Principal’s Report

Staff leaving

As with any year, there will be changes in staffing for 2018. The new staff will be announced, with the details of class allocation, next Thursday in the Newsletter. Students will spend a session in their 2018 class with their new teacher on Friday December 15th. This day will also have the student reports for semester 2 made available on Compass.

I will write further details in the last week of school regarding the significant contribution of these 2 staff who will not be returning in 2018:

Leonie Proudfoot has been our Business Manager for 19 years

and is retiring at the end of the year. She is looking forward to a

well-deserved slower pace of life.

Andrew den Elzen has been with us for 7 years and has been a

leading teacher with us for a number of years. He has been

successfully appointed to the role of Assistant Principal at

Burwood East PS.

Christmas Carols

We are all looking forward to the Christmas Carols next Wednesday evening, commencing promptly at 7pm on the main oval, with students arriving at 6.45pm. A reminder that you can only guarantee food on the night if it is pre-ordered. Food safes stop when the Carols commence. Further details regarding what students are to wear are in the Music News section. All students need to sit in their class groups throughout the night and will be collected by parents at the end of festivities.

Our students have again been learning about audience etiquette throughout this year and have responded with appropriate behaviours. Can I remind parents that this is a night to focus on the students and the items they have been rehearsing to perform for the school community.

students’ performance seem to distract parents from fully participating and appreciating their efforts. We look forward to a wonderful evening. The forecast is looking positive at this stage.

the focus must be on the Korea Study Tour 2018 As parents who have been with the school over time will be aware, our school enjoys a deep and long-term relationship with South Korea. We have two Sister Schools who have visited us recently, one earlier this year. Since the mid-2000s we have regularly taken groups of senior students on Study Tours. In 2018 we will undertake our 8th tour, meaning that more than 100 CHPS students will have shared in this outstanding experience. We are planning to take our 2018 group in early Term 4, October 2018. The tour will be available to students in Years 5 & 6. More information will come out early next year. While it will not be for all senior students or families, all the students who have undertaken the trip in the past have found it an amazing experience. We are planning to visit our friends in Yeosu and Incheon, who have visited us in recent years.

2018 Preps Our new Preps are all ready to start in 2018, after their final Transition session and meeting their new teachers last Friday. There are 102 students starting next year, more than half from new families to the school, and they are all looking forward to becoming part of CHPS.

2018 Parent Contributions Letters went home last week via Compass, detailing costs and payment options for 2018 Parent Contributions. We are happy to be able to keep costs as low as possible: $135.00 student requisites and $135.00 in Voluntary Contribution. These funds support the high quality facilities and resources which our students use daily and access to Mia, our Student Welfare Officer, whose position is entirely school-funded. We understand the constant financial pressure involved in raising children in today’s world. Our ability to keep costs to a minimum, while providing the quality education we all expect, is based on each family paying their share. $270.00 equates to just $6.75 per school week (just a little more than a take away coffee). We know that this is very low compared to many schools. For this, each child is nurtured in a safe environment for 6.5 hours per day by a team of passionate, skilled and caring staff members. Each child is taught how to master the basic life-skills of literacy and numeracy, has exposure to art, music, sport, science and language and access to the highest-quality support in building and maintaining social relationships and responsibility. I hope you would agree that this is extraordinary value for money and I encourage you to commit to paying your contribution next year. The Voluntary Contribution component can be paid in two instalments (please see Compass) or alternative arrangements can be made by contacting the office. Families experiencing genuine financial hardship are invited to contact us directly.

CHAPS Morning Tea Our thanks to our Parents’ Association CHAPS, who this morning hosted a sumptuous morning tea for staff, in recognition of their hard work during this very busy year. CHAPS supports our school in many ways throughout the year and their fundraising efforts provide many enhancements to facilities and resources, that are valued by staff and students and the envy of other schools in the area. On behalf of all staff, may I thank our Parents’ Association for their continued support. CHAPS is a great way to become involved in your child’s education and contribute to our school community and I urge parents to ‘throw in their hat’ and join up. We are rapidly approaching the end of the school year, with a little over 2 weeks to go. There are a number of events which come up at this time of the year, so please stay on top of Compass and our Newsletter for all the fun happenings. MUSIC NEWS Christmas Carols on the Oval – will begin at 7pm on Wednesday December 13th.

In the event of rain, we will make a decision about cancellation as late in the school day as possible and will notify students by a PA message at dismissal and a posting on Compass and Facebook for parents. If

weather is uncertain please send students in costume, with a waterproof jacket over the top and a plastic bag to sit on.

At 6:45pm all students are to go to sit with their class and teacher and are to remain there for the duration of the concert. Parents, please sit in the audience area. The students have

all been practising their audience etiquette – sitting quietly and listening respectfully – and this is very much what the

Carols Night is about. We hope parents will set a good example for their children in this matter.

Wednesday 13th December – Carols concert on the oval, arrive by 6:45pm for a 7pm start Thursday the 21st of December – Student will arrive at school at 8am for their last rehearsal, then head to Croydon Centro Shopping Centre on the bus for their performance at 9:30am. This is followed by the movie

“Ferdinand” at Croydon Cinemas. We will return to school by lunchtime. Consent and payment is on Compass.

Uniform News LET’S GET RAGTAGD! The uniform shop is excited to announce that we have introduced Ragtagd, a young start-up company that helps parents find lost property at school. Finally a way to get on top of that mound of jumpers and jackets! Here’s how it works: Whenever your Smart Tagged garment reaches lost property, you will receive an automated SMS (text message) notifying you that it’s there, making retrieval quick and easy. In fact, collection is so simple that 90% of families using RagTagd at other schools get their lost property within a day of receiving an SMS. As part of our initial trial, we have a limited amount of tags available at the Uniform Shop that we can hand out. Once these have gone, future windcheaters, bomber jackets and polar fleece jackets will come already fitted with these tags.

The Yarra Valley Railway will be running extra services during the school

holidays providing a great day out. Our heritage Walker RM22 departs

Healesville Railway Station on the hour between 10am and 4pm for the trip to

Tunnel Hill and return on the following days:
