Departments across HRH enjoy showing off their red spirit wear throughout February, decorating their spaces, and supporting this critically important effort to raise awareness about heart disease in our community. Throughout the month, HRH will be hosting screening opportunities for our fellow neighbors and community residents to learn their risks and take charge of their heart health. HRH has developed a strong legacy of community engagement since we opened our doors in 1962. In 2016 alone, over 300 associates volunteered more than 2,200 hours in community service through HRHVOLUNTEER.COM. Our community outreach program has continued to grow and expand, and has evolved into a newly branded initiative called Hendricks Cares. Marie Frazier, RN, BSN, was among the most active community volunteers from our entire organization last year. Marie, the Clinical Manager at Hibbeln Surgery Center, is a wonderful example of living our value of Engagement through Hendricks Cares. Marie has always had a passion for helping others. Her parents worked for the American Red Cross and instilled the importance of volunteering in their children. “My mom and dad taught us that if you have it to give, then give. You never know what someone else’s circumstances might be.” Marie says she has carried on the legacy of volunteerism in her three children, all of whom actively support nonprofit causes. Some of the organizations she enjoys working with include Habitat for Humanity, Master Gardeners of Hendricks County, Teddy Bear Tours, Kids’ Summer Lunch Bunch, Wheeler Mission, Sheltering Wings and HRH celebrations for families such as the Easter Bunny Event and the Children’s Christmas Party. Her search for opportunities never ceases. “I have a new lab puppy. We’re going through the training for Pet Therapy of America so that she can bring joy to patients as a therapy dog.” Recently, Marie saw volunteerism through a completely different lens. While her husband was working overseas in Afghanistan, she had been busy at work and volunteering and hadn’t had time to maintain her yard. A pipeline monitor professional happened to notice, and asked her if everything was alright. When he heard Marie’s story, he gathered a crew that weekend to help get her yard in shape. The experience strengthened Marie’s belief in the difference a volunteer can make in another person’s life. How to Get Involved with Hendricks Cares Hendricks Cares is a movement at HRH designed to engage our associates in community service. ENGAGEMENT WITH HENDRICKS CARES

HENDRICKS REGIONAL HEALTH GOES RED

Our associates embrace American Heart Month and the National Wear Red Day® campaign in support of the American Heart Association. Departments across HRH enjoy showing off their red spirit wear throughout February, decorating their spaces, and supporting this critically important eff ort to raise awareness about heart disease in our community.

Marie, the

Clinical Manager at Hibbeln Surgery Center, is a wonderful example of living our value of Engagement through Hendricks Cares.

Marie has always had a passion for helping others. Her parents worked for the American Red Cross and instilled the importance of volunteering in their children. “My mom and dad taught us that if you have it to give, then give. You never know what someone else’s circumstances might be.” Marie says she has carried on the legacy of volunteerism in her three children, all of whom actively support nonprofi t causes.

We’re going through the training for Pet Therapy of America so that she can bring joy to patients as a therapy dog.”

Recently, Marie saw volunteerism through a completely diff erent lens.

The experience strengthened Marie’s belief in the diff erence a volunteer can make in another person’s life.

Many great stories were shared as HRH recently celebrated Billie Hendricks’ retirement. Billie’s HRH career spanned almost 35 years. She promises to keep in touch with her HRH family, and is planning a cruise to celebrate her well-earned retirement!

We had a great time hosting first graders for our annual “Day at the Hospital.” Thank you to the associates who volunteered to help with the experience!

Mila’s not shy! HRH is a proud sponsor of Mila the orangutan and all Zoo Babies at the Indianapolis Zoo – because every day deserves this cuteness!

A wonderful honor recently put a group of HRH associates’ exemplification of the value of collaboration in the spotlight. HRH Director of Immediate Care Centers Marijane Smallwood received a Patriot Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. The ESGR works to foster relationships between guard members and civilian employers.

Marijane was nominated for the award by Sergeant First Class Matthew Spears, husband of HRH Radiation Technician Wendy Spears. The family is preparing for SFC Spears‘ upcoming deployment, and as parents of a young girl, they were concerned that Wendy’s 12-hour work days would not be conducive for single parenting. Wendy said “I was going to have to possibly consider switching jobs to be able to get the hours that were needed to care for our daughter.”

When Wendy mentioned her concerns to Marijane and asked if anything could be done, Marijane and the Avon Immediate Care Center team stepped up to accommodate the family’s needs and switched Wendy’s hours.

In his nomination, SFC Spears noted both Marijane and the team’s understanding and flexibility with his wife’s schedule during his training and upcoming deployment. Matthew wrote “Mrs. Smallwood’s actions,

along with other employees’ willingness to alter their schedules, allowed the company to offer my wife a schedule that will allow her to be home for my daughter in my absence. Words will never express my gratitude for her swift actions and the care and compassion of the other employees to my family. This has relieved a huge burden off my family to better handle the other challenges ahead in my absence.”

The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.

Indiana ESGR representative Clyde Stringer said, “Service members are protected under law when they are deployed, but their spouses are not. Hendricks Regional Health has gone above and beyond to take care of a service member’s spouse and we honor that commitment.”

Patriot Awards are typically awarded to individual supervisors. However, Marijane stresses that she received the honor on behalf of the entire team at the Avon Immediate Care Center. “This is something we try to do for all of our employees. We do things together as a team. We truly are an extended family.”
