INTRODUCTION
The E n g l i s h phrases i n t h i s book are grouped by subject and are s e l e c t e d f o r t h e i r d i r e c t n e s s , b r e v i t y , and relevance to the needs of newly a r r i v e d r e s i d e n t s of the United States. They are, f o r the most p a r t , presented i n the form of s h o r t , t w o - l i n e dialogues.
The phrases and supplementary vocabulary i n the 19 u n i t s cover a wide range of s i t u a t i o n s and serve to introduce new Laotian r e s i d e n t s to the d a i l y a c t i v i t i e s of American l i f e . The two w o r d l i s t s provide terms which are most f r e quently needed. In many phrases, the important E n g l i s h words and t h e i r Lao equivalents are underlined. The cas s e t t e tapes which accompany t h i s phrasebook are a v a i l a b l e s e p a r a t e l y , and provide spoken models of both the E n g l i s h and Lao phrases.
As with a l l phrasebooks, t h i s one i s not intended as a step-by-step textbook f o r l e a r n ing E n g l i s h . I t i s intended as a handy r e f e r ence book f o r immediate use when E n g l i s h phrases or words are needed.
This phrasebook i s l a r g e l y an adaptation of the Vietnamese-English Phrasebook (CAL, 1975) by Nguyen Hy Quang. I t i s based on needs as experienced by Indochinese f a m i l i e s who have been a r r i v i n g i n the United States s i n c e 1975. This Laotian e d i t i o n has been adapted and tra n s l a t e d by Khamchong Luangpraseut. The c a l l i g r a p h y was a l s o done by Mr. Luangpraseut. Most of the i l l u s t r a t i o n s were generously provided by H a l i n a Luangpraseut.
