COMPREHENSION Ralph’s Starring Role

Ralph had never been so nervous in all his life. The school play was about to begin, and

Ralph had a starring role in it. Actually, he was playing a star. Other students were playing

the roles of different heavenly bodies. The play was called “A Journey to Jupiter.” The stars

and planets were characters in the play. And they all had lines they had to memorize.

Ralph had never acted on stage before. He only auditioned for the play because his

friend and classmate Bart was auditioning. Bart got the role of Earth’s nearest neighbor, the

moon. It was a tremendous part with lots of stirring speeches. Ralph was thrilled to have a

small part with just a couple of lines. He kept repeating them over and over in his head so he

wouldn’t forget them.

The play was about to start. The director prompted the actors to get on stage and take

their places. Ralph put on his pointy star costume. Now he truly looked like a member of

a stellar cast! He took his place and waited for the curtain to rise and for the play to get

underway. A rocket ship traveling to Jupiter appeared. It rolled across the stage on wheels.

A girl peered out from inside the rocket ship. “Wow!” she said. “Look at all the

brilliant stars!”

That was Ralph’s cue. Ralph was supposed to say, “Hi! Where are you going?” But he

was so nervous that he couldn’t remember his line. All he could remember was “Hi!”

The girl frowned at him. “We’re going to Jupiter,” she said. “Do you know how to get

there?” She was afraid that Ralph would forget the next line too. But he remembered it.

“Just go past Saturn with all its rings, and Jupiter is straight ahead,” he said.

“Thanks!” said the girl with a smile.

Ralph bowed, and the audience laughed. Ralph felt good. Maybe he’d forgotten one line,

but he remembered the other one. And the audience liked him. He was a star all right!

When the play was over, all the actors took their bows. Ralph smiled and bowed again.

“Well, you got through it okay,” said Bart in his moon costume. “Are you still nervous?”

“Not at all,” said Ralph. “This was more fun than I thought it would be. I think I’m

going to try out for the next school play.”

Happy Birthday Mr. Kang

Seeing Stars

The Picnic

Mr. Swenson’s chess club was planning the annual club picnic, which was

always open to every student from the school. The picnic would occur in the early

summer after the end of the school year. The club members were considering which

town park they should choose for their picnic.

“The park has to have picnic tables, so we can eat lunch,” Mr. Swenson said.

“We need a playing field, too, so we can play baseball,” said Jim.

“What about chess tables? Aren’t we going to play chess? We are the chess club,

after all,” said Maria, laughing.

“What about a playground for the kids who don’t want to play sports or chess?”

asked Jim.

“And what if it rains?” asked Ming. “We need a park with a shelter so it won’t

rain on our parade . . . I mean, picnic.”

“You people are thinking of all the features of the perfect place. That’s great!”

said Mr. Swenson. “Now let’s examine this chart of the four town parks to check

which one would be best.”

CHESTER TOWN PARKSFEATURE River Park Rainbow Park Duck Park Smith ParkPlayground x x x xBall Field x x x xPicnic Tables x x xShelter x x xSchool Groups OK x x xParking x x x x

“I’ll call the Parks Office and ask whether Duck Park has chess tables. If not, we

can bring our own boards,” said Mr. Swenson.

“This is going to be the best picnic ever!” the club members cheered.
