Ladies first – except when it comes to golf...
Dear Golfers
Wherever a certain degree of good manners and decorum reigns, the rule
is always “ladies first”. At first glance, therefore, it seems completely baff-
ling that this maxim does not apply in a sport that involves stricter rules
of etiquette than virtually any other. Decency, politeness, integrity, hu-
mility, fairness and being a good sport are all absolutely vital to celebrating
the cultivated sport of golf, so how on earth could the simple principle of
“ladies first” have been overlooked? Could it perhaps have something to
do with the rather misogynist mindset underlying the venerable British
institution of the gentlemen’s club? This theory is given further credence
if we consider that, even today, some traditional golf courses in the British
Isles (as well as some in the former British colonies) still have a discreet
but unambiguous sign reminding players that there are “No Women Allo-
wed”. Thankfully, of course, these are just a handful of exceptions to the
rule, the last bastions of a bygone age that continue to resist change of
any kind.
Take a closer look, and it becomes clear that “ladies first” would make no
sense on the golf course from a purely practical point of view as it would
drastically restrict women’s enjoyment of the game. The golfing industry,
with its many different fields of business – clothing, clubs, balls, acces-
sories and even tuition and travel – began to focus on women and their
needs some time ago. But is it not true that a woman plays the same as
a man? From the course manager’s perspective, there are in fact some
fundamental differences between the sexes. One example that immedia-
tely springs to mind is the fact that the speed of play (in terms of long
waiting times) hardly ever sparks a debate (making the waiting times even
longer) during a ladies-only tournament. To say that waiting times are
never an issue when all the competitors are male would be stretching the
truth somewhat. Some of you may be thinking that these are nothing
more than clichés. Maybe so…
In this latest edition of the Engadin Golf & Hotel Guide, professional player
Caroline Rominger, who grew up in Pontresina but is at home on the
world’s golf courses, tackles the gender question. The feminine touch and
the woman’s perspective can also be found elsewhere in the Guide. We
hope that this eighth edition can give fans of the sport some food for
thought and perhaps raise a smile – or even an eyebrow. Such reactions
and emotions would certainly underpin your sound knowledge of eti-
quette in any situation out on the golf course, regardless of gender.
I would like to wish you a fine summer of enjoyable golfing on the Engadin
courses.
Daniel Schaltegger
General Manager,
Engadin Golf
7In times gone by, golf was seen as an exclusively male sport. Golf clubs in
the UK were for men only and often had signs at the entrance to their
course proclaiming “No Dogs, No Women”. That was then, this is now.
Golfers have had to move with the times. These days, women can and in-
deed should play golf. But what is different about ladies’ golf? Are there
even perhaps ways in which it is better?
The first time I swung a club as a young girl in Engadin, I could not muster
a great deal of enthusiasm for it. Since many girls and boys my age prac-
tised the sport, however, I soon began to enjoy it. I think it is wonderful
that we women can now hold our own against the men. It is beneficial
for both sides – what other sport is there that would allow me to compare
myself directly with a man and even enter into a little competition out on
the course?
I finally decided to turn professional in 2009 and joined the European
Tour. In the beginning, it was a new and exciting world among all the
women. Many got on very well and became friends. Naturally, we take a
great interest in golfing fashions. Skirts, shorts, t-shirts, rain gear, wind
stoppers: all are available in a bewildering array of colours nowadays.
Skirts and shorts are worn as short as possible, whereas the rule used to
be that they must finish no more than a hand’s breadth above the knee.
Collarless t-shirts are now worn on the tours – sometimes even the sort
of tops I would normally reserve for the beach. Today’s fashion trends
know no bounds.
So what separates the men from the women in golf? Obviously, the men
hit the ball further than we do, but the fact that they also put more spin
on it means that their shots are frequently more curved. The big advantage
of this greater spin is that men can stop the ball faster and with more
control on the greens. The effect is of course highly pronounced on hard
greens, and our greens here in Engadin are quite hard, rather like those
of a links. At the same time, I think that the women have somewhat more
feeling with the ball. This comes into play over short distances, where
power is not the decisive factor. That said, I do believe that women at the
professional level play a very similar game to men at the amateur level.
When I play from the same tee as the amateur men at a pro-am tourna-

