The Sport and Recreation Alliance launches its Fit for the Future programme The Sport and Recreation Alliance today introduces a major new programme of work to prepare their members for what many acknowledge will be a highly challenging period for the sector.

The Fit for the Future programme will be launched at the Alliance’s Sports Summit, where new Sports Minister Tracey Crouch will be making her first public speech on sport since her appointment and Sport England CEO, Jennie Price, will also be speaking.

It examines: • How changes to public finances may affect sport and recreation policy • Legal and regulatory challenges, such as changes in broadcasting, integrity, tax, intellectual property and European law • How equality within leadership and governance needs to be actively addressed, as well as some serious workforce and volunteering issues • The health agenda and the place of sport and recreation in relation to it • The role which the natural environment can play in getting the nation more active • How and why we measure participation and how that may change in the future.

National parks and AONBs contribute £billions to economy - England's top landscapes equal Birmingham for economic worth

They welcome more than 260 million visitors who spend in excess of £6bn a year and support thousands of jobs and more than 85,000 businesses. More than two thirds of people in England live within half an hour's travel of a National Park or AONB. The report, “So much more than a view…”, says that, as well as being most beautiful and cherished landscapes, with important archaeological and historical sites and valuable wildlife habitats, they also provide employment for thousands of people. The Postcode Community Trust Community Grants Scheme

Postcode Community Trust provides funding opportunities to community groups and charities in Scotland, England and Wales, through grants ranging from £500 - £20,000. The next funding round is open 1st – 31st July 2015.

The amount requested should relate to the strength of the long-term outcomes of the project, for instance the number of beneficiaries should be high for projects requesting £20,000. Projects must be delivered in a maximum of 12 months. Timescales are not so relevant to capital projects, which will be assessed according to how important the need is.

Projects must be for the advancement of community development, with the project having a particular focus, for instance on sport.

Advancing community development involves creating opportunities for the community to learn new skills and, by enabling people to act together, helps further social inclusion and equality.

Examples of what they would like to fund: new equipment, programmes of activities that engage members of a community, kit and equipment for local sports teams and clubs, building renovations and much more.

Oswestry Community Games

Organisers are delighted to announce that the Oswestry Community Games will again be held in Cae Glas Park this year on Sunday 20th September from 11am – 4.30pm.

With over 40 local organisations covering sport and the arts already signed up to deliver on the day, the Games will be bigger and have more variety than last year’s which saw around 1000 people of all ages taking part and having fun in the park. The Games is designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to have fun and to become more active in physical and cultural activities on offer locally. Organisers are thrilled to announce that Amy Hughes, our local 53 Marathons lady and recent London Marathon runner will be our Guest of Honour, and having such an inspirational role model to lead on the day will make it very special. We are also very pleased to report that following Oswestry Rotary Club’s Mary Hignett Bequest Fund agreement to sponsor participants’ medals, we now have Lanyon Bowdler – a local firm of solicitors coming on board, which will be another boost to our funds to cover the costs of the day. Amy Hughes said:- “I am delighted to accept the invitation to be this year’s Guest of Honour for the Oswestry Community Games. I note the Games including Arts, is now in its third year and is growing each year and I very much look forward to playing my part in it. You may be aware that I have recently set up the 53 Foundation to raise money to help people with disabilities to be more active. I am also delighted that this will be the Charity which the Community Games will support on the day. I therefore look forward to meeting everyone who made this event happen and participants on the day.” Amanda Jones of Lanyon Bowdler said:- “Lanyon Bowdler has offices across Shropshire including one in Oswestry, and we are proud to be helping the Oswestry Community Games with some financial assistance. “Our staff will be there to support the Games, its participants, and take part in the activities on the day.” Last year, Oswestry Community Games was recognised as one of the top six in the country by the national Community Games organisation, which was very encouraging, especially given that it was only the second year it had run. This is a hard act to follow, but organisers feel confident even at this stage, that what will be on offer on the day will more than match last year’s Games.

For latest information, please go on Facebook - Oswestry Community Games.
