Clear and accurate communication between parents and faculty members is critical to the welfare of our students. Parents requesting return phone calls and emails have the right to expect school personnel to contact them within a reasonable time frame regarding concerns or questions. Please understand that teachers, counse-lors, and administrators are committed to providing parents with timely feedback,

but consideration should be given to everyone’s schedule and responsibilities. With that in mind, I am asking parents to allow up to 48 hours for school personnel to respond to emails and phone calls. If you have an emergency that requires immediate attention, please contact your child’s assistant principal. As always, thank you for your ongoing support. David F. Piperato Principal

Counseling Financial Aid Workshop

On Thursday, January 10, 2013, the Emmaus High School counseling office will host a financial aid workshop. Mrs. Kim Adamson, assistant director of Financial Aid Services at Cedar Crest College, will be speaking to parents/guardians and students about FAFSA, financial aid and the application process. The program will begin promptly at 6:30 pm in the high school auditorium. On Thursday, January 17, 2013, Mrs. Adamson will return to Emmaus High School for a “FAFSA Completion Session.” Parents will have the opportunity to complete their financial aid form and receive direction if necessary.

EHS College Fair The counseling department is excited to announce the 1

st Annual Emmaus High School College

Fair. The college fair will be held at EHS on Wednesday, May 1, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Please mark your calendars now and plan to spend some time visiting with representatives from colleg-es, technical schools and other post-secondary programs. More details to come!

Important Information for the Upcoming Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

AP Exams will be administered May 6- May 16, 2013.

Any student interested in taking an Advanced Placement (AP) Exam this May should attend an organizational meeting on Wednesday, February 6, during EITHER period 3 OR period 9 in the auditorium. Students only attend ONE of these sessions. Mrs. Demchak, AP Coordinator, and Mr. Wood, assistant AP coordinator, will conduct the meeting. At the meeting, they will re-view the Exam Schedule with the students, the process for ordering and paying for the AP Ex-ams, and the AP Bulletin for Students and Parents.

The first day to order AP Exams is Monday, February 25. The last day to order AP Exams is Fri-day, March 8. All students must register and pay for each exam in the counseling office. The cost of each exam is $89. Payment is by cash or check (payable to EHS) ONLY. You do not need to write multiple checks if your child is taking more than one exam; a single check for the total amount is fine. College Board fee reductions and state and federal subsidies are available for students with financial need. Please have your child speak to Mrs. Demchak or Mr. Wood re-garding possible eligibility for either of these programs.

All exams will be ordered on March 12. If a student needs to cancel a test that was already or-dered or add a test that they forgot to order, an additional charge of $25 will be assessed, so please plan accordingly. We are giving the students plenty of time to decide which exams to take. If a student is not sure about taking an exam, he/she should consult with his/her teacher. Any senior should contact the admissions office of the college they are planning on attending to verify that the college awards AP credit.

Emerging Health Care Professionals and Emerging Engineering Professionals is a Dual-Enrollment opportunity that combines interactive, university-level classroom learning and job shadowing in an engineering and health care setting. The program is designed for high school seniors 2013-14, interested in exploring careers first-hand. What is SAP? The SAP team is here to help you access school and community services for your child. The program identifies issues, that pose a barrier to a student's learning and school success. Stu-dent Assistance Programs are state mandated in all secondary schools in Pennsylvania. How does the program work? When someone recognizes any change in behavior that impacts student success, his/her name is referred to the SAP team. A referral may come from any of the following individuals: counselor, administrator, teacher, parent, or another student . Students may also refer them-selves. If deemed necessary, a call is made to the home to invite parents to a meeting to discuss the concerns.

What happens at the meeting? Team members meet and explain the concerns to parents. Parents are presented with a vari-ety of options to help their child. If parents are interested in the program, then they sign a consent form. The team can then begin to assist the student to overcome the barriers that he/she is experiencing. What are the benefits of the Student Assistance Program?

To help foster a team approach to problem solving

To enhance positive school experiences for all students

To provide support for parents and students Do you see your child showing any of these behaviors?

