March 2017

Meet our Temporary Pastor- Reverend William Schram

M y journey to ministry reads like Jonah’s – I ran from it for a while.

My father was a Presbyterian pastor and I grew up with people asking if I was going to be a pastor like him. So I said no. In college, I connected with a student-led Bible Study/Fellowship group. I didn’t tell my background right away and was able to interact as a Christian as me, not a lineage. After college I served in a City/County Ombudsman’s office. I was politically liberal. Helping people in complaints against bureaucracy felt fulfilling. I also got involved in a local church where I was drafted to help with the youth group.

I soon found that it was the Gospel that added meaning to my weekly work and renewed my spirit after dealing with complaints. My teaching with the youth group drew positive response from students and other teachers. Others in the church asked if I’d considered ministry. They asked on the basis of who I was, not who my father was. I made the decision to go to seminary realizing that I wasn’t going to be a minister exactly like my father any more than he could be one exactly like me. And that’s how God liked it. With that realization, it became a joy to talk ministry with Dad.

I attended McCormick seminary in Chicago, where I met my wife Jenny. We got married just before the start of our senior year at seminary. From there we went to a co-pastor position, each ½ time, at a redevelopment church in

Detroit Presbytery. After the birth of our first daughter, we realized that: 1. One small church salary and a child made things financially tight; 2. We each needed to grow in ministry beyond what we did ½ time, and do so without stepping on the other’s areas of responsibilities. I went full time at the church and Jenny did some part-time interims, and then became the stated clerk of the presbytery.

I have served churches, in seminary and since, in urban, near suburb, small town, county seat towns. I have served as pastor, associate pastor, interim pastor, and have served as a chaplain at a hospital.

In Detroit and Lehigh presbyteries I have been on and chaired Committee on Ministry. I served on the Committee on Preparation for Ministry in Detroit and Scioto Valley presbyteries. I have completed interim training and was trained as a consultant for the visioning process that Lehigh Presbytery provided for congregations in partnership with the Center for Parish Development.

Worship

Between work times, I enjoy walking outdoors while humming the first verses of songs that I know at least the first verse of. My musical tastes are varied from the popular music of my younger days, to hymns, to contemporary

Christian songs and to jazz. After being told by my doctor to go on a heart healthy diet, I have gotten interested in cooking and figuring out how to make food taste interesting without salt.

We have two natural and one foster daughter. Delightfully, we have now a granddaughter to enjoy.

Pastor Schram will begin his time with us on April 19th.

Worship Focus Group - Update

L ast Fall the Worship Focus Group completed a year of reflection and analysis of possible adjustments and improvements to our worship structure. The effort was

an outgrowth of the recognized importance of ensuring our worship service remains meaningful for both our current congregation as well as those whom we have not yet reached. Though the process will likely resume once our next pastor is installed, it is perhaps worth noting the highlights.

Consideration was given primarily to (1) what makes for an ideal worship service, (2) what technological enhancements might prove effective, and (3) whether to create a second service. Though some ideas from the Membership Committee survey have been successfully incorporated, they underscore the difficulty of discerning a clear answer to #1. Technology is everywhere, but what is appropriate for Faith? While we may not be headed toward a live twitter feed during worship like some congregations, could there be merit in streaming our worship service? A second service continues to be viewed primarily as a potential means of more inclusively spreading the good news. This could take the form of a shorter service on a different day and possibly target those with little or no church experience.

Retaining relevance and meaning in worship is a challenging pursuit for every faith. To this end, crafters of the new Presbyterian Hymnal have demonstrated how we can purposefully extract key elements from our past and include fresh expressions from the present, all while remaining true to our faith. Please continue to share your thoughts on this important subject!

Lenten Worship Services

T he first day of March this year also brings with it the start of Lent. This season is a time

of prayer and self-examination in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of the Lord at Easter. To provide continuity in our worship during this time, Rev. Cynthia Simmons will be leading the Lenten services at Faith.

Please note that there will not be Wednesday Soup Suppers during Lent this year.

In addition to our regular Sunday worship services, the following special services will be held:

Ash Wednesday (imposition of ashes offered) - March 1, 7:30 p.m.

Maundy Thursday (communion service) - April 13, 7:30 p.m.

Good Friday (Tenebrae service) - April 14, 7:30 p.m.

Easter Sunday - April 16, 8:00 and 10:30 a.m.

