PRINCIPAL REFLECTIONS WOW! What a wonderful turnout for our first PCO (Parent Caring Organization) meeting last evening. I counted over 65 people! Driving home, I reflected on the meeting and just how much fun it is was to sit with all of you and chat about the school. Your ideas, and enthusiasm are what is going to make our school the most fabulous, sought-after school in Cleveland! Thank you Robin Fraser and Janice Pohl for taking the lead on getting the parent group going and a giant thanks to all of you who stepped right in last night with ideas and suggestions for the year. What impresses me most is that you did not just throw ideas out there, but instead took immediate action. We have Box Tops and our first fundraiser, an Open House bake sale, already in progress! We are grateful for all of you who made a donation to PCO and who signed up for the various committees. PCO is looking for parents to take on the roles of president, vice president, recording secretary, corresponding secretary and treasurer. If you were not able to attend but would like to get involved (remember our goal is 100% family involvement!), we will have the sign-up sheets available at Open House. INTERNATIONAL INQUIRY Making Maps Matter By Ron Abate Children are inquisitive as to how the world works. Their interest in the physical and human world dovetails with the Campus International School’s interest in having students develop a global perspective. In order to make a global per- spective meaningful to young children, CIS will begin at the local level; we will introduce them to the geography of their community – Cuyahoga County. To assist us in preparing students to under- stand the local physical and human environment, Dr. Mark J. Salling, the Director of Cleveland State’s Northern Ohio Data and Information Serv- ice (NODIS), produced three large-scale maps of Cuyahoga County. The maps provide city bounda- ries, street names and highways. Students will be- gin their exploration of local geography by placing pins in the map to mark their home addresses. Scott Jackson a CIS parent, has agreed to frame the maps for student use. Information will be added as students learn about local landmarks, physical geography and other topics of local interest. Students will inquire into similarities and differences, and patterns in the features they add to the map. Over time, the explo- ration will continue, and the maps will expand to include regional, national and world geographic features. As this occurs, students’ geographical knowledge will grow! INTERNATIONAL INQUIRY Making Maps Matter

Children are inquisitive as to how the world works. Their interest in the physical and human world dovetails with the Campus International School’s interest in having students develop a

global perspective. Music, Art, and Physical Education Happenings

Music- Mr. Locke

Kindergarten: We are continuing to work on our stage presence and “This Little Light of Mine.” Next week we will begin to work on reading and performing rhythm patterns using our voices, hands, and rhythm instruments.

First: We are continuing to practice (“rehearse”) our Native American tune, “Song of Snowflakes.” We are adding rhythm instruments this week. We are also practicing our stage presence and the cor-rect way to get on and off and look like “Professionals!”

Second: Our song in 2nd grade is “John Tanaka.” The Cleveland State University Music Department (Thank you Rita Klinger!) was generous enough to lend us a few xylophones to make this song spe-cial. The Explorers will learn reading skills and working as a “Team” to produce a performance. After this we will take on the challenge of learninga folk song from China, and we will learn to sing it in Mandarin! We will use instru-ments to accompany this song too.

All: Each music day we start out singing “The Explorer’s Creed.”“I am inquisitive, open minded, knowledgeable and caring. I will help to create, a better and more peaceful world. I am proud to be a Campus Inter-national School Explorer!”

We are hoping that each of our grades can sing for at least one of our upcoming celebrations. They are all doing a wonderful job, and our programs should be something extra special. Stay tuned! Mr. Locke, Vocal & General Music

Art- Ms. Mastran

Working on “Risk Taker” profile for their leaf formats to be displayed on a (3-D) Tree for our fall display.

Physical Education- Mr. Albright

Kindergarten: Kindergarten students will be starting their field trips over to the recreation center September 24th, due to their teacher in-service day. Kindergartners have started to work on tossing and catching different pieces of equipment on their own and choosing a partner. We have started with beanbags and are working our way up to different sizes of physical education balls.

First Grade: We will be heading over to the recreation center Friday, September 17th, from1-3pm for an orientation and levels of behavior meeting for our field trips. During P.E. class students finished up performing their loco-motor sequences and we have now moved on to learning how to properly run to a base in a t-ball, softball, or kickball type setting.

Second Grade: We will be heading over to the recreation center, Friday, September 17th from 1-3pm for an orientation and levels of behavior meeting for our field trips. Second grade students have been performing their loco-motor sequences and also transitioning their movements to non-verbal cues. Next week, second grade students will be starting their unit in flag football!

* A thank you to all parents/guardians who have sent in their permission slips and 5 dollars. It is appreciated and I know the students are looking forward to their first trip. If you have any ques-tions concerning the schedule, clothing, or volun-teering please don’t hesitate to contact me.