9ment, the distances we achieve with both drivers and irons are often com-
parable. Accuracy is another matter entirely, something that has to be
finely honed through lots of training – regardless of whether you are male
or female.
Do men play more aggressively than women? In my opinion, women do
tend to choose the defensive option, by which I mean that they are not
constantly on the attack. Unlike men, however, women rarely have the
opportunity, for example, to tackle a par five in two shots. I have been in
countless situations where “no risk, no fun” was the only way to go. The
more consistent a game becomes, the greater the benefits that can come
from taking risks. You might manage to land an eagle putt, which can
quickly make up for even a double bogey scored at an earlier hole as a
result of taking risks.
Besides this consistency, there are also differences in technique. All pro-
fessionals naturally work tirelessly on their technique because it is vital
for progressing. Sadly, I find all too often that amateurs allow mistakes to
creep in and rarely play with a pro, if at all. In pro-am competitions, the
pros can point out little things that will make a big difference and thus
help the amateurs to make immediate advances. Men – in my experience,
at least – are less concerned with technique as long as they can hit the
ball further than their friends...
Last but not least, I am repeatedly asked whether we train differently to
the men. Personally, I have not noticed any major differences. There are
individual aspects here and there, but on the whole I think that who trains
more than whom has nothing to do with gender. It is generally astound-
ing, though, to see how far some players get without putting much effort
into their training. What I think is important is the steadily growing trend
towards improved fitness. Strengthening your muscles can improve your
technique and above all prevent injuries. That is true for both genders
and particularly for amateurs – in short, for everyone who plays golf!

Carl F. Bucherer and has remained unchanged for
125 years: striving for the highest possible quality
while constantly pursuing innovation. In keeping
with this philosophy, Bucherer is treating its cus-
tomers to a collection of one-off jewellery pieces and
limited-edition watches from popular brands.
La Magie des Saisons (the Magic of the Seasons)Bucherer’s exquisite collection “La Magie des
Saisons” celebrates the company’s European roots.
The beautiful pieces, each one unique, were inspired
by the wide variety of local flora and fauna that can
be seen through the seasons. The jewellery was all de-
signed and crafted in-house. Goldsmiths, stonesetters, engravers
and polishers worked hand in hand to produce every piece, and the com-
pany’s own gemologists had begun the search for the right precious stones
well in advance. Thanks to long-standing business relationships with
trusted partners, Bucherer’s specialists were able to source some extremely
rare and highly sought-after stones. The resulting one-of-a-kind items
are the perfect expression of more than a century of master craftsmanship
and of Bucherer’s exacting quality standards.

We have almost 100 tournaments of all kinds scheduled for summer 2013.
They range from a relaxed but handicap-relevant nine-hole round at the
“Fiirabig” Friday matches to the oldest golf tournament in Switzerland,
the Engadine Amateur Championship, a classic played over 36 holes.
Printed copies of the complete tournament calendar can be obtained at
any time from Engadin Golf in Samedan. The calendar, together with fur-
ther information on the tournaments, can also be found at
www.engadin-golf.ch.
The following pages contain a selection intended to highlight the broad
spectrum of tournaments in store at our courses:
Golf Season 2013
The Highlights
17- The Engadine Amateur Championship – the oldest golf tournament in
Switzerland and a real classic for serious amateur golfers. Played in
strokeplay format over 36 holes, it is in a class of its own. Saturday/Sun-
day, 6/7 July 2013 in Samedan.
- The 46th Koller Cup – the oldest sponsored tournament in Samedan and
a firm fixture on our calendar. Witness three generations of the Koller
family joining forces in the fight for low scores. Saturday, 8 June 2013 in
Samedan.
- The Lyceum Alpinum Golf Open – well on the way to becoming a big
success story. No other tournament has as many winners, with both four
ball better ball and matchplay formats. How does that work? Come and
find out for yourself on Sunday, 30 June 2013 in Zuoz-Madulain.
- Enjoy choir rehearsals and songs from around the world in the evenings
with the Compagnia Rossini led by Armin Caduff. You can even join in if
you like. The days will be spent playing competitive golf on the Samedan
and Zuoz-Madulain courses. This is the Belcanto Week from Sunday to
Sunday, 16-23 June 2013.
- 10 years of golf in Zuoz-Madulain – how time flies! The 10th birthday
of our “youngster” will be a great golfing occasion not to be missed,
with lots happening both on and off the course and an interesting tour-
nament in the popular twosome scramble/Stableford format.
Saturday/Sunday, 13/14 July 2013 in Zuoz-Madulain, naturally.
- The President’s Early Birds Trophy – brand new for this year. On 1 Au-
gust, the President of the Engadine Golf Club will welcome players to
his very own tournament on the Swiss national holiday. We are keeping
the programme under wraps for now, but it is sure to be an exciting
day. One thing we will tell you is this: the early bird catches the worm.
Thursday, 1 August 2013 in Samedan.
- The Engadine Golf Club’s Club Match and Maestraunza – the social and
sporting highlights of the Club’s year. Saturday, 15 June (Club Match on
both courses at the same time), Saturday, 31 August and Sunday, 1 Sep-
tember 2013 in Samedan and then Zuoz-Madulain. May the best golfer
win!
- Swiss Generations Trophy – a family affair. Grandfather and grandson,
mother and daughter, all playing in a twosome scramble format. There
are many team combinations, but only one event in this superb national
family series held in Engadin. Sunday, 15 September 2013 in Zuoz-Madu-
lain.

