Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived a big green ogre

named Shrek. He was all alone, with no friends and no one to love or love him back.

Not so long ago, in a small Midwestern suburb, there lived a boy named Eric. He was into cartooning, baseball’s Chicago Cubs and, in football season, Da Bears.

This is the story of how the giant creature and the little kid from Carol Stream, Ill., came together to live happily ever after in a big, bright, beautiful world.

Eric — last name Petersen — grew up to become a husband, dad and New York actor. He played Papa Ogre, the Straw Pig and even the main monster a few times in Shrek: The Musical on Broadway, when replacement actors were hired. He has some nice regional theater credits and is a frequent guest on TV’s “Law & Order,” but his full-time status as title ogre in this Shrek national tour is his biggest gig to date.

It almost didn’t happen. Even though Eric did theater in high

school (the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, the Leading Player in Pippin, one of Noel Coward’s ill-mannered Brits in Hay Fever), he thought his future was in cartooning. That changed as high school morphed into college, at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. Eric acted constantly there (Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the dashing Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, the talented but self-absorbed jazz trumpeter/father in Warren Leight’s Side Man).

After graduation he found himself at the Barn Theatre, Michigan’s oldest professional summer stock company.

One season there, he reasoned, and he’d be off to the West Coast to do the television and movie thing.

Then he met a girl.Lisa Marie Morabito, by name. An

actress. One who saw her future in New York. So Eric adjusted his compass and headed east. They married in October 2007 and now have a 9-month-old daughter named Sophia.

“That was a good decision I made there,” he says, a smile in his voice.

The Petersens learned they were pregnant just before Shrek closed on Broadway. Sophia made her entrance on the national tour’s second day in, of all places, Chicago, Dad’s hometown. The family is traveling with Shrek, a tour that began last July and is scheduled to end this July in Los Angeles. Home base is a place in Midtown Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen.

They’re having a blast. “We look at it as a really cool adventure for our family,” Eric says. “I like living in hotels. I like having somebody who cleans the room every day when you leave and changes the sheets.”

Shrek, in a way, completes a circle for Petersen. He was a leading man in high school and college but got mostly

character roles in New York – largely at Theatreworks U.S.A., the nation’s largest theater for family audiences. His biggest role previously was as William Barfée (“that’s BARR-fay, with an accent aigu …”), the nasally nerd with the magic foot, in the national tour of The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee, which launched at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre.

Shrek puts Petersen’s feet firmly back, albeit flatulently, on leading man ground.

“It’s a huge honor to be trusted with the franchise,” he says, recognizing his responsibilities as top man in a major musical. One is leadership, another preparation. Petersen re-watched all the Shrek animated movies to find his inner ogre, and went back to the source material, William Steig’s 1990 children’s book.

And how that ogre – the word “shrek” means “monster” in Yiddish and “terror” or “fright” in German – has grown! This cast has more characters (nearly 50) than Steig’s little book has pages (32).

Still, life upon the swampy stage isn’t all bright lights and glory. For the guy playing Shrek, it can get downright boggy. Without trying, Eric lost 40

pounds during his first seven months on the road. The fat suit he wears eight times a week weighs 45 pounds. It takes 90 minutes to put on his movie-caliber makeup and 45 minutes to take it off. He wears ice packs on his chest and back to keep his core temperature down; by intermission they’ve melted and must be replaced. He drinks more than 140 ounces of water to stay hydrated during each performance and, should Mother Nature call, uses the little ogre’s room in full costume via a specially designed, strategically placed opening.

Despite it all, for Petersen it all comes down to one actor playing a role to the best of his ability.

“The trick is just finding the emotional core and truth of somebody’s story,” he says. “Then you just try to live that as honestly as you can onstage.”

