Objectives
• Students will form the past of verbs ending in e.
• Students will form the past of verbs ending in a consonant and y of verbs ending in one vowel followed by one consonant.

LessonYou can make most verbs show past time just by adding –ed. However, the spelling of some
verbs changes in other ways when you add –ed.
Some verbs end with e. Drop the e and add –ed.
race + ed = raced joke + ed = joked
Some verbs end with a consonant and a y. Change the y to i when you add –ed.
cry + ed = cried worry + ed = worried
Some verbs end with one vowel followed by one consonant. Double the consonant and add
–ed.
stop + p + ed = stopped
hug + g + ed = hugged
