had become a major distraction to students,

causing the overall performance of students to decline,

  • especially the ones who tend to check their Facebook and

    twitter while studying.

    False information and news.

Misuse of freedom of expression. Abusing of the user in

telling their opinions without thinking if they are

already hitting others below the belt.

2.1.4 Positive side of Social Media

Social media did make the world a smaller place, now we

have more information, more knowledge, and have better

    opportunities to use it.

Social media improved our ability to absorb information,

what would have seemed to be over whelming to someone 20

years ago is normal to us, we have an extreme ease in

processing and we are evolving quickly.

Social media helped students have a better direction of

what they want, now they have ease of reaching to mentors

in the same industry and people already working in their

dream company, and get a taste of what it is like, which

was quite impossible for students 10 years ago.

Students got closer to art and design, and are exposed

continuously to new ideas, and are given a big chance to

    feed their creativity.

  • Talents got discovered faster, students who were good at

programming got their name out their easily, student who

were good in music, got their videos out and shared

    leading them to their dreams.

The advent and dominance of social media has created a

new breed of marketing, which has required professionals

to build and further the field. As social media users

join the workforce, they bring their skills to their

careers. Social media prepares young workers to become

great marketers. It has become essential for major

businesses to include a social media marketing strategy

and students today are the people filling these

    positions.

While older generations might not completely understand

or agree with the amount of social media activity by

todays student population, they will quickly benefit

from it. As technology advances, so does the way the

world works with it. Members of the young workforce are

keeping up to speed with many forms of social media.

Once you get a proper social media marketing strategy

locked in, youll be grateful for the recent graduate

youve hired to carry out the details.

  • Social media is the fastest way to find lost friends or

relatives. Thru posting their pictures and asking your

network friends to share it, locating is much easy than

    reporting to police officials.

Now, have you found yourself whether in what side are

you in? If until now, confusion still lingers your mind

because its hard to say you are on the wrong track

because you feel that you belong to the popularity

brought by the social networking sites which increased

rapidly year to date. This is probably due to the reason

that college and university students as well as teens

used it extensively to get global access. These social

networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook have

become a raging craze for everyone nowadays.

    2.2 Discussion

Out from the result gathered, it implies that social

networking sites are very common to students. Different

points of views are pointing why they use those sites. First,

its the fastest way to communicate to far distance friends,

relatives and love ones. You dont have to bothered if what

is happening to them. Just by the touch of your finger, you

  • can access with them anywhere and everywhere. Any part of

globe is just reach by your hand through these facebook,

twitter, instagram and any other social media sites. On the

other hand using those sites makes the school load more easily

and burdened less; searching thru for the assignments,

research studies, projects and other school activity

requirement is in the power of one touch. Before, the

remarkable use of finger is marking official documents alone.

Now your finger is the explicit sample of multi-tasking. Its

one touch can navigate the globe. You can contaminate world

by posting and sharing blogs, news, entertainment and your

entire creativeness can equipped immediately. On the positive

side, the social media is relevant in the studies of

education; through it they are acquiring enough education.

But for the other concern, students became lazy they just

faking their learning because the truth is, student never

absorb education, rather they absorb forged education from

social media sites as they present it from class as their own

knowledge. Therefore social media also corrupts young minds

to whip. Stealing other knowledge rather than learning from

it. Students tolerate their selves to be indolent, relying

and trusting their education to those sites. In fact the world

just reached an accumulated 2 billion active social media

users worldwide; this means that the effect of social media

  • on our way of life and on our education is inevitable.

One of the major factors of our life that got affected is the

education, knowing that the majority of the social media users

globally, range from the age of 14-29 AKA school years more

    or less.

Social media is between in negative and positive side.

How can we distinguish if in what side are we in? Though we

all might assume that the effect is one sided, but it seems

that social media has done as much good as bad to our

educational structure. Today the picture of missing person

can post to facebook, and the netizen will just help through

sharing and sharing that picture, compare before that we just

only rely thru reporting to policemen and waiting to nothing.

Other positive issues of social media is that it also helps

those who need help, either student, ofws or ordinary

citizen who were battered or maltreated by other, rescuing

them and locating their places is been easy. Criminals also

make their space narrowed due to the world brought by social

    media.

The negative effects of these social networking sites are

not really seen than the positive ones because the effect is

not yet seen by the victims alone but reflects thru the

victims. Absolutely students will not admit to their selves

  • that social media harm their studies. But these sites have

caused some potential harm to society. The students become

victims of social networks more often than anyone else. This

is because of the reason that when they are studying or

searching their course material online, they get attracted to

these sites to kill the boredom in their study time, diverting

their attention from their work. And the most serious one is

the fighting caused by posting your pictures, commenting to

others, and hacking accounts. That issue cannot control by

anyone because the person who made can only control his

attitude and change for the good. They are trying to reach a

world beyond their control at the wrong time of practice.

