Two years of fencing newsThis is our 24th issue, which means that as soon as this edition is in front of you, we’ve been doing this for exactly two years. On 6 June 2011, we sent you our first Fencing Observer, at that time still formatted as a newsletter. Over those two years we have written 193 articles. We have reported on 5 exhibitions and 3 members’ meetings of industry associations. We have introduced you to over 70 new products and made 8 documentaries.
yourself and decide for yourself
how important that quality is to you.
We allow every manufacturer to
tell you why their product, service
or investment is that good, but we
have never taken money for that.
Each month it has been a challenge
to have our magazine translated
into all of the languages on time.
Fortunately, we are assisted by
translators and correctors, but after
translating, the layout for every
page has to be done separately
for every language. Over the past
two years it has happened here
and there that a photo caption
or a title was not translated to the
correct language, or that we had to
do some small last-minute transla-
tions ourselves and made spelling
or grammar errors. Although we do
our very best to prevent this from
happening, we are not always suc-
cessful at that. So we hope for your
understanding and that you do not
think that our translators do not do
their jobs properly.
We have especially enjoyed our jobs very much over
the last two years. We have met many nice people and
learned a lot and are therefore definitely not planning
to stop. In fact, we have extended our team with four
freelance journalists, so we will be able to keep you up
to date on the ins and outs of the fencing industry in the
future as well.
Happy reading with this issue
24, we will now open up a
bottle of champagne and
then quickly head
back to work on
the next issue.
But there was more over
the past two years. Our
layout changed from newsletter to
magazine, our name changed from
Fencing Observer to FOBS and cir-
culation nearly doubled: by now we
reach 5,400 readers at over 3,500
companies.
We have tried to report all of the
news items we presented to you
over the past two years as objec-
tively and neutrally as possible. That
probably was the most difficult
part of our job. There simply are
many conflicting interests in our
industry and we write about as
many different manufacturers as
possible. They all manufacture
different qualities, from Fiats to
Ferraris. If you report positively
about one thing, people tend to
jump to the conclusion that you’ll
have a negative opinion about the
other, which isn’t necessarily true at
all. By consistently describing the
different products as specifically
as possible, we try to give you as
good an image of them as possible.

Gates should also be mechanically safe
According to English newspaper
Norwich Evening News, the woman
in her fifties got out of her car to
inspect the gate, when the leaf fell
over, crushing the victim (click to
read the full story). The gate had
been installed only two months
prior. How the accident could
happen is still unclear.
In the English town of Blofield (near Norwich, Norfolk County) a woman was fatally injured on Wednesday 18 April when the leaf of a cantilever gate fell on top of her. The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the case, police have since ruled out a crime.
Early March there was a similar
accident in the suburbs of Man-
chester. Here a 68-year-old woman
ended up under the leaf of a swing
gate which toppled on her. She too
died of her injuries and in this case
the cause is also still unclear.

British organisation Gate Safe,
which is committed to making
gates safer, is calling for a revision
of the installation check lists, for
manual and automated gates.
Founder Richard Jackson says: “The
mid-April accident might have been
caused by the lack of a mechanical
stop, which would
have prevented
the leaf falling
out of its
conductor.
Such a stop
is a vital safety measure,
because end switches and
other electronic equipment
can sometimes fail. It’s useless
to follow the guidelines for
automated gates, which have
settled in by now, if the basic
principles are forgotten. No
safety measure for automated
gates can prevent an accident
if there are serious flaws to the
construction of the gate itself.”
Gate Safe therefore is adding
some pieces of advice to its
list of safety measures and
is urgently calling on British
consumers to only have gates
installed at the driveway by
installers who have under-
taken the Gate Safe Aware
training. There are over 100 of
them in the United Kingdom
by now.
1 Automated gates must be
fitted with a mechanical stop.
2 Gate support posts (also
referred to as portals)
must offer a design that
is strong enough to withstand
a high wind load on the leaf.
3 Foundations must be
sized correctly to offer a
stable and secure base.
4 Swing gates must feature
the correct size hinge pins
and care must be taken
to monitor wear and tear.
5 Automated gates are generally
installed due to the regular
usage / high volume of
traffic and as such, are subject to
more wear and tear than a manual
gate, so regular maintenance /
routine inspection is essential.

