ENERGY STAR Meeting – June 4, 2008Steve Hopwood
Office of Energy Efficiency
Program Status
• Manufacturers: 240
• Dealer Locations: 175
• Trade Allies: 5
• Over 111,000 product models listed in database, consisting of:– 80% window models
– 12% swinging door, sidelite, transom models
– 7% sliding glass door models
– 1% skylight models
Program Successes
• Part of ECOenergy Retrofit Program• Part of ENERGY STAR for New Homes • Used as a basis for a number of provincial and
utility market transformation programs• Levels used for building code and regulation
initiatives:– Ontario – Maximum U 2.00 or Minimum ER 17 – Part 9 windows
and sliding glass doors – British Columbia – 2009 – Maximum U 2.00 for Part 9 windows and
doors (solid wood doors maybe exempted) and a minimum value for unit skylights TBD
– Quebec and Ontario considering a regulation as well
How to Apply
• If products are certified for thermal performance and tested for air-tightness – contact NRCan – ask for an application kit
• Complete and sign an agreement• Register your product models• If no products are certified then contact one of
the listed certification agencies (CSA, QAI, Intertek, NFRC)
• If not tested for air-tightness – contact certification agency or an accredited test laboratory
Technical Specification Currently Under Review
What prompted this review? • Canadian market shifting towards more energy efficient
fenestration products - need to maintain ENERGY STAR as a premium symbol of energy efficiency.
• Ontario mandated current Zone A levels. B.C. will do the same in 2009.
• Concerns expressed over the inclusion of very low solar gain products.
• Requests from door industry to have separate levels for doors based on amount of glazing.
• U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is seriously considering making the U.S. ENERGY STAR program more stringent.
Changes Under Consideration At This Time
• More stringent levels for each zone for all products – possibly introduced in two phases
• New separate level table for doors – levels would vary based on the amount of glazing
• Introduce a minimum solar gain requirement• Full structural certification for all products to
AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440• IGMA/IGMAC/IGCC IG Unit certification• Introduce a minimum air tightness requirement for swinging
doors and skylights – make current air tightness requirement for windows and sliding glass doors more stringent
• NO zone boundary changes are being considered at this time.

Labelling Guidelines Also Under Review
• NRCan is also conducting a review of the labelling guidelines for ENERGY STAR.
• Possibilities:– Require use of certification agency’s labels.
– Require use of ENERGY STAR Fenestration Qualification Label (FQL).
– Expand current FQL to include specific ratings and other information.
Thank-you
