Introduction
Significance of the Study:
To have life is a blessing from God and having our natural resources is a gift from him.
Before the humans’ creations, God has even prepared for humans’ place to live in the beauty and
richness of nature for man to continue to live and enjoy life with nature(Salibay, 2008)
The English word ecology is taken from the Greek oikos, meaning house, and thus refers
to our immediate surroundings, or environment. (Ricklefs, 2007)Each ecological system
embodies different kinds of processes from organism to biosphere. Our natural resources is taken
into two types in their category-the renewable which are resources that are placed by natural
processes or essentially inexhaustible in their uses; and the non-renewable resources like the
ores, fossils, and minerals do serve equal importance for the continuity of mankind and other life
forms(Ricklefs, 2007).With this, Hesser (2000) stated that most youth, especially the students
enjoy their study about earth science particular of some environmental issues because they are
curious about the world around them and the planet on which they live. But when our ecology
becomes not balance, some of our natural resources become a history of tomorrow, innovated,
simply do not exist for today’s generation (Emmons, 1997).

As population continue to increase, the use and consumption of our natural resources
continue to increase geometrically too. It is the fact that people continue to use and enjoy the
riches of their natural resources yet many do nothing to replace their consumption thus impairing
the capacity of people’s environments’ natural resources (Avila, 2006). This is the ironic
scenario.
The shrinking capacity of the Earths’ natural resources may soon the single most
important issue confronting humanity because of the pursuit of industrialization and human
activities. Worldwatch Institute said:
These changes have coincided with an apparent loss of political momentum on environment issues that
governments and the schools demonstrated in recent global warming talks collapsed(Stress, 2002)
Government officials as well as the youth leaders, the schools, different organizations, and all
human races should be concerned that many global ecosystems are in danger[example of this is that
one-quarter of the coral reefs in the world’s tropical oceans were sick or dying (Stress, 2002)].
God is raising a new generation who will participate over his creatures and willing to be
used by God in advancing and expanding his kingdom (Villanueve, 1999) for human beings are
given a certain dominion over all creatures. The holy scriptures declare: “You have made
man/woman lord over the work of your hands, set all things under their feet” (Ps.8:6). God says:
“Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and conquer it” (Gen 1:28). It can rightly be said that all
things were created in the service and use of human beings(Salibay, 2008).
With this, the significance of this study is to achieve its objective about the involvement
of youth leader in nation building, and in nature. To enable youth leaders, particularly in Cavite
whether it is inside or outside the campus, to reach out to the needs of our mother nature into a
simplest way. Has been designed to support the value growth of individuals and groups in
conserving, preserving, and maintaining our ecological balance in different ways
Lastly, the researcher aims to prove that at the heart of each youth leaders is
transformation. The youth leaders outside the campus such as the SK’s or the Sangguniang
Kabataan, the service team at GK (Gawad Kalinga) or different NGO’s youth leaders, and the in-
campus organization under the CSO-RSO, CSC’s, SCE, and Auxiliary groups become agents of
change and bearers of hope here in Cavite towards the whole world. This journey of
transformation ultimately points people towards building a nation of believers who are of one
heart and one mind who would share their resources to care for our nature and each other so may
the ecology may soon be balance. Now more than ever, the youth should realize that the power
to determine the future of this country is in their hands (Malipot, 2009) for them to become an
improve youth leaders, moreover as a citizen.
Review of Literature:
As the study came to exist the researchers found out that there were lots of filipino youth
leaders who were involved in environmental activities in many parts of the globe.
One of this is in the biennial Tunza International Youth Conference which is all about
UNEP’s global youth forum that brings together young environmentalists, ages15 to 24, from all
over the world to share experiences on the environment (the word “Tunza” means to treat with care or
affection in Kiswahili, a sub-regional language in Eastern Africa). One who attended this forum may not ring a
bell in his country but mention Reinier Tinapay among the 180 participants who attended at the
said event in Leverkusen, Germany. He is a 24 year old from Davao City who ably led in United
Nations Environment Program-initiated gathering and a leader used to head the watershed
Management Youth Council in Davao City. At the article of Buban(2007), Tinapay said that “We
expect that whatever we learn from this weeklong conference, all of us will return to our respective communities and
become beacons of activities as well as motivators for many others to play a part in addressing environmental
challenges,” Tinapay year’s conference focus is climate protection, regenerative energies and
modern technologies for environmental protection. Tinapay suggested that while technological
and industrial processes are the usual sources of environmental damage; why not also use
modern technology in solving our environmental problems? Indeed this cooperation is important
since everybody should be involved in the area of environmental protection and at the same time
ensuring that the voice of the youth is also heard in political debates. (Buban, 2007)
Another example of youth involvement to nature that makes the US impressed was with
Hanna Esguerra, 20 years of age who has been behind the mangrove rehabilitation of AngPulo
and a former chair of the Sangguniang Kabataan for Quilitisan, had lobbied with her barangay
council to turn AngPulo into an ecological park studded with mangroves. The islet was then
named AngPulo Mangrove Conservation Park and was declared a marine-protected area in
December 2009.Since the project began, the islet is all about mangrove tree-planting activities
and youth camps that espouse environmental preservation. It was also great to see the
participants snorkelling, learning about corals and species, and planting trees(Querubin, 2011).
Although some of our youth leaders was been recognized by different countries, the
youth can be a spark within themselves. There came a study conducted about the involvement of
youth leaders about environmental issues and activities. Arnold (2009) conducted interview research
with young environmental leaders to discover the past influences that they perceive have
contributed to their current involvement in environmental action. In all, 12 young people
participated in semi structured, in depth interviews. They met clear criteria including positive
environmental attitudes, behavior, initiatives, and involvement in multiple spheres of action. The
main self-identified influences on their environmental action were parents, experiences outdoors
in childhood, friends, role models, teachers and youth groups and conference or gatherings.
These results build on and extend previous research on significant life experiences of adult
environmentalist and also deepen the understanding of the nature and combination of these
influences with young people (Arnold, 2009)
As Buban(2007) stated that although its long-term goal is to encourage the youth to make a
difference in their communities, the youth leaders and young environmentalist should Act
locally but to think globally ,not to think just to their organization but to the whole communities
thinking that they are still their responsibility and beneficiaries (Dodos, 2010). The results of the presents
study may lead to some sociologist believed that the younger generation plays a key role in
sustainable development on our planet and those who are active in environmental protection
today could become the decision-makers of tomorrow. (Buban, 2007). As Querubin (2011) stated
that to have an advocacy of green tourism and also for the all-out community participation in regards
to environmental awareness.
Emmons (1997) defined positive environmental action as “a deliberate strategy that involves
decisions, planning, implementation, and reflection in order to achieve a specific positive environmental
outcome. Arnold(2009) concluded that young generations, are considered as the agents of hope for
the country. A generation who should really do its roles as supporters and helpers in the
development of Physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and above all the spiritual aspects of
every citizen(Arnold, 2009).
As the research proposal is in process, the researcher found out that there are several
youth organizations, implementing different environmental activities.
Since DLSU-D one of his vision is to participate meaningfully in the process of social
transformation by forming God-centered , people-oriented, and patriotic persons who serve as
responsible and professionally competent stewards of God’s Creation. All organizations at
DLSU-D is involve in different environmental activities as part of their outreach activity.
Ruffino (2009) stated on his article that the newly-elected university student council at DLSU-D
already have its vision on what to bring into line. The council plans on coordinating their
activities with the five-point Lasalian youth agenda on Education, governance, environment,
youth involvement and Lasalian formation. As Ilas(2011) said that USC at DLSU-D are not only
known as events- maker but as transformer of life. Ilas (2011) added that being an adviser in the
council of student organization, its major goal is to unite all student organization through student
activities particularly in education, health, spiritual, and environmental activities.
On the other hand the non-government organization and the SK’s manage their time of
implementing different environmental activities in corresponds to the needs of their community
and for the progress of the entire society.
Therefore, this research proposal is an instrument to study, to determine, to analyze, and
to evaluate, or to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of each youth leaders particularly in
Cavite, who are currently, involve on different organizations whether it is inside or outside the
campus. As the researcher look out to the different studies and researches, the researcher can
now make used the study of the youth leaders who are involved in different environmental
activities in Cavite, as a sampling of the youth leaders who are involve in different
environmental activities in the Philippines and as a pioneer in conducting this kind of research
here at DLSU-D.