The story started with the dream of a grand hotel up
in the mountains. But that was not enough for pi-
oneering Swiss hotelier Anton Bon, whose descen-
dants still own a majority stake in Suvretta House
today: he made his dream come true. He created a
majestic structure with unique architecture that fits
perfectly into the landscape and invariably enchants
guests with its relaxed but refined atmosphere and
timeless grandeur and elegance.
The first guests arriving in December 1912 were
amazed by the hotel’s unprecedented facilities. It
offered a level of luxury unequalled at the time with
250 rooms, 370 beds and 110 bathrooms as well as
bridge, billiards, smoking and tea rooms, a library,
a music room and spacious, impeccably decorated
function and dining rooms that connect to each
other. The inviting lobby with a spectacular view
over the surrounding forests and the Engadin
mountains remains the centrepiece and meeting
point of Suvretta House to this day.
To increase its appeal further and secure its position
as one of the leading luxury resorts in the Swiss Alps
for years to come, Suvretta House has developed a
forward-looking master plan.
The master plan includes additional rooms in the
main building, new suite and sport hotels and an
all-season sports school. The entire wellness and
spa area will also be remodelled, and future use of
geothermal and solar energy is being looked into
closely.
In a document he placed in the sphere atop the
hotel’s west tower, Anton Bon wrote: “I have with
perseverance and courage undertaken the founda-
tion of this hotel to provide a new occupation for
my sons in the hope that one or other of them
might make a name for himself in this way. If, as
we all hope, the new enterprise is a success, then
we have the concerted efforts and hard work of the
Bon family to thank for it. May God watch over this
building.” Bon’s great-great-grandchildren are
staying true to his philosophy and taking the hotel’s
fate into their own hands while never forgetting
that fostering and celebrating hospitality, unsur-
passed service and attention to detail must always
be their top priority.

38 Her swing is as precise as a Swiss watch, and she has an impressive collec-
tion of prestigious titles to her name: 85 professional tournament wins
around the world, including 10 majors. But we must refrain from listing all
of Annika Sörenstam’s unrivalled achievements as they would take up the
whole page! When it comes to golf tuition, the ever modest, blonde-haired
Swede has chosen to tread a different path to many of her illustrious inter-
national colleagues. Rather than expending a great deal of marketing effort
to sell her training philosophy via a franchising system, she founded her
own academy in Orlando, Florida. It comprises a hand-picked group of in-
structors, including her sister Charlotta, her fitness coach Kai Fusser and her
swing trainer Henri Reis, all of whom have in some way played a part in
her successful golfing career.
Engadin Golf is lucky enough to have been in partnership with the world’s
most successful contemporary professional since 2009, and this partnership
is exclusive throughout Europe. All those who have taken part in the ANNIKA
Academy clinics – many of them more than once – agree that modern golf
simply cannot be taught in a way that is kinder to the body. All found the
style of tuition fostered by the ANNIKA Academy’s team of instructors to be
highly straightforward and easy to follow. It appeals to all types of golfer
from single-handicap players to newcomers who have only just received
their green card.
ANNIKA Academy™
Exclusive to Engadin!
39So what can they expect from the ANNIKA Academy clinics? The three-day
courses with group lunches and course play make for an unforgettable ex-
perience and cover all elements of the game. Golf tuition is combined with
training sessions overseen by Annika Sörenstam’s long-standing fitness
coach Kai Fusser. His immense expertise in fitness, strength and endurance
training has added a new dimension to the golf clinics. There is no need to
be scared: you do not have to lift weights or hit the treadmill. Instead, Kai
Fusser clearly and simply demonstrates the relationship between fitness
and golf training, offering some helpful advice on how to improve your
swing with some carefully targeted exercises that are easy to reproduce.
Besides the high-quality golf clinics in Engadin, the collaboration with the
ANNIKA Academy also thrives on know-how transfer to the benefit of En-
gadin Golf’s own pros. They attend regular workshops that give them an
insight into the latest training and swing philosophies of their counterparts
in the US.
The programme for the fifth round of exclusive golf clinics this coming Au-
gust is already finalised – see the adjacent box, which also contains details
of a very special hotel deal. Bookings can be made directly through the Sec-
retariat in Zuoz-Madulain or in Samedan.

