Energize welcome new Chair

David Sherratt becomes the new Chair of Energize Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin on 1st April 2015. David, who is the CEO of Archery GB (based at Lilleshall National Sports Centre) has been a board member of Energize since 2009 and was one of the Companies first Directors in 2012 when Energize was established as a Charity and Company Limited by Guarantee. During this period David has been the lead Director for Finance, which has enabled Energize to work from a secure financial base.

David replaces outgoing Chair Steve Peters, who joined Energize back in 2007 and has been Chair since 2009 leading the organisation into its current independent status. Steve (who works for British Cycling as Recreation Manager) has overseen some amazing highlights during his six year tenure, including the partnership leading on the promotion of Community Games from its roots in Much Wenlock to become a nationally funded London 2012 legacy programme which saw 4,000 events and 3 million people take part in a local sport / cultural celebration. Steve commented on his time with Energize “I have had 8 fantastic years with Energize and six as Chair, seeing the Company and brand develop into one that is recognised within the sector and has secured its place within Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin as the strategic lead for sport”. He added ‘ It’s sad to leave but I am delighted that Dave Sherratt is to continue as Chair and I’m absolutely convinced that he is the right person to take Energize to the next level, and get hearts beating faster across the area.’

Incoming Chair, David paid tribute to Steve Peters: “Steve’s passion for sport and the work of Energize is significant – he will be greatly missed. He has lead the Company through a great transition to where it is today. I would like to place on record my personal thanks to all of Steve’s hard work and endeavour over the years, Energize would not be where it is today without him.”

Commenting on his appointment as Chair, David said, “I am looking forward to taking over from Steve in April and continuing to build on the great work that has been done to date. This continues to be an exciting time for sport in England and I am looking forward to seeing Energize work with a range of partners (including NGBs and clubs, Local Authorities and the local Police and Crime Commissioners office) to drive forward sports participation across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.”

Thousands take part in County Sport Festival On the 3rd and 4th March 2015 over 1,400 young people from across the County came together to compete in the Winter Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival, as part of Sainsbury’s School Games. Participants came from 50 primary and 37 secondary schools, taking part in 23 events with sports including; dodgeball, basketball, cross country, gymnastics, athletics, rugby, hockey, netball, indoor rowing and volleyball. The standard of competition was very high, with participants showing determination and team work. Congratulations go to East Shropshire who were winners on both the primary and secondary day. In addition to the hundreds of participants, there were also over 150 outstanding young leaders, taking on the roles of team manager, officials and event managers. Their involvement and support during the two days are key to making the Festival run smoothly. Prior to the Festival this year, young people were given the opportunity to compete in a ‘School Games Has Got Talent’ competition, with the opportunity for the winning acts to perform at the opening ceremonies. The winning acts showcased great singing and dancing talent, to get the Festival off to an inspiring start. Also present to inspire participants were Kelda Wood; part of the GB para-canoe team, Natasha Hunt; part of the England women’s Rugby World Cup winning team and Mel Clarke; GB Paralympic archer. Click here for the full results The next Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival will take place on 30th June and 1st July 2015 (Summer Festival). For more information about the Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival please contact Harry Cade, Youth Sport Manager at Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin on 01743 453495 or [email protected]

Survey Responses Needed!

The survey is the first national sport and physical activity survey and as such it is hugely important that as many people who are deaf or hard of hearing know about the survey and complete it. The survey results will benefit CSP`s, NGB`s and other service providers to map and deliver better targeted activities to the deaf community. and hopefully increase the number of deaf inclusive projects funded by both national and local funders. A copy of the Sport and Physical Activity Survey can be viewed here

Support needed for coaches of disability sport

A report released by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) shows that taking part in coached sport has a positive impact on disabled people’s experiences of sport. However, worryingly disabled people, especially young disabled people, seem to have a less satisfactory experience than their non-disabled peers.

Key Findings from the Report:

Young people are less likely to agree that coached sport improved their enjoyment– seven in 10 non-disabled young people agree, and fewer young disabled people- only six in 10. Disabled people feel coaches are less likely to be able to deal with any problems that they may have, set goals or monitor progress. Young disabled people also feel that coaches are less effective at being able to communicate with them and make sessions fun. Coaching can have a positive impact on disabled people’s experiences, but coaches need further education to ensure that disabled people’s experiences are equivalent to their non-disabled peers.

RYA Equality Act

What is a family? Could your club be discriminating? Families come in many shapes and sizes. If your rules still say ‘husband and wife’, you could be making single-parent families, unmarried couples with children, or same-sex couples (even if they are married) feel unwelcome. You are also at risk of discriminating on the grounds of sexual orientation and/or marital status, both of which are protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. Find out more information on the Equality Act and how it applies to your club. Here are some short training videos which illustrate the potential pitfalls of failing to treat everyone equally.