LED lights from LocinoxPlug & Play design lighting for gates and fencing
Gates and fencing need to protect homes and buildings, but have an aesthetic function also. Increasingly we see lighting fitted onto or in fencing posts, or onto other parts of the fence or gate.
Belgian company Locinox from Waregem
(between Kortrijk and Gent) is responding to this
trend. The company developed the Tricone: LED lighting
in a modern, stylish, aluminium housing. Atmospheric,
functional and waterproof for outdoor use.
LED technologyThe name Tricone is referring to the 3 applied High
Flux LED’s. The result: much light at minimal energy
consumption. Combined with a 140° beam angle and a
lifespan of 50,000 hours this results in good lighting of
the fencing line.
Simple fittingThe Tricone is easily fitted with the provided blind fitting
plugs. The included drilling template ensures that the
lighting can be fitted to any gate or fence quickly.
ConnectingThe Tricone operates on 12V AC or DC, for which Locinox
also developed an electrical supply box. This box can be
fitted next to other electrical supplies in an aluminium,
powder coated housing. This so called P-Box houses a
86 mm DIN rail. Up to 20 Tricones can be connected to
each supply box.

Berlemann gets into detection
Sliding gate manufacturer and system supplier for mechanical perimeter protec-tion Berlemann Torbau from Neuenkirchen (near Münster in Germany) is getting into electronical detection. Under the name Inova Peri-Net, Berlemann is putting together a new product range for inte-grated, electronical perimeter protection.
“With electronical perimeter protection we are making
our existing range even more attractive and we’re
offering our customers integrated one-stop solutions,”
assures Nikolaus Berlemann, CEO and son of the founder.
CooperationFor this Berlemann started a cooperation with British
company Detection Technologies from Ripley (in Derby-
shire near Nottingham). This company has been active in
the detection industry for many years now. The product
range of this British company consists mainly of line
sensor systems, for which Berlemann now has exclusive
dealership. www.privacon.nlwww.privacon.nl

IntegrationThe purpose of the new Inova Peri-Net
product range goes further than
selling detection materials: “With our
know-how of mechanical perimeter

High Signal to Noise ratioThe product range reaches from
simple stand alone equipment,
through systems which monitor
multiple areas, to multiple systems
in one network with centralised
administration and alarm control.
All of the Detection Technologies
line sensors have a high Signal to
Noise ratio (SNR), with which real
intruders can be detected and false
alarms avoided.
Up to 1,000 metersThe latest product is the Vibra-Sec-
tor detection system, which can
guard a section of 1,000 meters
(3,280 ft) of fencing with a single
control box. Using segment units,
this detection section can be
divided into 100 different zones.
This way the benefits of the rel-
atively cheap line sensors are
combined with exact location indi-
cation, which can otherwise only
be achieved with point sensors or a
multitude of control boxes.
The Vibra-Sector system can guard 1,000 metres of
fencing and 100 zones with one read-out unit.
integrate the mechanical and electrical
components, which up until now have
mostly been offered as two separate
entities, into a new total package with
higher performance.”

