Our Relationship: I t a l l s tar ted with a for tune cookie. . .

“A new relat ionship is about to blossom. You wi l l be blessed.”

After cracking open this for tune, Er in met René.. . that is where i t a l l s tarted. When they met at a coffee shop in Los Gatos, Er in was pret ty sure that i t would just be another cup of coffee with a nice guy, and that would be that. L i t t le did she know that René would be so interest ing and that they would “c l ick.” Af ter s i t t ing in some very uncomfortable wooden chairs for a few hours, they decided to grab a bi te to eat. This is where Er in got to hear about René’s dreams for the future. At the end of the night they made plans to see each other again. . .and things grew from there.

Erin: I was born and raised in the Bay Area, only leaving to at tend col lege at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I have always loved the coast and the mountains, so I am r ight at home in Cal i fornia. I am an only chi ld and have a real ly c lose rela-t ionship wi th my mom (Marge), dad (Frank), and Grandma (Bertha) who al l l ive in Campbel l .

Af ter at tending col lege and receiv ing my degree in Pol i t ical Science & Spanish, I returned to San Jose and earned both my teaching credent ia l and Master ’s De-gree from San Jose State. I work at the Campbel l Union School Distr ict as Li tera-cy Coach and the GATE Coordinator. I have always been ful f i l led by working with chi ldren in my own community and love what I do. In my free t ime I love travel ing (most recent ly v is i ted Denver and Palm Spr ings for the f i rst t ime), cooking for fami ly and fr iends, and staying act ive by running, cycl ing, and doing yoga.

René: I am or ig inal ly f rom Lima, Peru where I grew up with my mom (Lupe) and older s ister (Car la) . Dur ing my t ime at the universi ty where I was studying law, I got the opportuni ty to move to the United States. I f i rst went to New York where my grandparents l ived, then I made a home in Maryland. When my mother and sister came to Cal i fornia and I got the chance to v is i t them, I decided to make the move to Cal i fornia.

I came to Los Gatos to be closer to fami ly. I enjoy reading and keeping up on cur-rent events and pol i t ics bother here and in South America. I a lso love spending t ime with my nephews, Nicolas and Sant iago. I am an avid soccer fan and hope to be able to coach kids soccer somet ime soon. Since I am st i l l new to the area I am explor ing the s i tes. I just rode a cable car for the f i rst t ime and vis i ted Lombard Street and other at t ract ions in San Francisco.

Our Proposal:During this busy hol iday season, fu l l of Chr istmas part ies and other events, the last th ing I expected was for René to pop the quest ion. On the f i rst Saturday of hol iday vacat ion, af ter helping my fr iend pack for her move to Denver, at-tending a graduat ion party, and gett ing soaked by a winter storm, René met me at my place to get ready to at tend a f r iend’s hol iday party.

Whi le I was busy gett ing ready for the party, René hovered over me, and in an effor t to keep him occupied, I asked him to pick out one of the two outf i ts laying out for me. He kept te l l ing me that I needed to t ry one on and he couldn’ t just p ick one. After asking a few t imes, I gave up. When I walked into the bedroom to get dressed, I found an open r ing box on top of one of the outf i ts. Af ter standing and star ing in shock, I turned around and René asked me to marry him. I obviously said yes, though I couldn’ t te l l the wor ld qui te yet .

Since my parents didn’ t know the news, I had to go to the Chr istmas party that evening and leave my r ing at home. Once René had a chat wi th my dad and we broke the news to them, we got to share the happy news with the rest of our f r iends and fami ly.
