Mount Royal was established in 1910 and today has more than 13,000 students in bachelor degree, applied degree, collaborative degree, university transfer, diploma, and certificate programs. We offer programs in arts and science, nursing and health, business, communications, community studies, design, education, performing arts, and aboriginal studies. We work with educational institutions, business associations and government agencies across Canada and around the world in providing quality programming and personalized teaching.

Mount Royal University’s campus (Lincoln Park) is located in the southwest part of Calgary near the downtown core. The campus includes a blend of modern academic buildings and park-like green areas, pathways and sports fields. Students are supported by a range of services including a full-service library, computer labs, wireless study areas, personal and academic counselling, first-class recreation facilities, cafeteria and student centre.

The Languages InstituteWe help you improve your language skills for academic study, work, travel or personal development and offer full-time, part-time and customized programs designed to meet your particular goals. Our classes are culturally diverse and our instructors provide individual attention to your needs.

Program RecognitionThe Languages Institute program is accredited by the Languages Canada Quality Assurance Scheme, is a member of TESL Canada, a licensed ACE TESOL training site and is authorized by ETS® for delivery of Internet -based testing. If students have concerns and are unable to clarify them at the institutional level, they may refer the matter to Languages Canada.

Full-time English Language ProgramThere are four full-time programs at Mount Royal University: English Foundations (EF), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Advanced Communication (EAC) and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

Length of ProgramsAll classes in the EF, EAP, EAC and TEFL programs are 12 weeks long. The approximate dates and deadlines are below. Classes run from Monday to Friday, with 22.5 hours of class time and 27.5 total hours of study each week. Homework is required in all full-time classes.

The Languages Institute will accept applications after the deadline, but please allow enough time to have your study permit processed.

English Language Programs

English Foundations (EF)EF Levels 1 to 3 focus on listening and speaking skills useful inside and outside the classroom. You will study grammar to improve your accuracy with English. We will also help you to express yourself in writing and to improve your reading while you increase your vocabulary. These classes are not suitable for new beginners.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)EAP Levels 1 to 3 provide a non-credit academic preparation program for students who wish to focus on accuracy in English or who need to improve their English skills before entering university, college or technical school. You will develop academic reading and writing and advanced grammar skills as well as listening and speaking skills useful in an academic setting.

Graduates of EAP Level 3 with an 80% average satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirement (ELP) for credit courses in degree, applied degree, collaborative degree, university transfer and certificate or diploma programs at Mount Royal University.

English for Advanced Communication (EAC)The purpose of this program is to help you develop high intermediate to low advanced oral fluency and accuracy and to apply your knowledge of English to meet your future personal, professional and academic goals.

Three days a week, you will study listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. Two days a week, you have specialized language development courses in a variety of modules such as film study, idioms, or Canadian culture.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)This program provides second language speakers the opportunity to gain two Canadian certificates in teaching English (the ACE TESOL certificate and the Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) certificate) to prepare to teach English as a foreign language in their home country. It includes 10 hours of practicum experience, in-class teaching experience and individualized feedback on lesson preparation.

Placement into the ProgramYou should plan to arrive a week before the term starts.You must write a Placement Test before classes begin. The Test will determine your level and the program that is appropriate for you. Please contact our office with your confirmed arrival date in order to schedule a Placement Test.

Part-time ProgramsThe Languages Institute offers part-time study in afternoon, evening and weekend classes as well as online courses. These classes are not suitable for lower level students.

Reading / WritingYou will learn strategies to improve your general reading comprehension and increase your reading vocabulary and your writing skills.

Listen Up! This class helps you to develop your listening skills and vocabulary.

Speak Up! You will develop strategies and have opportunities to practice your daily conversation skills.

Tune Up! Tune up your pronunciation. Includes vowel and consonant sounds, word and sentence stress, rhythm and intonation patterns.

Excellence in Spoken EnglishLearn how to reduce your accent in order to speak more clearly.

Intensive TOEFL PreparationThis course prepares you for the iBT exam, which includes speaking, listening, reading and writing.

IELTS Tutorial OnlineThis online course prepares you to succeed in the IELTS exam. 30 or 90 days of unlimited access

Academic Vocabulary OnlineFocus on the most frequently used academic words in a university environment. 30 or 90 days of unlimited access.

Business English ProgramManner of Speaking Gain confidence in your listening and speaking skills for the workplace through theme-based activities.

Business Writing: Office SkillsLearn and develop essential writing and reading skills to function in a professional business setting.

SpeechcraftRefine your workplace speaking and listening skills with a focus on specialized and advanced language. This course is offered on a customized basis.

Business Writing: Executive SkillsPolish your advanced writing skills targeting common trouble areas. Enhance your reading skills for the workplace. This course is offered on a customized basis.