41Golf played in elegant period dress and with historically accurate imple-
ments returns to Switzerland’s oldest course, Engadin Golf Samedan, from
2 to 4 August as part of the Swiss Hickory Tour 2013. “There will of course
be another Hickory ProAm as well,” promises organiser Enrico Degiacomi
of Delicious Golf. The third Swiss Hickory Championship Days event will
once again turn Samedan into a meeting point for ladies and gents who
appreciate the finer things in life and wish to celebrate the spirit of the
great game. All the trophies will be handed out on the 18th green, with
the winning players using an antique club head to open their champa-
gne.
The first Swiss Hickory ProAm of the modern eraDelicious Golf organised the first Swiss Hickory Championship Days in St.
Moritz and Samedan in August 2011. They followed this up in summer 2012
with another premiere: on 18 August, Engadin Golf Samedan hosted the
first ever St. Moritz Swiss Hickory ProAm – the first such event in the mo-
dern era of hickory golf. For the amateurs, it was all about the honour and
excitement, whereas the pros were playing for prize money. Paolo Quirici
took victory among the pros with a 78. The Ticino-born golfer also came
out on top in the team competition, only just beating the team of local
heroes comprising our pro Martin Rominger together with amateurs Mar-
kus Rominger, Dumeng Clavuot and Daniel Schaltegger. The next day, Mar-
tin Rominger made sure that the trophy for the second Swiss Hickory
Championship remained in the valley. A round of 76 was enough for the
Engadin native, who plays on the Asian Tour and the Challenge Tour, to
take the title of Swiss Hickory Champion 2012. It will be a matter of honour
for him to defend this title on 4 August 2013.
“Golf had a lot to do with feeling in the early days”Paolo Quirici, a keen student of golf history, enthused about the hickory
event: “This ProAm is the first time I have played 18 holes with hickory
clubs. It made quite an impression and was a lot of fun. Hickory is the
historical side of the game, showcasing its heritage. Learning how golf
used to be played and what it meant back then is of great value to any
golfer. Today it is all about distance, but golf had a lot to do with feeling
in the early days. This place is perfect for hickory. The course itself and the
historical significance of Engadin Golf are the ideal fit for a hickory event.”

drafted The Rules of Hickory Golf for this revived form of the game, and
these will be used on the Swiss Hickory Tour 2013.

47As the oldest golf club in Switzerland, we attach a great deal of importance
to upholding traditions and preserving tried-and-tested ideas while re-
maining open to new ones. We want to keep our heritage alive. This in-
cludes proper conduct – not just on the course, but off it as well. We want
to maintain a cultivated approach to the sport in Engadin. The funda-
mental principle should always be that golf is a game to be enjoyed.
Our juniorsWe want to pass this enjoyment on to our juniors, too. Over the past two
years, we have given the training we provide for them a thorough over-
haul. More than 150 juniors – girls as well as boys – aged 8 to 18 attend
regular training sessions and rules tuition. We have also launched our own
season-long series of tournaments, the Royal Cup, which gives juniors at
all levels an opportunity to put what they have learned to the test at a
very early stage out on the course and in a competitive environment. Many
new juniors sign up each year, and not all of them have parents who play
golf themselves. We find this very encouraging because it shows that the
training we offer appeals to young golfers and is the ideal way to recruit
the next generation of members.
To ensure that our younger players remain loyal to the Club and continue
to practice their hobby during their studies, we have created a new “in-
termediates” category this year. Engadine Golf Club members who are
under 26 pay a reduced annual fee.
Our prosOur two golf pros Caroline and Martin Rominger are looking ahead to the
new season with a great deal of enthusiasm and a number of sporting
goals. They will once again bear the Engadine Golf Club colours at com-
petitions in Europe and Asia in 2013. We look forward to celebrating their
triumphs and of course to the chance to see them in person and get some
useful tips.
On the subject of tips from our pros, see our website at www.engadin-
golf.ch for some advice from the Romingers on how best to play the holes
at the Samedan and Zuoz-Madulain courses.

