What has been achieved in the UNIDO Program

Vietnamese Food Company reduced their natural

gas consumption by 12% in the first year of

implementing an EnMS.

Philippines steel company improved energy

performance of its furnace by 5% by simple

operational control measures.

Indonesian paper company improved overall energy

performance in the first 6 months by 7%. Focusing at

low cost measures. Overall Payback 0.5 year

Thailand steel company saved 11GWh of fuel by

changing process set points. The savings paid for a

plant upgrade which delivered a further 23 GWh of

savings with a simple payback of 7 months

What is the process of EnMS? It Works Using Six Key Concepts

1. Commitment

Roles and Responsibilities

2. Significant Energy Users (SEUs)

3. Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs)

4. Opportunities List

5. Operational Control

6. Review

Structured Approach (EnMS system)

Based on improvement in energy intensity.

What does EnMS offer to industries, consumers and users?

Reduced operating costs

Reduced exposure to rising energy costs

Improved reliability and productivity

Reduced environmental impact

Improved corporate image

Alignment with ISO 50001

Initially based on low cost

improvements

What sort of actions will we take?

Operation and maintenance initially

• Fix leaks

• Fix insulation

• Switch off

• Run optimum equipment

• Optimum settings

• Check controls

• Training

• Maintain improvements

Component v System Approach

Component approach involves

• segregating components and analyzing in isolation

• possibly as a result of education by particular technology sales engineer, e.g. variable speed drive, steam trap, etc.

System approach involves

• looking at how the whole group functions together

• how one change can impact on system performance

• Requires more knowledge of the system and its interactions

2 to 5 % efficiency gains for individual components versus

15 to 30% potential efficiency gains through system optimization