Detection fenceAn initial product is the Inova
Peri-Net Detection fence, which
was developed in-house. It
consists of triple wire
panels, in which
two cable ducts
for the sensor
cable and an
optional second
cable are inte-
grated. “Compared to
a standard twin wire panel,
there’s an extra horizontal wire for
the cable duct welded to the inside
of the panel,” says Berlemann. “The
horizontal wire on the outside was
moved upwards a little bit, thus
covering the cable on the outside.
This makes the cable almost un-
recognisable at first glance and
hardly reachable from the outside.
From the inside, however, it is easily
accessible.
Fitting-friendly clipsFitting the cable is done with clips,
which are clasped onto the vertical
wire, over the cable duct. This way
of fitting is easier and faster than
working with the usual tie wraps.
The clips clamp to the vertical
wire so tightly, that the alarm is
triggered when somebody tries to
remove the clips.
The Inova triple-wire panel
comes standardly equipped
with two cable ducts.
The line sensor is laid into the cable
duct out of wire easily and safely.
FutureThe detection fence and the
line sensor system are only the
beginning. “Soon many more new
products for integrated, electronical
perimeter protection will become
available under the name of Inova
Peri-Net,” says Berlemann. “We are
preparing them now. Apart from
systems for climb over and break-
through detection, in the future it will
also be possible to interlink all of the
Inova perimeter protection products
and control them centrally.”
Comfort and the protection of property and people are becoming more and more important. Therefore, self-closing doors with adjustable speed are often a must.
Where overhead door closers meet their limits, the DICTATOR special door closers come in use. They can be mounted on all outdoor access gates e.g. to industrial plants, kindergartens, playgrounds, private gardens.
And what is more, the invisibly installed RTS door closer is especially suitable for interior doors that have to meet high appearance standards.

New design fencing from NormacloArchitect involved in designing Clomoon and Verticalia
With the new fencing types Verticalia and Clomoon, French company Normaclo added two extraordinary design products to its range. Both types were designed in cooperation with an architect and are primarily meant for apartment buildings, business premises and public buildings where high-end products are required.
BY HAN NEIJENHUIS
The Verticalia is in essence a
modern version of the tra-
ditional fence made up of a line
of wooden posts placed in the
ground, close to each other. The
new fencing model consists of
vertical aluminium profiles. These
are welded onto a horizontal beam,
which is then screwed to a foun-
dation below ground level. Hence
there are no horizontal lines in this
fencing type, which was rightfully
baptized Verticalia.
The Verticalia was designed for a housing project in
France. This model complies with the demands for
robustness and aesthetics. The architect wanted a
modern fence, which marks the boundary between
public domain and private property clearly and in an
aesthetical way. Sionnière: “The Verticalia is very suitable
for buildings or houses where high demands are made on
the appearance. We’re also definitely thinking of public
sector buildings.”
The bars are trapezoid shaped
profiles of 100x40x20 mm. On
the outside they are narrow,
gradually widening to the inside.
If you are straight in front of
the fence, you can see through
it very well, but seen from an
angle, the fence seems to be
solid. “The trapezoid shape is
purely a design matter, it doesn’t
have that much of a functional
value,” says marketing manager
Emily Sionnière.
11fobs.eu
Emily Sionnière
ClomoonThe idea behind the Clomoon isn’t
much different. This design fence
was also developed by Normaclo,
from Andé (between Paris and
Rouen), in cooperation with an
architect. What’s special about the
Clomoon is the big circle-shaped
curving, exactly in the middle of
each panel. It looks like a full moon.
That’s also what actually gave it it’s
name: it’s a conjunction of “clôture”
(French for fence) and “moon”. In
essence the Clomoon is more of a
classic railing system, with vertical
bars and a beam on top and at the
bottom. These bars are solid strips
of 80x10 mm. This is extraordinary
for Normaclo, normally the fencing
manufacturer works with hollow
profiles. “But many architects aren’t
that fond of hollow, they prefer solid
materials,” says Sionnière.
The curving in the middle of each
railing system gives the fence its
special character. Production is
time-consuming, because many of
the bars need to be bent in exactly
the right place. With the Clomoon
as well, Normaclo is aiming for
the more luxurious projects and
buildings. Sionnière: “The Clomoon
and Verticalia are special products
that supplement our range very well.
With these we aim for the market with
more luxurious design fencing.”