Objectives of the Study
This research proposal entitled KALIKASAN (KAbataang LIder KAisa sa KalikaSAN)
In Cavite generally aims to analyze the involvement of youth leader in corresponds to their
organizations regarding to the environmental issues and to our ecological balance. Specifically, it
seeks to 1) identify and examine the factors that influence and affect them in making up some
project regarding to public’s enjoyment of natural resources. 2) Test and analyze the most
commonly used by the youth leaders in conserving our natural resources and maintain our
ecological balance. 3) Determine and develop the youth’s strategy in having some environmental
project more effective and more efficient for the betterment of our environment economically (of
less in expense).
This research proposal aims to promote camaraderie among youth leaders with the same
goal in saving our environment as well as the researcher through extending their efforts inside or
even outside the university. Also, the researcher aims to practice the University core value of
communion which means of providing service to the nation and to our nature.
All this is made possible by a faith-life characterized by a deep and passionate love for
God and neighbor particularly to the researcher’s target population for an easy and accurate
output. The concrete manifestation of this, is a life dedicated to caring and sharing so that faith,
hope, and love is increased where it is most lacking. This is the life of a brother’s keeper and as
God’s steward in nature and communities.
Time and Place of Study
The study will be conducted on the second semester of 2011-2012. The first draft will be
submitted on August 3, 2011 and the final submission of this research proposal will be on
August 5, 2011. The study is from July 21, 2011 - September 5, 2011 in the Student
Development and Activities Office (SDAO) under the Office of Student Services (OSS), the
Council of Student Organizations (CSO) with some of the 45 Recognized student organizations
(RSO). The University Student Council (USC) including of some 8 College Student Councils
(CSC) particularly in the college of Business Administration; the Student Commission on
Election (SCE), De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, Cavite and some barangays having a
Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) namely in Brgy. Sta. Fe, Dasmarinas, Cavite, Brgy. San Francisco,
and other barangay that the researcher in accordance of the SK’s approval; different non-
government organizations and different organizations of different university here at Cavite.
Methodology
The research design to be used for this study will be a combination of a two-wave survey,
content analysis and method testing. A ½ -page survey questionnaire in English, with questions
based upon the objectives of the study, will be distributed in accordance of our sampling.
Sampling is the process of selecting units, like people, organizations, or objects from a
population of interest in order to study and fairly generalize the results back to the population
from which the sample was chosen. The advantage of using sampling is to reduce the cost,
greater speed, greater scope, and it is greater accuracy in which it is based upon the researcher’s
objective (Reyes-Zamora & Ladao-Saren, 2008).
In sampling there are lots of methods that can be used but with this research proposal the
best method in sampling that can be used is the systematic random sampling. Systematic random
sampling with a random start is a method of selecting a sample by taking every k th unit from an
ordered population, the first unit being selected at random. The k is called the sampling interval
and the reciprocal 1/k is the sampling fraction (Reyes-Zamora & Ladao-Saren, 2008).The
interval serves as the constant difference between two consecutive numbers in the progression.
The contents of our survey are divided into five parts: 1) interest and influence
assessment, 2) dominance of environmental activities determination, 3) leadership skills
assessment, 4) training developmental skills analysis, 5) recommendation and suggestion
evaluation. This will gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of the environmental projects
implementation. The questionnaire will undergo pre-testing before it is finalized. There will be
also an interview schedule for president of the university student council in DLSU-D before the
survey is conducted. While the survey from the different officers in different organization
outside or inside the school the session will be recorded for content analysis. Hereafter the
effectiveness and efficiency of the organizations implemented environmental projects will be
formulated based on the survey results and content analysis that will undergo
testing/experimentation during the second wave of the survey.
The research will be conducted at LCDC (Lasalian Community Development Center)
who is responsible for every outreach activity of different organizations inside DLSU-D and part
of this is the activity of building up the nation and the nature outside the university (DLSU-D).
The Environmental Resource Management Center & Campus Development Center (ERMAC) in
having a lot of wisdom regarding environments natural resources and still responsible to every
activities regarding the natural resources inside or outside the campus named DLSU-D. The
campus main library particularly in the social sciences on the second floor; And the archives or
the thesis section on the third floor of the said library.