RefundsA request for withdrawal must be received in writing before classes begin. You will be asked to show us (a) the original letter of acceptance or (b) an acceptance letter from another school or (c) a reserved plane ticket out of Canada or (d) a copy of the letter from the Canadian Embassy. The Languages Institute keeps the application fee and a $250 tuition deposit. The balance will be refunded in 4 - 6 weeks using the same method you paid by.

Transfer to Another TermIf you cannot attend classes in the term you requested, we will transfer your full tuition to the next term if you applied before the application deadline. If you applied after the application deadline, we will transfer your tuition minus the $250 tuition deposit. We will only transfer the tuition to a new term one time. You must request a transfer in writing before classes begin.

General Information for International Students at the Languages Institute

Admission Requirements to the Languages InstituteYou must be at least 18 years oldORIf you are under 18 and you have completed high school, you must have a legal custodian in or close to Calgary. Contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada at www.cic.gc.ca for details. We must have the proper custodian documents and copies of your high school transcripts before we process your application.

How to ApplyComplete the online application www.mtroyal.ca/InternationalEd/elp_application.shtml or print the application on the website and send it to us before the deadline. You must include full payment. When this payment is received, we will send you a Letter of Acceptance. The Letter of Acceptance will show how many terms you have paid for and the dates of your study.

The Languages Institute will accept applications after the deadline, but please allow enough time to have your study permit processed. *Refer to Transfer to Another Term policy.

Study Permit RequirementsIf you are studying for more than six months, you will need a study permit from the Canadian government. Your Letter of Acceptance is used to apply for a study permit. Students must apply for a study permit from outside Canada. Students with a study permit can work on campus.

If you are studying for less than six months, you do not need a study permit; however, you may need a temporary resident visa. Please visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website for current information.

The Languages Institute takes no responsibility for Immigration matters.

Conditional AcceptanceYou may apply for a conditional acceptance letter for a credit program at Mount Royal University. Please include this information and fee on the application form. We will reserve a place for you in the full-time credit program in Open Studies. When you have met the English Language Proficiency requirement (ELP) and high school subject requirements, you can continue to study in a full-time credit (university) program.

Wyckham House Student CentreThis Centre is the student-owned and operated home of the Students’ Association at Mount Royal University. It includes a variety of food kiosks and many other services.

Student Services

ResidenceMount Royal has modern, well-equipped apartment-style and townhouse Residence units. The student Residence is a short walk to class and a great place to meet new friends. If you want to live in Residence, you must apply well in advance.

Each unit has a shared kitchen, living room (including television), storage area and bathroom. Everyone has a private room with a bed and desk and wireless internet. You are responsible for buying and cooking your own food. Shopping and convenience stores are within a five-minute walk.

Airport PickupOur airport pickup service will meet you at the airport and take you to your new home in Calgary. Please include this information and fee on the application form.

RecreationRecreation is an excellent place to exercise and learn new skills. There is a fitness centre, indoor running/walking track, salt water pool, indoor climbing wall, triple gymnasium, aerobics studios, squash courts, outdoor tennis and beach volleyball courts. Membership is extra for Languages Institute students.

Computer LabWe have a dedicated computer lab for ESL students, including a full-time lab monitor who can help you to use the software or equipment. We have specialized language-learning software that you can use during class or for extra practice. Your full-time English class will go to the Computer Lab on a regular basis.

Student Learning ServicesThe Student Learning Services provides free support from learning consultants, peer-tutors and workshops. Individual learning consultations are available for EAP 3 students.

LibraryOur library provides an excellent study environment seven days a week during the school year. It contains a wide collection of books, videos, DVDs, research materials, magazines and newspapers. Computer labs are available for students in the library and in various other locations throughout the campus.

Other Options

Summer Immersion English July or AugustWe have combined an intensive English program with cultural activities for a dynamic one-month program. You are placed into classes according to your speaking ability. In the Core program, you will focus on vocabulary and idioms, listening skills, improving grammar in speaking, discussion, debate and everyday speaking skills. During the Module component of the program, you will choose which aspect of language to work on (reading, listening, speaking, grammar, writing, pronunciation).

Classes are Monday to Friday in the morning. Each week’s theme is explored through language study, guest speakers and extra activities. Assignments or field trips are planned for some afternoons. Optional organized tours to the Rocky Mountains and other locations are available on the weekends.

Students who want a more intensive study experience can also register in an IELTS or TOEFL preparation course.

Customized TrainingInternational Education provides a high level of quality and professionalism in our customized training program. Courses that suit your schedule are available in: pronunciation, conversation, grammar, reading and writing and can apply to academic or work-related objectives. Instructors are TESL Canada certified.

Acceptance into Full-time Credit ProgramsAfter you have met the English Language Proficiency requirement (ELP) for Mount Royal University, you can be accepted into a credit program. The ELP can be demonstrated through completion of EAP Level 3 with an 80% passing grade and by other means (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).

You will need to submit official high school and/or post-secondary transcripts with English translation to complete the credit application process.