Writing your thoughts is an ordinary behavior but sharing it

carelessly without caring if you can hurt others is no longer

a fun. You will be twit right away and your story will be

heard by millions, rumored scattered instantly due to social

media. Those misbehavior developed gap and breached good

relationship among people. Aside of that they developed a

psychological disorder. A student, the future hope of today

must not have the attitude of always depending for the

approval and comment by others, they become reliant and

fragile. It mean that their foundation as a civilize person

is obsolete. Normal people usually do what the normal person

does. But following others life is not anymore usual for a

  • person who has a correct thinking; either youre following a

celebrity or common people it is not still right and proper

to do it so. The following is the most serious effect of

social media that really matters to student:

    2.2.1 Social media is addictive.

Studies show that 63% of Americans log on to Facebook daily,

and 40% log on multiple times each day. People use the site

for myriad reasons; however, it usually serves, on some level,

the same basic purposes: distraction and boredom relief.

Likes and comments are positive reinforcement for posting

information, making it difficult for a person to stop.

Researchers have found this so common that they created a

scale to measure this addiction: The Berge Facebook Addiction

    Scale.

2.2.2 Social media makes us compare our lives with others.

Posts on social media many times present an idealized version

of whats happening, what something looks like, or how things

  • are going. This can lead users to constantly compare

themselves to others and think less of their own lives. If

things are going particularly well for people in your newsfeed

and youre having a rough day, of course this will likely

negatively affect your mood. In fact, in 2012 a team of

researchers in the UK surveyed users, 53% of whom said social

media had changed their behavior; 51% said it was negative

behavior because of decline in confidence they felt due to

    unfair comparisons to others.

2.2.3 Social media makes us restless.

Out of the same sample as the above example, two-thirds

admitted to having difficultly relaxing when unable to use

    their social media accounts.

2.2.4 Social media gives rise to cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying is an enormous concern, especially for

adolescents. An organization that aims for internet safety,

called enough is enough, conducted a survey that found 95% of

teenagers who use social media have witnessed cyberbullying,

and 33% have been victims themselves.

2.2.5 Social media glamorizes drug and alcohol use.

  • A study that explored the relationship between teenagers,

social media, and drug use found that 70% of teenagers ages

12 to 17 use social media, and that those who interact with

it on a daily basis are five times more likely to use tobacco,

three times more likely to use alcohol, and twice as likely

to use marijuana. In addition, 40% admitted they had been

exposed to pictures of people under the influence via social

media, suggesting correlation between the two factors.

Although a correlation is all it is, it makes sense that

social media would amp up the amount of peer pressure to which

    teenagers are exposed.

2.2.6 Social media can make us unhappy.

A study from the University of Michigan collected data about

Facebook users and how it correlated with their moods. Simply

put, they found that the more avid users were overall unhappy

than those who used the site less. Over more time, avid users

also reported lower satisfaction in their lives overall.

2.2.7 Social media can lead to fear of missing out

Fear of missing out is a phenomenon that occurs when you feel

pressure to be doing what everyone else is doing, attend every

event, and share every life experience. It can evoke anxiety

  • and cause social media users to question why everyone is

having fun without them. Surveys have even found that people

feel insecure after using Pinterest because they feel that

they arent crafty or creative enough. Facebook and Twitter

can make people feel like they arent successful or smart

    enough.

  • CHAPTER 3

    CONCLUSION

    3.1 Summarizing of Findings

The effects of social media to students education which

information basis for discussion was been collected by the

researchers is presenting the summary of findings of the

study. Although the social media is widely approachable and

helpful to all level but the study resulted that there is

effect that is not really acceptable and must not tolerate:

    1. Social media is addictive.

    2. Social media makes us compare our lives with others.

    3. Social media makes us restless.

    4. Social media gives rise to cyberbullying.

    5. Social media glamorizes drug and alcohol use.

    6. Social media can make us unhappy.

    7. Social media can lead to fear of missing out

  • 3.2 Conclusion

Researchers agree that knowledge not only exists in

individual minds but also in the discourse and interactions

between individuals. Such interactions support active

participation, which is an essential element in student

learning. Learners need to develop skills to share knowledge

and to learn with others, both in face-to-face situations and

through technology including social media. Students build

learning communities by working collaboratively to construct

knowledge. Social media serves as a tool to facilitate the

development of these learning communities by encouraging

collaboration and communication. Moreover, these interactions

reinforce the achievement of desirable learning outcomes.