The officers in different organizations inside DLSU-D particularly the presidents,
different organizations outside DLSU-D specially in GK (Gawad Kalinga) youth service team
and some SK (Sangguniang Kabataan) officers under the used of Systematic random sampling
which is randomly selected at first, and systematically selected with the sampling interval will be
the main respondents of the study. The organization chosen in accordance to the systematic
random sampling are as follows:
The Systematic Random Sampling
Formula: N/n or 1/kth
1. ABSSOC 9. HRMS 17. COSA 25. FS 33. Outsiders 41. COSSC2. BOMS 10. TLS 20. PATRIOTS 26. FL 34. VOX 42. CIHMSC3. YFC 11. DPS 19. LIFTERS 27. GENSHIKEN 35. JFINEX 43. CBASC4. JMA 12. PLS 20. OAS 28. CEATSC 36. CPM 44. SBL5. JPMAP 13. DPMS 21. PUFC 29. LIFEBOX 37. UPCG 45. VB6.JPAMA 14. LCS 22. SHIDOKAN 30. Marche Societe 38. SERVE7. JPIA 15. ORSP 23. SIFE 31.MAO 39. SIFE8. SK's 16. CCJE-CSTAG 24. FLUX 32. Silvertongue 40.CLASC
Since the systematic random sampling is randomly selected at first. The researcher preferred to select the
organization SERVE. Using the formula k = { N/n or 1/kth } the researcher can now able to determine the constant
difference between two consecutive numbers in the progression or the interval. Since our population is 45
and approximately the researcher need 9 organizations for the research. Therefore the solution will become
N/n = 45/9 = 5. Thus our kth is 5. Therefore the respondents will be the officer starting randomly at SERVE with the kth
is 5 are the following {SERVE, CBASC, YFC, SK’s, DPMS, Patriots, SIFE, CEATSC, Outsiders (youth
organizations outside DLSU-D)}.
Since one of the researcher’s respondents came from outside of DLSU-D one method of
sampling that he can use is what we called the snowball sampling. It is the process starts by identifying
someone who meets the criteria for inclusion in the study. The respondent is then asked to recommend
others whom they may know who also meet the criteria. For the researcher, snowball is the best method and
very useful when populations are inaccessible or when the target population is very hard to find.
The selection of the organizations will be randomly but still systematically so as to attain
diversity and for the researcher not to be bias to different organization whether it is inside the
campus under the classifications abovementioned and must be a recognized organization in
DLSU-D under the office of the Student Services (OSS); or outside the organization under the
classifications abovementioned and must be recognizes by the government of the Philippines in
accordance to the Article 2 section 20 about the non-government organization and the provisions
for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) as part to the Article 2 Section 13 in youth vital role in
nation building(De Leon, 2007).
The interviews and the surveys will be personally conducted by the researcher. Before the
researcher conducts the surveys, there will be an interview schedule with the organizations
selected. To gather data from the organizations, the researcher will make use of an interview
guide which contains the following:
a) What are the factors that influence them in making some environmental activities
b) Commonly used environmental activities and the title of the said activity
c) Strategies for being a good leader
d) The most dominance activity in environmental projects
e) The utilization, evaluation, and implementation of environmental projects
The interview will be used an open and closed question. An open question allows a free
response and a closed question allows only a fixed response in order to measure what is lacking
on the given fixed measure and how the youth leader is knowledgeable in answering about
environmental activities and issues. To measure their active involvement and response by means
of implementing projects of different environmental activities.
The first wave of the survey will be conducted approximately on the fourth week of July,
the usual time after the process of plenty letters and signatories that a researcher should do before
having its interview and survey to the different organizations outside or inside the campus
(DLSU-D) as legitimate organizations and a manner of respect to their organization. The second-
wage of research will be conducted on the second week of August after the analysis and
interpretation of the filled up survey forms or a second wave of determination. The data collected
will be categorized and tabulated through counts and percentages in the form of graphs, FDT
(Frequency Distribution Table) for organizations and ease of use of the researcher. A
professional statistician will be consulted during her free consultation hours as part of the
advantage of the researcher in currently taking up a statistic subject (MGN 122a) to teach and
guide the researcher to tabulate the data to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of the data
synthesized. The content analysis will also be conducted while one of the environmental
activities is enacted. The session will be recorded in a form of pictures in Appendix E (Photo
Documentation) as a proof that they are implementing these environmental projects. The method
which has been finalized will be carried out simultaneously with the second wave of survey, so
as to test if the said implemented projects can be improved. After the second wave of survey, the
same process will happen categorization, tabulation, and analysis. A final method for the
effectiveness and efficiency of Cavite’s youth leaders’ involvement in environmental activities
will be formulated and finalized. All this is made possible by a faith-life characterized by a deep
and passionate love for God and neighbour particularly to the researcher’s target population for
an easy and accurate output.