Perimeter Protection Group
What do you think of when
you hear “detection systems
for perimeter protection?” Of prisons?
Border security? Militairy bases?
Correct. But do you also think of
junkyards? Or liquor stores? Who
would have thought, that detection
systems are also very interesting for
these applications!?
For some years now resource prices
have been at a high level and the
trend is climbing. Copper and steel
fetch high amounts on the black
market and this lucrative business
makes organised crime step into
this arena. In the old days a fence
and a watchdog were enough to
secure a junkyard. Nowadays even
the fence itself gets stolen. However,
putting up an effective fence with
electronic systems can often be
done for a fraction of the potential
amount of damages. But where can
scrap-dealers, liquor store owners
and recycling companies down
the street inform themselves of
these technical possibilities? Does
a scrap-dealer visit the Perimeter
Protection in Nuremburg? Or the
Security in Essen?
Other kinds of businesses are also
increasingly dealing with these
kinds of thefts: car dealers, solar
parks, metal workers, cable laying
companies, D.I.Y. shops, power
companies and many more. Essen-
tially, everything that is stored
outdoors becomes a potential
target. Usually, these valuables
are not or hardly insured against
theft. Fortunately, more and more
insurance industry associations
deal with the issue.
It is hard to believe but true - the
less organised gangs are resorting
to stealing the ‘lightest’ goods
in the world - empty bottles.
Stealing them at the backdoor at
night, returning them through
the frontdoor in the morning and
collecting the deposit. The short
distance of transport compensates
for the small revenues. The fences at
liquor stores are becoming higher
and higher, but there is no signifi-
cant result. A two by two feet hole is
all that is needed to pull the empty
bottles out of the outdoors storage
by the case.
About valuable waste and empty bottles
Here the same question
arises: how is the liquor
store owner supposed to
know about the possibilities
and especially the effective-
ness of electronic perimeter
protection?
Let’s help prevent empty
bottles from being stolen.
Cheers!

Güngor increases capacityNew storage hall enables better stock management
German fencing systems manufacturer Metallbau Güngör from Wickede (near Dortmund) has extended its storage grounds by 4,000 m² (43,000 ft²) in response to the growing turnover. On the grounds, a new 1,200 m² (13,000 ft²) hall was built, in which materials can be stored covered. An awning of another 1,000 m² (11,000 ft²) makes sure that loading and unloading can be done without any weather effects.
“Customers want to keep less stock and are very satisfied
when we provide them with the right materials just in time.”
14 fobs.eu
“We’ve invested a lot in our pro-
duction and logistics over the past
few years,” says CEO Veli Güngör. “We
now own both a circular laser and a
flatbed lasermachine. With those, we
can produce not only very precise, but
also very fast. We’ve also extended our
fleet to five company-owned trucks,
so that we are able to deliver our
orders ourselves as much as possible.
This makes us very flexible in logistics
as well. Creating more storage space
was the next step.”
Just-in-time“During the 90s we were a supplier for
the automotive industry. In those days
we specialized in flexibility, because
‘just-in-time’ deliveries are demanded
in that industry. The fencing industry
is headed in the same direction
more and more. Customers want to
keep less stock and are very satisfied
when we provide them with the right
materials just in time.”

Dutch company Adr. van der Voort from Kwintsheul (near The Hague) is getting a new start. The international Van Leeuwen Pipe and Tube Group took over the activities of the tubing wholesaler which went bankrupt two months ago. On Van der Voort’s website there’s an announcement stating that the logistics department has been busy with the restart since 15 April.
BY ROLF HARTZUIKER
Partly because of these reasons, losses arose
which in the end were too big to catch up
with. When on top of that it turned out that
one of the shareholders wouldn’t put up an
additional guarantee, the bank pulled the
plug at the beginning of 2013.
Some sources report that Van der Voort is
to be integrated into Van Leeuwen in its
entirety, after which the Kwintsheul branch
would be closed down. On 15 May the
company’s inventory and rolling stock will
be auctioned off, according to Troostwijk
Auctions’ schedule.
“The two companies’ activities partially
overlap,” says Van Dijk. But Van der Voort will
not be giving up any activities, according to
him. “We were active in several industries and
that will not change. Especially the fencing
industry had a significant share in our activ-
ities and will continue to do so.”
John van Dijk says that the
company isn’t fully operational
yet, following the takeover by Van
Leeuwen. “We are still in a transi-
tional phase,” he says. “We’ve only
been working on it for two weeks
now.” According to him, seven of
the thirty employees the company
had prior to the takeover, came
along to Van Leeuwen. Among
these seven there are none from
the old management.
Van Dijk will not say anything about
the causes of the bankruptcy. The
bankruptcy file drafted by curator
LL.M. J. van Vlijmen however, states
that the direct cause was the
Rabobank Westland’s cancelling
the company’s credit. Their turnover
had been declining steadily over the
past few years, due to the financial
crisis. Furthermore the decreased
prices of steel forced them to depre-
ciate their stock value.