Zuoz-Madulain golf course openend on 13 july 2003
49
Our milestonesThe Zuoz-Madulain course was opened on 13 July 2003. This auspicious
date marked a significant milestone for the sport in Engadin. Ever since,
golfers have had a choice of two championship courses that meet the most
exacting standards within a few kilometres of each other. The Zuoz-Madu-
lain course hosted the Ladies’ Series B2 Swiss interclub championship in
2010, and we are delighted to feature as an official venue on the ASG cal-
endar again this year with the Men’s Series A4 Swiss interclub champi-
onship. We will be marking the course’s 10th birthday with a special
weekend of celebrations on 13 and 14 July 2013. Why not book your place
today? There are sure to be a few surprises.
Another milestone is coming up in 2018: 125 years of the Engadine Golf
Club. Founded 1893, it is the oldest golf club in Switzerland. It may still be
five years away, but an occasion like this casts a long shadow, so we are
already thinking about how we plan to mark it.
Our ClubThe Engadine Golf Club is not only Switzerland’s oldest club, it is also one
of the largest in the country with some 1,300 members. As if that was not
enough to be proud of, we also play at 1,700 metres above sea level in a
beautiful Alpine valley. Despite our relatively brief season, running from
May to October, we stage a large number of tournaments that allow many
guests to play against our members.
We cannot wait for the 2013 season to get started and hope it brings plenty
of successful rounds of golf.

golf tournaments – the Audi quattro Cup – in 2013. This large and popular
amateur golf event is more than just an exercise in sponsorship, it also
reflects our guiding principles of innovation and quality.
The Audi quattro Cup has made a name for itself from Argentina to Aus-
tralia, from Chile to China and from Spain to South Africa, evolving from a
good idea into the sport’s leading amateur series. The Cup enjoyed an es-
pecially successful season in 2012 as more than 90,000 people from 52
countries competed for a place in the world finals, which were held in
November in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Swiss finals of the Audi quattro Cup took place amid the breathtaking
Engadin scenery from 7 to 9 September 2012. A total of 21 qualified teams
battled for overall victory in a two-day tournament. Guillaume Ebener
(23.8 handicap) and David Klausener (31.4 handicap) had luck on their side
and bagged the coveted ticket to world finals in Cape Town. Audi brand
ambassadors Didier Cuche and Tanja Frieden were also in attendance,
mingling with the crowds and helping to bring a wonderful ambience to
the event as well as taking part in some very special competitions.

55Mildred Didrikson Zaharias was born June 26, 1914, and earned her nick-
name „Babe“ by hitting five homeruns in one childhood baseball game.
At the 1932 Olympics, she won medals in the hurdles, javelin throw and
high jump. By the 1940s, she was the greatest woman golfer of all time.
The Associated Press declared Babe Zaharias to be the "Woman Athlete of
the Half Century" in 1950.
Excelling in different SportsAt the age of fifteen, Babe was the high-scoring forward on the girls' bas-
ketball team at Beaumont Senior High School. She attracted the attention
of Melvin J. McCombs, coach of one of the best girls' basketball teams in
the nation. In February 1930, McCombs secured a job for her with the Em-
ployers Casualty Company of Dallas, and she was soon a star player on its
Golden Cyclones. She returned to Beaumont in June to graduate with her
high school class. The Golden Cyclones won the national championship
the next three years, and she was All-American forward for two of those
years.
Didrikson soon turned her attention to track and field. At the National
Women's AAU Track Meet in 1931, she won first place in eight events and
was second in a ninth. In 1932, with much more interest in the meet be-
cause of the approaching Olympics, she captured the championship, scor-
ing thirty points; the Illinois Women's Athletic Club, which entered a team
of twenty-two women, placed second with twenty-two points. Babe then
went to the Olympics. Women were allowed to enter only three events,
but she broke four world's records; she won the javelin throw, with 143
feet, 4 inches, and won the 80-meter hurdles, twice breaking the previous
world record (her best time was 11.7 seconds). She made a world record
high jump, but the jump was disallowed and she was awarded second
place.
Golf ChampionDidrikson began playing golf in 1931 or 1932. In 1932, in her eleventh game
of golf, she drove 260 yards from the first tee and played the second nine
in 43. She herself stated that she entered her first golf tournament in the
fall of 1934. Although she did not win, she captured the qualifying round
with a 77. In April 1935, in the Texas State Women's Championship, she
carded a birdie on the par-5 thirty-first hole, to win the tournament two-
up. In the summer of 1935 she was declared a professional because of an
unauthorized endorsement. She accepted the decision and for several

Sils-Maria is an unspoiled and peaceful mountain village, just 7 miles from

offers splendid views of sparkling lakes and majestic mountains. In many
ways, it is a living monument – but tempered by a preference for understated
comfort over pomp and splendour, an un-Swiss willingness to let you live as
you like, a genuine family orientation, and the very intense, if unobtrusive,
day-to-day involvement of the owners.

