What’s energy? What’s energy?Energy is something’s or someone’s ability to work, that is the ability to move something using a certain amount of force.

Man has always used every kind of energy nature can offer: wind, sun, water, heat, food.

HistoryHistory

Energy is very important for life on Earth and has been the basic element for the socio-economic progress of humanity.

PrehistoryPrehistoryThe first men used fire and muscle power, both of men and animals.

Fire was the main source of energy: they used it to cook, to fight and to defend themselves and they used it as light.

AncientAncient CivilizationsCivilizationsThey used the strength of animals and slaves, the energy of fire, but they also started to use the energy of the wind (to make ships move).

Middle Ages and RenaissanceMiddle Ages and RenaissanceDuring these ages, man used both wind and water power (wind and water mills).

First Industrial RevolutionFirst Industrial Revolution Another source of energy prevailed in this period: mechanical energy. The first machine was the steam engine invented by James Watt.

Another important invention was the steam locomotive, first used in Great Britain at the beginning of the 19th century.

Others followed: the steamboat, the typewriter, the telegraph and so on.

Second Industrial Revolution Second Industrial Revolution Around 1870, in Europe and USA, there was an unprecedented technological progress. It was a boom for the electricity.

There were a lot of new inventions: the dynamo, the telephone, the phonograph, the light bulb and others.

Oil took the place of charcoal and the internal combustion engine was invented.

TodayTodayOne of the new sources of energy recently discovered is the nuclear energy, considered as a substitute for fossil fuels.