40 years of thinking in solutions
From bars for staircases and banisters to complete solutions for access control. Family business Mauriks Solutions has made tremendous progress over the past four decades. CEO Carlos Mauriks looks back and forward.
BY FLORIS DOGTEROM
It all started in a garage in
Maren-Kessel, a small town in the
Dutch province of North Brabant.
There, the parents of current CEO
of Mauriks Solutions Carlos Mauriks,
started a small business in accesso-
ries for staircases and banisters. Fast
forward to 2013: Mauriks Solutions,
currently located on modern
business premises in the province’s
capitol ‘s-Hertogenbosch, offers
a broad range of components for
staircases, (ornamental) fencing
and gates, complemented by
access control systems.
“My parents started with a wholesale
business in bars for staircases,” says
Carlos. “Those are also used in
fencing, which quickly made us active
in that industry as well. We have
added a complete product range over
the years, eventually also including
components for industrial fencing
and cantilever sliding gates. When,
at the end of the 1980s, demand for
gate automation increased, we also
specialized in that.”
Not box moversWhereas his company was previ-
ously called Mauriks Group, Carlos
decided to change the name to
Mauriks Solutions two years ago.
At first sight it seems somewhat
fashionable (how many thousands
of companies nowadays have a
company name with ‘solutions’ in
it and a fence isn’t a solution, or
is it?), but Carlos explains that he
does much more than move boxes
around. “We not only supply the parts,
but we also think along with the
customer and the end user, about the
best total solution for their situation.
Does the end user want alternative
controls for his gate, with a cell phone
for example? We will then find out
what the possibilities are.”

obtain training and workshops
in the field of automated access
control, from the company’s
knowledge center. On top of that

German fencing posts with clamp strips or counter plates are usually provided with plastic hanging sockets. Deutsche Zauntechnik is considering providing these posts with aluminium socket fixings and is hoping for your help.
Fixing sockets out of aluminiumAOS is considering introducing a new type of fixings
Carsten Statnik is product
manager at AOS-Stahl, the
company behind the trademark
Deutsche Zauntechnik. He says:
“Nearly all of the suppliers who offer
these post types, use plastic fixings.
In itself there is nothing wrong with
that, but we are always looking for
ways of improving our products
so the question arose why these
sockets should be made of plastic.
Statnik continues: “Aluminium
fixings can not catch fire or melt when
someone holds a lighter to them. They
are also sturdier, which is advanta-
geous if someone were to try to pull a
panel out of the fence with brute force.
They can also be coated along with the
rest of the post. This means that you
no longer have fixings of a diverging
colour, when you order posts in a
specific colour. The fixings also do not
bleach from sunlight, or at least not any
faster than the post’s coating, meaning
the post will remain evenly coloured,
even after many years. It also makes
the post’s appearance somewhat more
sophisticated, but that is a matter of
taste of course.”

There is also a downside to
aluminium fixings. Statnik: “Plastic
offers a greater sound insulation than
aluminium. In fencing with aluminium
fixings around a playground there is a
bit more sound, when someone kicks a
ball into the fence. They are also a bit
more expensive, because aluminium
is simply more expensive than plastic.
A post for a 1230 mm panel will be 2
to 3 Euro’s (1,70 to 2,50 Pounds) more
expensive.”
AOS had a trial run done for testing
purposes, but they also need your
help to decide iif they will add the
aluminium fixings to their product
range. Statnik: “We know that many
fencing installers are traditional
people and as long as a system works,
they do not like to deviate from it. In
itself that is not a bad quality, but
it makes us want to know how the
market feels about aluminium fixings,
before we have large quantities of
them made.”
If you have an opinion on the new
aluminium sockets based on on
the photo’s and argumentation in
this article, please click here or go
to fobs.eu/aospollen and let AOS
know what you think. Both positive
and negative response is welcomed.
Filling out the questionnaire will
take less than a minute and will help
AOS tremendously with making a
decision.