DavID lINDSay-aBaIRE (Book & Lyrics) was most recently nominated for two Tony Awards for his work on Shrek The Musical: Best Book of a Musical and Best Score (with composer Jeanine Tesori). Before that he was awarded the 2008 Ed Kleban Award as America’s most promising musical theatre lyricist and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Rabbit Hole, which premiered on Broadway at MTC’s Biltmore Theatre. Rabbit Hole also received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Play, and the Spirit of America Award. His other shows include Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo, Wonder of the World, High Fidelity and A Devil Inside, among others. In addition to his theatre work, David’s screen adaptation of Rabbit Hole is scheduled for release this fall. It stars Nicole Kidman and is directed by John Cameron Mitchell. David is a proud New Dramatists alum, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and the Juilliard School, as well as a member of the WGA and the Dramatists Guild Council.

JEaNINE TESoRI (Music) has written four Tony-nominated scores for Broadway: Twelfth Night (Lincoln Center); Thoroughly Modern Millie (lyrics, Dick Scanlan); Caroline, or Change (lyrics, Tony Kushner); and Shrek The Musical (lyrics, David Lindsay-Abaire). The production of Caroline, or Change at the National Theater in London received the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Her first musical, Violet, written with Brian Crawley, received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1997. She has been the recipient of many other honors including Drama Desk and Obie awards, and was cited by ASCAP as the first woman composer to have “two new musicals running concurrently on Broadway.” She composed the

music for the New York Shakespeare Festival’s Mother Courage, directed by George C. Wolfe, starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. She has written songs for the movie Shrek The Third. Her film scores include Nights in Rodanthe, Winds of Change, Show Business and Wrestling With Angels. She composed songs for the Disney DVD releases Mulan II, Lilo and Stitch II and The Little Mermaid III. She has produced 60 CDs for Silver-Burdett Ginn’s Making Music and the original cast albums for Twelfth Night, Violet and Caroline, or Change. Ms. Tesori, a Barnard graduate, is on the council of the Dramatists Guild. Her next project is a new musical with the playwright Lisa Kron.

wIllIaM STEIg (Author of the Book Shrek!).Named the “King of Cartoons” by Newsweek, William Steig remains The New Yorker’s longest-running contributor, with more than 1,600 drawings and 117 covers to his name. He began writing and illustrating books for children at the age of 60. His work Sylvester and the Magic Pebble earned him the Caldecott Medal, the highest honor bestowed on children’s picture books, but it was the 1990 fairy tale Shrek! that ultimately brought him his largest audience by inspiring one of the most successful film franchises in motion picture history. William Steig wrote and illustrated children’s books up until the last year of his life and died in 2003 at the age of 95.

Memphis is the true story of a white disc jockey who was one of the first to play black artists’ music on the radio in the 1950s. The show explores the forbidden love that develops between him and an African-American singer and features a wild rock ’n’ roll score.

Billy Elliot the Musical is about what happens when a boxer realizes his real passion is dance. The musical comedy takes place during the 1984-85 coal miners’ strike in Britain. While Billy’s father and brother battle riot police, Billy secretly takes ballet lessons. The score is written by renowned musician Elton John.

Travel back in time to 1815 Toulon, France, where the tragic story Les Misérables unfolds. The classic tale of redemption and revolution is the third longest-running Broadway show in history, so don’t miss this 25th Anniversary production.

Last, but not least, is Jersey Boys. This documentary-style musical is based on the 1960s group The Four Seasons and tells the story of how four average boys — Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi — became one

Spring is beautiful in Atlanta, with cherry blossoms and dogwood trees in bloom. And as spring

The Lighthouse Trolley (912-638-3333) is a fun way to learn about the island’s history. It is owned by Cap Fendig, a local character and sometime politician, whose family has been here since the 1800s. Take a narrated tour or hop on and off the trolley at scheduled stops, including Fort Frederica National Monument (nps.gov/fofr/index.htm), the Maritime Center at the Historic Coast Guard Station (saintsimonslighthouse.org) and the famous St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum (912-638-4666). Fendig’s company (capfendig.com) also offers dolphin tours, bird-watching trips and real-estate services — in case you decide to stay.

Learn about the coastal ecosystem aboard the Lady Jane (shrimpcruise.com, 912-265-5711). Piloted by Captain Credle, the vessel takes passengers into St.

