The New Schoolfor Information Services

A small, unique institute offering the Higher Professional Education (hbo) degree program Bachelor of Marketing Communications.

Where you’re trained for a career in a multi-faceted profession that’s constantly changing.

Where we focus on practical skills and creative aspects: writing, language competencies,

photography and graphic arts; and on new developments: cross-media, web design, digi-

tal marketing.

Where we take an interest in the personal development of each student. In the classes,

projects and internships, and simply from day to day.

Where contacts with parents are important.

Where enthusiastic lecturers don’t only teach but also work in professional practice.

Where contacts with alumni lead to internships and jobs.

Where we work in small classes.

Where all the individual attention that you’re given makes studying easier, but you still

have to work hard and get nothing for free; and where your attendance is essential.

Where we’re literally in a house where you can feel at home.

Those are the words of a marketing communications manager. They reflect our degree pro-

gram exactly. A program that provides students with exceptional preparation for the employ-

ment market. A program whose graduates have excellent positions ranging from marketing

manager to business journalist, from advertising creative to professional photographer, from

event manager to web designer, from communications department personnel to self-em-

ployed professional.

Interested? Like more information? Then take a look at www.thenewschool.nl, come to our

Open Days, or even better: make an appointment to spend a day with us, participating in the

program.

Kees Spijker

Principal of The New School for Information Services

‘Marketing communications is the most exciting profession ever! It involves so many different dimensions: people, companies, products & services, strategy, creativity, in-fluence, societal aspects, emotions, senses, language and images. And whether you work in the general area or you’re more specialised, it will always be an incredibly fascinating field of work.’

The facts:The New School was founded in 1987.

The New School is an approved (NVAO accredited) higher professional education

(hbo) degree program. You’re entitled to student finance and a student public trans-

port pass.

Each year we accept a maximum of 40 students, with 12 – 14 students per class. You

can be accepted with a Dutch havo, vwo, mbo4 or equivalent high school diploma.

Candidates over the age of 21 who don’t have a diploma can be accepted if they

pass a 21+ test.

We always hold a personal interview in advance, where we look together (usually

with the parents) at your motivation, interests and abilities. Giving attention to how

you learn. We have a lot of experience with degree program switchers and transfer

students from private high schools.

Before starting the program, new students take a literacy and numeracy test, so that

we can identify any ‘gaps’. We also look at each student’s studying and learning sty-

les.

The program starts once a year, in September.

It is a 4-year program.

In years 1 and 2 you’re in the school each day, for 20 – 25 contact hours per week. In

addition to lectures, there are seminars given by external experts and you also work

on projects. In year 2 you have a study trip abroad.

In year 3 you do the first internship, which is of an orienting character. For the se-

cond half of year 3, you’re back in the school for lectures.

In year 4 you have literature and communications assignments and the second in-

ternship, which you link to your final-year dissertation. For this, you receive intensive

supervision.