Families Dietrich and Kienberger
A family affair since 1908
57
years traveled about the country giving golf exhibitions. She also appeared
on the vaudeville circuit with a number of different acts. She was the only
woman on the Babe Didrikson All-American basketball team and played
a few games with the House of David baseball team. It was during these
years that she pitched an inning for the St. Louis Cardinals in an exhibition
game with the Philadelphia Athletics. She excelled at almost everything
she tried: when only sixteen she won a prize for a dress that she had
made, at the Texas State Fair; she could type eighty-six words a minute;
she could throw a baseball from deep center field to home plate – once a
throw of hers was measured at over 300 feet.
In January 1938, Didrikson met George Zaharias, a professional wrestler
often billed as „The Crying Greek from Cripple Creek“, at the Los Angeles
Open. She was attracted to this hulk of a man who could drive a golf ball
farther than she. On December 23, 1938, they were married. They had no
children. Urged by her husband, she applied for reinstatement as an am-
ateur golfer in 1941 and was reinstated in January 1943. Utilizing her
tremendous powers of concentration, her almost unlimited self-confi-
dence (She once wrote: „My main idea in any kind of competition always
has been to go out there and cut loose with everything I've got. I've never
been afraid to go up against anything. I've always had the confidence that
I was capable of winning out.“), and her patience, she began to take up
golf seriously. She would drive as many as 1,000 balls a day, take lessons
for five or six hours, and play until her hands were blistered and bleeding.
In 1947, Zaharias became the first American woman to win the British
Ladies' Amateur Championship, at Gullane, Scotland. On one hole she
stroked a drive so far that a spectator whispered, „She must be Superman's
sister.“ That August she announced that she was turning professional. For
the next six years she dominated women's golf.
Babe Didrikson Zaharias at the olympics
58 Against the menWhile Zaharias missed the cut in the first PGA Tour (men’s tour) event that
she attempted, she became more and more experienced so she made the
cut in every PGA Tour event she entered. In January 1945, Zaharias played
in three PGA tournaments. She qualified for the Los Angeles Open and
managed to make the two-day cut in the main tournament itself, making
her the first (and currently only) woman in history to make the cut in a
regular PGA Tour event. She continued her cut streak at the Phoenix Open,
where she shot 77-72-75-80, finishing in 33rd place. At the Tucson Open,
she qualified, passed the cut and finished the tournament tied for 42nd.
Unlike other female golfers competing in men's events, she got into the
Los Angeles and Tucson Opens through 36-hole qualifiers, as opposed to
a sponsor's exemption. In 1948, she became the first woman to attempt
to qualify for the U.S. Open, but her application was rejected by the USGA.
They stated that the event was intended to be open to men only.
LegacyZaharias had a cancer operation in April 1953, and it was feared she would
never be able to return to competition. Three and a half months later,
though, she played in competition. The next year she won the United
States Women's Open by twelve strokes. In 1955 she had a second cancer
59
operation. She died in Galveston, Texas. In the last months of her life she
and her husband established the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Fund to support
cancer clinics and treatment centers.
Zaharias was the greatest woman golfer of all time, the winner of seven-
teen successive golf tournaments in 1946-1947, and of eighty-two tour-
naments between 1933 and 1953. The Associated Press voted her "Woman
of the Year" in 1936, 1945, 1947, 1950, and 1954. In 1950 the AP acclaimed
her the "Woman Athlete of the Half Century." The skinny, shingle-headed
teenager, a shy and socially immature girl who could win at sports but
usually antagonized her fellow competitors, became a poised, well-
dressed, graceful, and popular champion, the darling of the galleries,
whose drives whistled down the fairways and whose comments won the
hearts of the spectators. Famous sports writer Paul Gallico paid perhaps
the finest tribute to her: "Much has been made of Babe Didrikson's natural
aptitude for sports, as well as her competitive spirit and indomitable will
to win. But not enough has been said about the patience and strength of
character expressed in her willingness to practice endlessly, and her recog-
nition that she could reach the top and stay there only by incessant hard
work."