Simons Sound, where marine biologists sort shrimp from the other creatures caught in nets and educate guests about what they’re seeing. Afterwards, there’s a shrimp boil.

And it’s not just any shrimp. The salt marsh grasses available to Wild Georgia Shrimp™ make them particularly sweet. Thanks to a large local sturgeon population, this region also is known for caviar said to be superior to Russia’s.

Jekyll iSlandLegislation requires that at least 66 percent of Jekyll Island remain undeveloped. The island is a state park, so there is a small fee for all cars ($5/day or $25/week). On the island’s east coast, where the beaches are, an ongoing revitalization project has added budget hotels and a 20-acre oceanfront park with picnic pavilions and wheelchair-friendly beach access points. New shopping and dining outlets are under construction, but old favorites like Blackbeard’s Restaurant (912-635-3522) offer hearty fare and spectacular ocean sunsets.

The Intracoastal Waterway borders the island’s west coast. Dine waterfront at the Jekyll Island Marina in Sea Jay’s Waterfront Cafe & Pub (seajays.com, 912-635-3200) and on the Jekyll Island Pier at sister restaurants Latitude 31 (dinner only) and the Rah Bar (coastaldining.com, 912-635-3800), where live music plays three to four nights a week and oysters and shrimp are available by the pound.

The Jekyll Island Club Hotel (jekyllclub.com, 800-535-9547), at the heart of the island’s historic district, is a short walk from the pier. Built for vacationing millionaires more than 100 years ago, the club was described in a 1904 edition of Munsey’s Magazine as “the richest, most exclusive, most inaccessible club in the world.” Several of the surrounding millionaires’ “cottages” are now gift shops,

restaurants, event facilities and atmospheric accommodations for small groups.

The resort can help you discover what life was like during the Gilded Age with walking tours of the historic district. Learn how the Federal Reserve System was planned by a select group of bankers and politicians at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. See the island by bicycle or on horseback or play croquet on the club’s lawn.

Four golf courses on the island’s interior use natural sand barriers, inland lakes and pine forests to create challenging links-style play. The best course for multigenerational groups is Pine Lakes, which has family friendly tee boxes. Another prime attraction is the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (georgiaseaturtlecenter.org), a rehabilitation, research and educational center that has special programs for kids.

At WellStar Kennestone and Cobb Hospitals, physicians who are leaders in their respective fields are performing the latest in minimally invasive surgery and using their expertise to teach other clinicians in the region. Whether it is gastric, neurological or orthopedic, the number of procedures now being performed laparoscopically continues to grow.

“The breadth and depth of the technology being used by physicians at WellStar is astounding, and we are very pleased to be able to offer these procedures at our facility,” said Sherron Kurtz, executive director of surgical services at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

These surgeries are often performed using small cameras with microscopes, tiny lights and high definition monitors. And physicians are able to perform these procedures using only one incision — through the belly button. These single-incision surgeries are currently being used for gallbladder removals at WellStar Cobb and Kennestone Hospitals.

Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) uses the mini-cameras to diagnose and treat conditions in the chest. During this surgery, one or more small incisions are made in the chest. A tiny fiber-optic camera, called a thorascope, is inserted through one

incision, and surgical instruments are inserted through the same or other small incisions. The thorascope transmits images of the inside of the chest on a video monitor, guiding the surgeon in maneuvering the instruments to complete the procedure. VATS can replace a traditional thoracotomy, which uses one large incision to gain access to the chest.

Another addition to the world of minimally invasive procedures is the da Vinci Surgical System®. WellStar Kennestone and Cobb Hospitals offer gynecologic, urologic and cardiac surgical procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System, robotics technology that allows for significantly smaller incisions than those made during traditional open surgeries. Da Vinci is fundamentally similar to previous forms of laparoscopic surgery, but its high-

definition 3-D technology allows the operating surgeon

significantly better vision than does traditional video equipment. Da

Vinci’s technology only enhances a

surgeon’s skills – it does not replace them.