Our FOBS sign traveled its first 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), 1,026 to be exact. Following Venlo and Roermond, this month the sign showed up in St. Johann in Tirol, Austria.
Following John van Megen of ABC Fencing South East and
Horst Pricken of Hermetec, Jürgen Fürrutter of Zaunteam
Tirol Unterland was the third finder. He found the signs on a
fence surrounding an Obi D.I.Y. market, where Hermetec left it.
With this new addition there are now 4 signs in the chain.
Jürgen Fürrutter hung the sign chain at a new location, you can
go looking for it once again. Do you recognize the location in
the photo?
As soon as you find the signs, please let us know immedia-
tely via phone: +49 2837 6631005 or e-mail: [email protected]. We
will then announce on our website that the signs were found
so other people won’t go looking for them in vain. Whoever
wants to join the hunt, can stay informed on the latest news

Rules of the game Be a good sportEveryone who works for a fencing
company, can participate. All you need
are pincers, binding wire or tie wraps
and of course a sign from the company
you work for.
Step-by-step plan for the finder:1 Take a photo of the signs at the
location where you found them.
2 Cut the chain off the fence.
3 Attach your own sign at the
bottom of the chain.
4 Put up the chain at another fence.
5 Take a picture of the chain at its
new location (try to include a land
mark in your photograph, so the
new location can be recognised).
6 Send the photo’s and the address
(or GPS coordinates) of the new
location to [email protected]
• Put the chain in a place where
lots of people pass by, so the
chances of being found are
greater. For example along a main
road or near an access road.
• Don’t hide the chain on a fence in the
woods, or deep in a residential area.
• Don’t hang the chain in a city
centre, near a football stadium or
any other place where chances
of vandalism are high.
• Hang the chain at least 20 kilometres
(12.5 miles) away from the location
where you found it, otherwise it will
take forever to go around Europe.
• Try to put the chain up again on the
day you found it or the next day.
• Preferably put the chain on a public
fence, owned by the municipality or
the State. If you want to put the chain
on a privately owned fence, check
with the owner of the fence first.
• Make sure the chain is accessi-
ble to the finder, without them
having to violate the law or
jump a two metre wide ditch.
• Don’t endanger traffic.
• Respect other people’s signs.
• Keep up the appearance of the
chain and signs, repair them if they
get damaged along the way.
• Everyone can participate, but when
you find the chain, if your own sign is
already on it, it’s a sign of good sports-
manship to wait another week before
taking down the chain yourself again.
• For those of you who would like to
add a bonus: you could stick a candy
bar or some other small token for the
next finder to the back of your sign.

Zaunteam keeps growing
Franchise concern Zaunteam was able to add five new partners to their chain since the beginning of this year. This puts their total number of branches at 75.
This spring new branches will
open in Emmerich (close to the
German-Dutch border near Arnhem)
and in Memmingen (in between Ulm
and the German-Austrian border).
These openings follow the opening
of a branch in the North-Austrian
region Wachau-Waldviertel. In
March, Veith Richter celebrated
the opening of the German branch
in Rheingau Taunus and
at the beginning of April
Adriano Tomasino opened
the Zaunteam Wallis branch
in southernSwitzerland. “We
have fifteen new branches
planned for this year,” says
Zaunteam Franchise CEO
Philipp Scheibli.