Please note that the second worship service on Easter Sunday will be half an hour later than our usual Sunday morning services. This is to allow a little extra time for the breakfast in Fellowship Hall, and also for preparations of the special music offerings that will be shared during worship.

About Rev. Simmons: Rev. Cynthia Simmons is Pastor Emerita of the First Presbyterian Church of

Easton, having retired from that congregation at the end of June, 2016. Prior to serving in Easton, Cindy served pastorates in Allentown (PA); Elmhurst, Naperville, and Wheaton (IL); and Medford (OR). A native of the Chicago area, Cindy is a graduate of the University of Illinois and of the San Francisco Theological Seminary (Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.)

Cindy is married to the Rev. Dr. Stephen Simmons, a Presbyterian minister who serves as professor of theology at Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem. Cindy and Steve have two sons, Mark and Ben, both graduates of Emmaus High School.

Youth Group News In March, we have planned an interfaith gardening event with Keneseth Israel, Temple Beth El, The Muslim Association of the Lehigh Valley, and the Alburtis Muslim Community. Please mark your calendars and RSVP as soon as possible for this first event. We must have our final RSVP by March 5th.

We will meet at Keneseth Israel at 12:15pm after worship, so we’ll need 1 or 2 parents as volunteers to carpool our youth

to the event from Faith. We will not have a regular evening youth group meeting. We will have this event which will be from 12:15-2:00pm at Keneseth Israel, and parents can pick up youth from Faith at 2:15pm. Mission Opportunity!

Y ou may have seen postings on social media that people are building "care kits" of toiletries and other necessities for the homeless in their area. Alicia White

Shussett has shared how volunteers at Steve's church, St. Paul’s Lutheran, are working with Crossroads (a day shelter) in putting together bags like shown in the photo. Alicia carries some in her car and hands them out to folks she encounters along the roads and by-ways of the valley. Interested? Speak to Jack Decker.

Faith to Faith Update!

P lease read the screenshot of the message Jack Decker received

from our mission church in Baton Rouge. It's a reminder to us all (maybe) that churches are carrying more burdens than just money and budgets. They are currently meeting in homes and have also lost their Hispanic congregation partners when they were flooded out.

“I pray we choose to continue to partner with them and provide assistance while they rebuild, as we too face our challenges at Faith.”

A Community Space

T he 412 continues to schedule dates! Check the calendar for starting times. www.412emmaus.com.

Details will be shared as they are made available!

Mar. 4— A 412 Community Arts FREE Workshop This is a FREE workshop. There is limited capacity for this workshop. It will be open to the first 12 participants to register by emailing Joanne Marchetto at [email protected]. Ebru is traditional Turkish painting art. Marbling is the art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water and then transforming this pattern to paper. The special tools of the trade are brushes of horsehair bound to straight rose twigs, a deep tray made of unknotted pinewood, natural earth pigments, cattle gall and tragacanth. It is believed to be invented in the thirteenth century Turkistan. This decorative art then spread to China, India and Persia and Anatolia. Seljuk and Ottoman calligraphers and artists used marbling to decorate books, imperial decrees, official correspondence and documents. New forms and techniques were perfected in the process and Turkey remained the center of marbling for many centuries. Up until the 1920's, marblers had workshops in the Beyazit district of Istanbul, creating for both the local and European market, where it is known as Turkish marble paper.

One Great Hour of Sharing: SHARING RESOURCES AND CHANGING LIVES

S tarted in 1949, OGHS is one of the oldest ecumenical efforts in raising funds for the betterment of communities. What started as an hour-long radio appeal has

evolved into the most participated Special Offering in the PCUSA. 60% of the congregations participate and projects supported by the OGHS reach more than 100 countries.

A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (32% of offering)

With our OGHS offerings, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is able to support our Lehigh Presbytery Helping Hands team, refugees in Syria, earthquake victims in Ecuador and other groups in bringing hope and healing to disaster-torn communities from the shores of NJ, SC, and the Gulf Coast to the West Coast and throughout our nation and world.

Presbyterian Hunger Program (36% of offering)

The Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP) is able to help groups establish community gardens in food deserts like downtown Detroit and New Orleans.

Self-Development of People (32% of offering)

The Self-Development of People (SDOP) partners with people and communities with tools for development and education to alleviate poverty, oppression and injustice.