61Beautyclinic Samedan brings a complete range ofmedical cosmetic services to Engadin, bridging thegap between conventional cosmetics and invasivecosmetic surgery. Its offering is primarily focused onenhancing the figure. Modern weight-loss conceptssuch as the HCG and Hollywood diets can be a swiftand effective means of reaching your target weight.Stubborn fat that remains after dieting can then beremoved using the latest ultrasound (Liposonix) orlow-temperature (Cryolipolysis) techniques. These aredrop-in treatments that use special equipment todeliver the desired result in a single session. Lipo-suction, where fat is removed, can be useful andeven necessary if the fat deposits are very large. Cut-ting-edge approaches allow us to do this with a localanaesthetic rather than a general one, so you canleave the clinic right after your treatment and be backat work the next day.
Beautyclinic Samedan also specialises in treating cel-lulite. The gold standard here is Endermologie or LPGmassage, a type of vacuum roller massage that hasbecome established as the number one therapyworldwide. Carboxytherapy and mesotherapy are alsooffered. These involve injecting carbon dioxide gas orenzyme mixtures under the cellulite to improve theflow of blood, make the skin more elastic and breakdown fat cells.
Cosmetic laser medicine is another service providedby Beautyclinic Samedan. The focus here is on trea-ting the face with a fractional CO2 laser (also knownas a Fraxel) as a means of permanent depilation. Thelaser can also be used to remove spider veins or tat-toos. In addition to the laser, the face can be treatedwith a combination of microdermabrasion, whichuses diamonds to improve the skin complexion, andthe Nimue cosmetics line, which contains productsideally suited to every skin type. As well as these fa-cial treatments, we also offer hand and foot care.
Beautyclinic Samedan is additionally equipped todeal with varicose veins. Both large and small onescan be treated with a laser under a local anaesthetic, removing the need for a hospital stay and enablingyou to return to work as normal the very next day.You will not even need to wear surgical stockings.Beautyclinic Samedan is proud to have as its Mana-ging Director Tamara Giovanoli, a skilled cosmeticsexpert who is well known in Engadin. Nature beckons and can be experienced on 580 kilometres of walking pathsthrough the mountains, 400 kilometres of mountain bike trails, out on thelakes with the wind in your hair, on our spectacular inline skating routes alongthe River Inn or up on horseback over the ample plain. Everything is laid outso as to protect the natural environment and ensure that both mountain bik-ers and hikers can enjoy the landscape in their own way, and the network isconstantly expanding, with some existing trails being upgraded to suit thebikers.
Those who prefer an easier route to the summit can once again take advantageof the “lifts included” hotel offer, which allows them to use 13 cable cars andfuniculars free of charge when staying for two nights or more. To complement its natural attractions, the regionwill be hosting the usual mix of top cultural and sporting events in 2013.
Engadin St. Moritz is a feast for the eyes. This is especially evident at the topof Muottas Muragl, the lookout point that gives a warm welcome to countlesswalkers. Up here, you can enjoy the most beautiful view over Upper Engadin, particularly in the autumn, when the larch woods turn into a sea of flame-red needles. Your holiday starts on the journey up with the Rhaetian Railway. Its nostalgic charm is so beguiling that it has been granted UNESCO World Her-itage status. The train ride takes you through an imposing mountain panoramathat has inspired hordes of poets and painters in the past and continues todo so today.

65The Beginnings of Organized Healthcare in theUpper EngadineIn 1895, Dr. O. Bernhard, the founder of heliother-
apy in the Upper Engadine, opened the first Upper
Engadine District Hospital, and as its first resident
doctor brought institutional healthcare to the
people of the region. Since then, development in
the health sector has been rapid and the hospital
in the Upper Engadine has kept pace with it.
Many visitors are amazed when they now take alook behind the scenes at the hospitalThe 24-hour emergency centre deals with both
special surgical and medical cases. The intensive
care unit is able at all times to competently treat
extremely complex cases. For some time now, the
Radiology Department in the Hospital has only
been using medical imaging (CT ) with a third of
the normal radiation dosage, but with the same
image quality which is highly beneficial for pa-
tients. The Radiology Department was presented
with the “Swiss Quality Award 2012”, in the cate-
gory of “Patient Safety”, for this innovation.
Upper Engadine Hospital now a highly modernfacility with university cooperationSince the beginning of 2012, Upper Engadine Hos-
pital has been providing orthopaedic treatment,
i.e. surgery of the musculoskeletal system, 24
hours a day, 365 days a year, in close cooperation
with Basel University Hospital. This means that
patients receive first-class university support in
these medical disciplines at the hospital, and in
a familiy atmosphere.
However, thanks to close cooperation with the
Grisons Cantonal Hospital and Zurich University
Hospital, Upper Engadine Hospital with its sub-
specialties has also acquired a leading role in
South Grisons that is recognised far beyond the
region’s borders.
"Center of Alpine Sports Biomechanics" at theUpper Engadine Hospital – research as an addi-tional mainstayThe successful collaboration between the Upper
Engadine Hospital and the Orthopedics Depart-
ment in the University Hospital in Basel is now
being extended into the area of research. The es-
tablishment of the "Center of Alpine Sport Biome-
chanics" (CASB) is intended to promote the Upper
Engadine sustainably as a forward-looking region
and to create long-term jobs. The excellent loca-
tion of the hospital in the Upper Engadine and the
expertise of the Basel institution are combining to
accomplish the work and achieve the objectives
of the CASB which are to analyze the patterns of
movement in Alpine sports, such as downhill and
cross-country skiing and trekking in the summer.
The research center is accommodated in the hos-
pital.
High quality demands in all areasThe maxim of Upper Engadine Hospital is “We take
care of you!” Quality and the maximum willing-
ness to serve are values to which the Hospital is
committed. This credo is practised daily with the
highest quality demands for patients and as a
challenge for every employee. The focus here is al-
ways on patients as people.