The franchisees build their own
businesses as entrepreneurs in
their own regions. While building
these, they profit from the advise,
the experience and also from the
name Zaunteam. The headquar-

information from assembly manuals
to management training and
support with day-to-day activities.
Meanwhile all of the entrepreneurs
in the chain combined offer employ-

Saudi Arabia will be placing a 1,500 kilometer
(932 mile) fence on the border with Yemen, to
keep out migrant workers and smugglers. It is not
known to us what type of fencing it will be, but undoub-
tedly it will contain sharp parts and it probably won’t be
a pretty sight either. The fencing installer who gets the
job will have his work cut out for him.
In Puchberg in Austria, a female cyclist who couldn’t
make the turn after a slope, was impaled on a wooden
fence. She was seriously injured and taken to hospital by
helicopter. It proves once again that spikes on a low
fence are not a good idea.
In Needham Market in England, 10 metres of fencing
caught fire. Fortunately, the fire could be put out
quickly. Fire hazard is not the first thing we thought
of in fencing, but it’s proven to be possible. Especially
with wooden fences, that is.

A trend which nearly passed us by, did eventu-
ally reach the fencing world. It’s called Urban
Knitting. Apparently it is the dressing of all kinds of
outdoor objects, such as trees, lampposts and also
fences, with threads. So it really is a kind of fabric graffiti.
We must say that some fences are indeed that ugly that
we cannot actually oppose this.
To conclude in the category world news: Sylvie
van der Vaart together with her new boyfriend
Guillaume Zarka hung a love lock on the fence at the
Pont Neuf bridge in Paris. “From Paris with Love - S & G”,
is what it says on the padlock, which the pair clicked
shut together in mid April. Just so you know.

As manufacturers and suppliers of systems for perimeter security and
access control, we exclusively supply double wire panels that are
galvanised piece by piece (hot dipped or electrolytical galvanised) after
the panels are welded.
This applies to Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
We voluntarily abstain from supplying fencing panels made from

Nearly every fencing company adver-tises through name signs attached to the fence. Some are made out of PVC, others of aluminium and they come in all shapes and sizes. FOBS visited Dutch company Metavo in Leiden, a manufacturer of aluminium signs for fencing companies throughout Europe that showed us how it’s done.

Silk-screen printing and inkjet printingThe company offers two techniques: digital printing and
silk-screen printing. In digital printing, the signs are fed
into a large inkjet printer and come out ready-to-use.
This technique is relatively expensive, it is mostly used
for small issues in which many colours need to be on
the signs. For larger issues (such as fencing signs) with
a limited number of colours, silk-screen printing is more
economical. Besides, silk-screen prints are better UV
resistant. Silk-screen printing is an age-old process, but
how does it really work?

Making a transparentTo be able to be printed on an
aluminium sign, the image which
is meant to be on the sign is first
pre-treated digitally, or re-drawn.
For each colour, the text or image is
printed on a separate transparent in
black ink.
Preparing the silk-screen frameThe silk-screen - very fine polyester
gauze stretched onto a frame - is
provided with a photosensitive
layer.
IlluminatingThe image on the transparent
is pressed onto the silk-screen
frame using a vacuum and
then illuminated. Thus the
image is copied onto the silk-
screen. The parts of the screen
that were not illuminated do
not harden and are washed
out. The screen becomes
pervious again, in the areas
where the images (in this
case as many signs as will fit a
frame) should be.
The image on
the transparent
is pulled tightly
to a silk-screen
frame which was
provided with
a photosensi-
tive layer, by a
vacuum pump.
Once the image is placed on the screen tightly,
the screen is illuminated by a UV lamp.
33fobs.eu
The ink is mixed by hand, until the
correct colour is achieved.
The silk-screen printing machine. The silk-screen printing principle. (Photo: © Wikipedia)
The signs are drying.
PrintingThe ink that is to be used is mixed
to colour. Then the screen is
placed in the silk-screen printing
machine, where the ink is pressed
through the screen onto the sign
with a wiping movement of a long,
plastic strip (the squeegee). When
the image on the sign consists of
multiple colours, this process is
repeated for every colour. While
the signs are placed in a drying
rack in between colours, the silk-
screen frames can be cleaned and
reused.