Students who participate in social media as part of a class

feel more connected to their peers that those students who do

not participate in social media. Social media allows students

to not only group themselves with peers who are similar, but

also to enhance and link existing peer groups. In addition to

enhancing established peer groups, social media can bridge

the diversity that exists in classrooms by establishing a

neutral zone in which students can interact with one another

found that students who used social media felt more

emotionally connected to their peers because they felt as

  • though they had people to talk to if they had a problem or if

    they needed help.

Students influence positively regarding the use

of social media. But at the same time is being educated also

about the negative effects of abusing social media.

Students have started relying more on the information

accessible easily on these social networking sites and the

web. This reduces their learning and research capabilities.

Students who get involved in activities on social media

sites while studying result in reduction in their focus of

attention. This causes reduction in their academic

performance, and concentration to study well.

The more time the students spend on these social media

sites, the less time they will spend socializing in person

with others. This reduces their communication skills. They

will not be able to communicate and socialize effectively in

person with others. The employers are getting more and more

unsatisfied with the communication skills of the fresh

graduates due to this reason. The effective communication

skills are key to success in the real world.

  • Students mostly use slang words or shortened forms of

words on social networking sites. They start relying on the

computer grammar and spelling check features. This reduces

their command over the language and their creative writing

    skills.

Students, while searching and studying online, get

attracted to using social media sites and sometimes they

forget why they are using internet. This wastes their time

and sometimes students are not able to deliver their work in

    the specified time frame.

Students get low grades in school due to lack of the

    desired information and writing skills.

The students motivational level reduces due to the use

of these social networking sites. They rely on the virtual

environment instead of gaining practical knowledge from the

    real world.

The excessive use of these sites affects the mental as

well as physical health. Students do not take their meals on

time and take proper rest. They take excessive amount of

coffee or tea to remain active and focused which effects

    negatively on their health.

  • The overuse of these sites on a daily basis has many

negative effects on the physical and mental health of students

making them lethargic and unmotivated to create contact with

the people in person. The parents should check and balance on

their children when they use the internet. They should be on

guard whether they are using it for appropriate time period

or not. The peers and teachers should also help students make

them aware of the negative effects and explain what they are

losing in the real world by sticking to these social

    networking sites.

And last, students got psychologically affected because

of wrong information receive, misinterpretation of their

status and a free judgment from the netizen. Some can resist

the negative impact but when continue it cause insanity and

mental disorder. The victims can create too much thinking of

their problem that was forecasted publicly through the social

media. Theyd lost their privacy. And felt no more place to

go and hide just to preserve their reputation.

  • 3.3 Recommendations

After the researches examines all the data, theyd come

up to a solution for recommendation to give twist for the

effect of the social media to the students education. Cited

below are the best solicited advices to protect the students

from a friendly scamming of social media:

Schools administration must prohibit the use of

cellular phones during classroom. All gadgets that

can be used to access to those sites must be surrender

    during class hour.

School heads must make law that mentors must be a good

role model to their students. Even instructors must

not allow browsing personal messages or posting

    comments during class hour.

Only upon the advice of the instructor can be allowed

    students to used social sites.

Instructor must have a link account of his students

for monitoring purposes; students who often seen as

online even beyond his classs time will request for

    psychological counseling.

Students who dont control his self in posting blogs,

selfie and other unimportant matter will recommend

for psychological counseling; its a good training

  • ground for discipline and will developed their

    obedience to their superior.

For assignments, projects or research; the website

must be included always so the instructors can check

if theyd just copy and paste it. Students must oblige

to extend their own ideas even they have a reference

    from websites.

There must have a weekly follow-ups for the class

discussion, using students memory alone. A simple

memory recall will help their minds activate in

remembering previous discussion rather than taking

pictures of the latter then just cheat thru their

    cellular phones.

Schools must have a contact with the parents or

guardians of the student, a hand to hand help to

eliminate the nonsense using of facebook, twitter,

    and instagram.

Parents should be the one responsible first in

advising their children for the too much lingering

    for social media.

Social Media can be used only by the instructor to

confront hard to deal student. Commenting and advising

  • them secretly thru private message is safer than to

    posting it publicly.

Government must implement a law that prohibits

students in entering internet caf during class hour,

and beyond that hour students are allowed only to make

assignments and chatrooms of every internet caf must

    be closed for all students.

Any violator of that law when passed must be set an

example thru force closing of their establishment.

Schools must request help and collaborate with the

Department of Education to resolve issues how they

will guard students on their education to avoid the

negative effect to their studies and lives.
