First you notice the colors. Robes and headpieces in magenta, electric orange, celery, citrus and

every shade of blue under the sun. Then the harmonies seduce you,

daring you to keep your head from nodding, your feet from tapping, your shoulders from swaying.

The songs convey strife, celebration, optimism, history and the many journeys of the human spirit.

Before you realize it, Soweto Gospel Choir has beckoned you inside its world of drums, vocals and smiles.

At some point in its performance, you’ll likely hear what makes the singers

tick. “Soweto Gospel Choir is usually a happy group of people,” one of its members will explain in a lilting voice, “as long as we’re either singing, dancing or eating, sometimes all three at the same time.”

She’ll go on: “When full and fat and having excess energy to burn, what better way to use up this energy than to convert it into rhythm, movement and even song?”

The 52-voice Soweto Gospel Choir, formed in 2002 to celebrate the unique and inspirational power of African gospel music, draws on the best talent from the many churches in and around Soweto, formerly an apartheid-strangled township and now a lower-

class neighborhood in Johannesburg, South Africa. The group is dedicated to sharing the joy of faith, blending elements of Negro spirituals, reggae and American popular music with its African gospel foundation.

So the choir’s repertoire includes such songs as “Amazing Grace,” “This Little Light of Mine” and “Put Your Hand,” alongside more traditional South African praise songs. They sing a cappella — voices only — but are rarely still and rarely without percussion accompaniment.

“I have never experienced any other concert that can hold you at the verge of tears only to uplift you in witnessing the infectious euphoria onstage, in the space of one hour,” an Edinburgh critic has written.

Honors have followed the choristers around the globe. The group was named best choir and best international choir at the 2003 American Gospel Music Awards. Then came Grammy Awards for best traditional world music in 2007 (for its second CD, Blessed) and 2008 (for its third CD, African Spirit). The choir’s collaboration with Peter Gabriel on the song “Down to Earth” from the feature film WALL-E, won a Grammy for best

movie song. In 2009, the choir became the first South African artists to perform at the Academy Awards, singing “Down to Earth” with John Legend.

The 52 singers also have performed for former President Bill Clinton and at birthday celebrations for Archbishop Desmond Tutu, their patron. They’ve sung with performers as diverse as Bono, Queen, Jimmy Cliff, Amy Winehouse, Queen Latifah, Wyclef Jean, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Celine Dion, Bebe Winans and Kirk Franklin, among others.

They’ve appeared on the “Today Show,” “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” and

“The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” always smiling, always swaying, always sharing their joy in music even though they are on the road and away from home as much as nine months each year.

Every stop — be it New Orleans, New York, London, Australia or Africa — brings accolades.

“These absolutely thrilling singers need nothing but their voices to make dazzling music,” a Billboard magazine writer said. Then summing up their magic up added, “If heaven is like this, I want to be there.”

To date, the choir has collected more than $4 million for its foundation. In South Africa, the choir performs for a variety of charitable organizations.

• Soweto Gospel Choir joined Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his guests for his 80th birthday celebrations, held in Cape Town, in October. Members performed at the launch of Tutu’s new book, and backed Bono on “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” as a surprise for the archbishop. They also sang with other artists at both the cathedral service and the private luncheon for their patron. Bono described them as “brilliant!”

• By special request from Clarence House, Soweto Gospel Choir was given the honor of singing for Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, during their royal visit to South Africa in November 2011.

1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission.2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.