Right in the middle of the Corviglia region, renowned as a destination for bikersand hikers in the summer months and for skiers during the winter, there issomething else waiting to be discovered. A very special place welcomes guestsat the lofty altitude of 2,278 metres above sea level. The Chesa Marguns is anexclusive venue for undisturbed private parties with a rustic feel. The veryunassuming look of this two-storey structure in the St. Moritz mountains stemsfrom its original purpose: it used to be a chair lift station for skiers. Situatedclose to the Marguns restaurants, it features a lounge, fireplace, dining areaand veranda. Alpine touches such as deer antlers, mountain goat horns andpelts create an evocative rural atmosphere in rooms that are bathed in lightfrom candles and lanterns and furnished with generous quantities of wood.
Guests reach the Chesa via the six-seater Celerina-Marguns gondola, and it re-mains at their exclusive disposal for the whole evening. The path from thegondola station to this unique location is lit with torches, and a red carpet iseven laid out in winter. Staff based at Marguns can cater for up to 100 guestsin the Chesa. The lack of running water is only a minor challenge for the teamthat runs the Marguns restaurants. Every banquet is a feast of culinary delights.Whether you choose hearty favourites or fine cuisine, your guests’ tastebudsare in for a treat. The lower floor boasts plenty of space to dance the nightaway with a DJ or even live music. Sleep is not something you will think of uphere – that is what the hotels down the hill are for!

This statement may not sit well with some people, but it becomes more truewith every passing year. There were guests in the past who wanted a tall, handsome ski instructor with thighs like Engadin larch trunks, but these daysdemand for good female instructors is huge.
Many parents want a woman to give their offspring private lessons becausethey believe she will bring more sensitivity to the role and bond with a childbetter than a male instructor can. We can certainly understand this point ofview, but we still have a number of men at our ski school who could easilypersuade mothers otherwise. Many of our male guests also prefer to hit thepistes around our region with a female instructor, and the list of qualities theyare looking for goes on and on.
But male instructors have nothing to fear – their qualities are still appreciated, too. It is our view that there is an ideal instructor (male or female) for eachlearner and vice versa. It is the task of the school’s management to know itsstaff well and make the most of their abilities so that every single guest feelswell looked after and their expectations are not only met, but also exceededwherever possible.
SWISS SKISCHOOL ST.MORITZ
Ski schools have long been a women’s game!
71
Back to our ladies. There have been a lot of changes over the past few yearsin the internal training pool within Swiss Snowsports, the umbrella organisa-tion of Switzerland’s ski schools, as well as on the schools’ competitive side. The title of Swiss Snowsports Training Expert used to be very much the preserveof the men, but the current pool of 77 experts and class instructors now com-prises no fewer than 22 women. On the competitive side, i.e. formation eventsfeaturing instructors, the first ladies’ demo teams were laughed at not so longago. People said that women lack the drive and the courage to attempt riskyturn combinations. However, this claim is disproven year after year at the Swissformation championship. The women are not lacking in speed, power or skill, and they have become one of the true highlights of our events.
We have sent a ladies’ demo team from the Swiss Ski School St. Moritz to theSwiss championship for the past six years. They have made it onto the podiumfour times, three of these as Swiss champions in formation skiing.
You can see, then, that our opening statement was not so far-fetched. Ourladies hold their own in the competitive world of winter sports tuition on adaily basis. If you would like to meet one of our most requested female skiinstructors in person, why not seek out the latest newcomer on the Samedangolf course this summer? We are confident that you will be impressed.