Faith Presbyterian Church will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing offering on Palm Sunday, April 9.

In 2016 we received $6069.00, with 51 people/families (41% of our giving units) participating. Do we think we can increase our percentage to 50% in 2017?

I Thessalonians 5:18

T he words Thank You are two very powerful and motivating words. They let us know when we are doing things right and that we are appreciated. They can never

Dear Faith Family,

Thank you to everyone for all your prayers, cards and support during this difficult journey. I truly appreciate every one of them. I am so very thankful to God and my donor for this miracle of a new life. It is such a blessing to feel good and be able to live again.

God bless each of you. Lois Staack

SCRIP Program

T hank you to all the participants in the Great Lakes SCRIP and Weis gift card programs. Profits for the year 2017 will continue to be designated as additional

income toward the Operating Budget. Please help this program continue to provide funds to the church by checking the order due dates in the Faith Flyer each month, and weekly Faith Life insert on Sundays.

The total amount raised in 2017 is $193.10 The next deadline is March 12. Faith Church uses the scrip fundraising program, allowing church members to

raise money for the church. Scrip is just another way to pay for everyday purchases using gift cards in place of cash, checks, and credit cards.

You simply purchase gift cards from the church at face value. The cards are then ordered by the church’s Scrip coordinator at a reduced price. The difference is an instant rebate for the church, which is then used to defray the costs of items that Session has approved of in advance. In the past, the rebates have helped to pay for blacktop repair and lighting improvement.

Help the church make this program a bigger success!! For a complete list of retailers or for more information check the table in the Fellowship Hall or www.glscrip.com. Contact Lynda Scheirer at [email protected] if you have any logistical questions.

Did You Know?

The church recycles plastic, glass bottles, tin & aluminum cans. We do not recycle aluminum foil, paper cups or foam products. Please put only appropriate items in recycling bin by the kitchen sink.

If you need cleaning supplies, the janitor’s closet is always open and available. “Someone else” never takes home the kitchen towels for laundering. Feel

encouraged to do so when you are involved in clean-up. Did you know that our big field is part of the Lehigh County Emergency

Management Plan? The field is large enough for helicopters to land on for evacuations or transporting people from an evacuation site to Emmaus. Very interesting!

The counter in the church office is a work space. When you place baskets, boxes and bags on the counter, they are in the way of the weekly work flow. Please find other places for their placement, and let those who are picking them up know where to look.

If you call the church early on a Sunday morning, your message may not be retrieved until Monday.

When Fellowship Hall and/or the kitchen are not in use, all of their doors should be kept closed to contain a fire, should one occur.

Putting liquid in the trash often results in trickling stains as trash bags are carried through the church to be placed outside. Please dump liquids in a sink before discarding your cups.

There is a lost and found box in the narthex, by the coat rack, where there is also a collection of coats, hats, etc. that have been forgotten.

Deadline for the April 2017 issue of The Faith Flyer March 19, 2016 12:00 noon

[email protected]

Kindly leave any printed materials in the church secretary’s mailbox, submitted with your name and best contact number. Thank you.

The Faith Flyer Crew will meet on Thursday, March 23 @ 9:30 AM for collating. Electronic copies are available Friday, March 24! Go paperless!

You can quickly get your hard copy at church on Sunday, March 26.

Requirements for Flyer & Bulletin Submissions When submitting material for The Flyer or the Sunday bulletin…

Submissions asked to be in Arial 11 pt.

When a special font is desired, email it to the church office, along with a note as to its intended use.

Send only articles created by word processing programs like Microsoft Word. Do not use spreadsheets.

Do not use borders or other fancy formatting.

Keep the flyer deadline in mind when you are holding an event. You must publicize far enough in advance to assure timely notification.

Running an announcement in the bulletin for too many weeks causes loss of interest. Three weeks is a good rule of thumb.

DEADLINES ARE STRICTLY OBSERVED.

Production Schedules & Deadlines To help those making submissions to our regularly scheduled printed material,

please use this information. Keep in mind, these are deadlines, not guidelines.

Bulletin Faith Flyer Production: Begins Monday mornings Begins a week prior to the deadline. Deadline: Wednesdays by 2:00 PM Third Sunday of each month. Printed: Thursday mornings, promptly Tuesday after deadline. Collated: Thursday, late morning. Thursday after the 3rd Sunday, 10 AM
