Specialized EngineExhaust Silencers
EN Series SilencersMulti-Chamber SilencersForthemajorityofenginesandoperatingconditions,multi-chambertypesilencersprovidemaximumnoiseattenuationwithinacceptablebackpressurelimits.Mostnaturallyaspiratedandsuperchargedenginesneedthistypeofsilencer.Manyturbochargedenginesarebestsilencedwiththisdesignalso.Factorswhichinfluencethechoiceofsilencerdesignareexplainedonthefollowingpage.
ET Series SilencersStraight-Through SilencersSomeenginesrequireverylowexhaustsystembackpressuresformaximumperformance.Manyturbochargedenginesandsomenaturallyaspiratedenginesfallintothiscategory.Fortheseengines,straight-through,reactivesilencersareavailabletoprovideadequatesilencingwhileimposingnegligiblerestrictiononexhaustgasflow.
ES Series SilencersSpark Arresting SilencersOperatinglocationsexistwherefirehazardsandsafetycodesrequireremovalofsparksfromexhaustgases.Universal’ssparkarrestorsilencersareengineeredtoperformthedualfunctionofsparkarrestmentandsilencingforallinternalcombustionengines.
Multi-chamber exhaust silencers for most reciprocating engines.
Straight-through exhaust silencers for engines which demand very low back pressures.
Spark arresting exhaust silencers for engines operating in high potential fire areas.

SizingInformationEngine Exhaust Silencers
Choosingthecorrectexhaustsilencerforagivenengineisanimportantalthoughnotdifficulttask.Firstofall,adegreeofsilencingischosenthatwillsatisfythenoiserequirementsuniquetoeachengineandlocation.Secondly,thesilencersizeisselectedtoaccommodatethespecifiedvolumeofexhaustflowwithoutimposingexcessivebackpressure.
Selection of Silencer Type (Grade)Eachsilencergroupdescribedonpages3–6hasanumberofaserieswithdifferentnoiseattenuationcharacteristics.
Theseriesletterdesignation(e.g.,EN2)indicatesinrelativetermsthedegreeofnoiseattenuation;thehigherthenumber,thegreatertheattenuation.
2 “Industrial”or“Commercial”grade
3 “Residential”grade
4 “Critical”grade
5 “Hospital”grade
TheattenuationcurvesnexttothetablesoneachpageindicatetheexpectedattenuationindBbyoctavebands.
Thesecurvesarebasedupon“typical”applications.Theywillnotnecessarilydefinethepreciseinsertionlossforanyspecificapplicationsincetheinsertionlossachievedmaybeinfluencedsubstantiallybymanyfactors,includingenginesize,type,speed,andunsilencednoiselevelsandfrequencydistribution.
Selection of Silencer SizeTheopenflowareawithinthesilencershouldbelargeenoughtoaccommodatethemaximumpossibleexhaustflowwithoutexceedingtheenginemanufacturer’smaximumallowablebackpressure.Improperlysizedsilencersmaycauselossofpowerordamagetotheengine.
Datarequired:engineexhaustflow(CFM)exhausttemperature(˚F)maximumbackpressure(inchesofwater)
Thefollowingformulasenablethecorrectsilencersizetobequicklydetermined.
1 Calculate gas velocity.
 V=gasvelocity P=backpressure,inchesofwater c=silencerpressuredropcoefficient
(Table1) T=exhaustgastemperature,˚F
Note: Velocity should not exceed15,000 ft/min regardless of the allowable back pressure.
2 Calculate required flow area.
3 From Table 2, select the silencer size which has a flow area equal to or greater than that calculated. The actual back pressure can be calculated as follows:
Universal’sengineexhaustsilencersarehighquality,fullywelded,reactivesilencersdesignedtoreduceexhaustnoiseonalltypesofinternalcombustionengines.Eachengineandeachoperatinglocationrequiresauniquecombinationofsilencerproperties.Forthisreasonmany
differentsilencermodelsarecatalogedtocovermostsilencingproblems.Incaseswherestandardsilencerswillnotmeetaparticularspec,thesecustomsilencerswillsatisfytheapplicationneed.
