DEAR FRIENDS, For the first time in recent history, the majority of public school students in the US are low-income – 51%. Poverty is more than an economic issue. It is also an education issue. Children living in poverty have higher incidences of absenteeism and are 6 times more likely to drop out of school.

Now more than ever, students need effective and intentional supports and that’s where Communi-ties In Schools comes in. In Central Texas, we serve communities with the highest concentrations of families living in poverty and assist those students who are struggling the most. Our unique model places highly skilled social service professionals inside schools to assess students’ needs and individually tailor interventions so that they succeed in the classroom and in life.

This year, Communities In Schools will celebrate 30 years of helping to break the cycle of poverty in Central Texas. Our success on behalf of students and families is possible due to strong partnerships, a generous and engaged community of supporters, and an incredible network of employees, board members, and community volunteers.

Inside this report, you will read about our work in 2014.

ON-CAMPUS STUDENT SUPPORT The founding principle of CIS is to establish one-on-one relation-ships with individual students in order to support them beyond obstacles to success in school. CIS places a full-time social service provider on the school campus to deliver a variety of services. On- campus programming includes crisis intervention, individual counseling, support groups, basic life skills, tutoring, mentoring, enrichment oppor-tunities – all tailored to meet the specific needs of the students so that they can be academically successful and fully engaged in learning.
