    BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Food is a source of energy.

Energy is stored in the chemical bonds of carbohydrates, fats, andproteins in food.

The energy value of food is defined as the energy produced when1 gram of food is completely burned.

    Unit: (J/g) or (kJ/g).

When the food is burned, it releases most of its energy in the formof heat.

Energy value can be calculated by the following formula:

    Energy value = mass of water (g) x temperature rise (C) x 4.2 J/g C

    mass of food (g)

    ENGAGE

Figure above show 3 types of nuts. Rank the nuts accordingly in

ascending order energy level. Explain your answer.

    .

    Answer:

    Cashew nutalmondgroundnut

Cashew nut has lower energy compared to almond and groundnut. While

groundnut has the highest energy value, because it is rich in protein

compared to others. Thus, it will provide more energy.

    1) Based on your result, state your observations ontemperature reading during burning of food

    sample?

    2) Based on your calculation, which food sample has

    the highest energy? Explain why?

    3) What is the name of the process in living organisms

    that released energy from food?

    4) Write a word equation for this reaction. Is it thesame as the reaction used in the investigation?

    Explain your answer?

    5) What do living organisms do with the energy

    released from their food?

    Answers1) Observations:

    i. Temperature increases.

ii. The temperature of groundnut is changes from 23.1 O C to 43.1O C,

for cashew nut, changes from 24.5O C to 86.1O C and for almond,

    changes from 23.1 O C to 74.0O C .

    2) Groundnut because they rich in protein and fat compared to other food

samples that provide higher energy value.

    3) The process in living organisms that release energy from food is called

    respiration.

    4) Carbohydrate + oxygencarbon dioxide + water

It is essentially the same reaction as that in the investigation, becauseboth reactions use oxygen and produce carbon dioxide.

    5) Living organisms used the energy released from their food to make new

body tissues (growth and repair) and movement. Some of energy is

transfer to their surroundings as heat.

    ENHANCE

A student has decided to climb Gunung Jerai organized by his

school. This student only allowed to bring a type of food either

energy bar or instant noodle for that climbing. If you were him,

state your choice and explain why you choose that food.

  • 8/13/2019 Energy Booster (Group 1)

    15/16

    Answer

If I were that student, I will bring energy bar.

This is because it contains cereal, nut,

chocolate and milk which rich in carbohydrate,

protein and fat that have high calorie toprovide enough energy during climbing.