Withdrawing from family, friends, and/or school Depressed or anxious Defying authority, both at home and at school Acting aggressively Lying Needing money without an explanation Sudden drop in grades Experimenting with drugs or alcohol

If you are concerned about your child, please contact the SAP team at 610-965-1650 ext. 21926 to discuss your concerns. You may also contact your child’s counselor for help.

Graduation will be held on Sunday, June 9, at 1:00 pm in Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena. The beginning of January signals the start of graduation planning for the Class of 2013. The Student Activities Office is consolidating much of the information into two (2) packets, the first of which was mailed in the beginning of January, and the second mailing is scheduled for April. We believe the timing allows you the opportunity to properly plan for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Included in the initial packet was information on ordering caps and gowns, yearbooks, graduation announcements, as well as details on the senior ball and grad-uation. The second packet will include information on the Senior Awards Program, gradua-tion practice, tickets, baccalaureate service, diploma distribution, graduation pictures and much more. EHS Hurricane Sandy Relief Staten Island, NY

On Friday, November 9, 2012, a group of EHS students headed to Staten Island, NY, to offer assistance and aid to those families devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The relief effort was organized by their Spanish teacher, Mrs. Claudia Risi, who reached out to the EHS community and students for donations of winter items that affected families desperately needed. Mrs. Risi sought help from Mr. Piperato, who rented a bus for the trip. She enlisted the aid of her fellow Spanish teacher, Mrs. Jessica Babbitt, and along with 41 of their students, 3 chaperones, a bus full

of supplies and a willingness to help others, they set out for the island. The students helped with the volunteer effort by cleaning the streets of debris and delivering food supplies to families without power and those whose homes were damaged by the storm.

Pennsylvania Math League members will participate in a national test, the American Math Competition (AMC) on February 5 during school hours. The AMC is a 75 minute multiple-choice test with content primarily in algebra and geometry. The logic and reasoning required make the exam good practice for the more difficult problems on the PSAT and SAT. Please note that the AMC does not allow the use of calculators. Those with the highest scores on the AMC will be invited to take part in the American Invitational Mathematics Exam on March 14. Another competition available to all who wish to participate is the Lehigh University contest on Sat-urday, March 2. Students are grouped into teams of 4 for competition purposes, but all individually take a 2 hour written examination without the aid of calculators.

Students are chosen from the Lehigh University contest to prepare for the American Region Mathe-matics League (ARML) competition in June. For more information and practice problems for these competitions, see Mrs. Hoffert, room 359, Pennsylvania Math League Club advisor.

During the holidays members of Key Club spent their time servic-ing the community in various ways. During meetings, students col-ored cards with Christ-

mas and holiday sayings. They delivered these cards to nursing homes around the area. In addi-tion to holiday cards, many students created nee-dle points of stockings and candy canes. These needle points looked wonderful and a very thoughtful present for the elderly. Some club members spread holiday cheer through caroling at the nursing homes in our area. Key clubbers also helped the Kiwanis Club in an annual event

that takes place at the Emmaus Triangle. During this event, they handed out hot chocolate and cookies to those who were celebrating the tree lighting ceremony. Members also visited Sheri-dan Elementary School in Allentown, where they handed out books to all students and mittens to second graders. The books put a smile on all the children's faces. Finally, on Christmas Eve, the Holiday Inn at Trexlertown held an event where they handed out presents and household items to people in need. Key clubbers helped the Cops N Kids organization hand out one book for each child. It’s a heart warming experience to help those in need on Christmas Eve. December was a busy month that was spent helping the commu-nity during the holiday season.

Future Business Leaders of America News

On November 4 and 5, the five EHS officers of the Future Business Lead-ers of America Club (president Mike Lessel, VP Greg Todd, secretary Joe Grispo, treasurer Daniel Amankwatia and historian Hannah Johnson) joined advisors Kelly Bower and Alexis Schultz for the State Leadership Work-shop at Penn State. The students participated in large and small group sessions aimed at igniting innovation and strengthening leadership skills. Additional-ly, they got tips for greater success during the year’s competitive activities, networked with other FBLA members from numerous schools in the state, and made some new friends. Dur-ing one event, the Emmaus group recruited three members of FBLA from Garden Spot High School (Lancaster) —Tolea Grigorutsa, Peter Fortuna and Ethan Spadino — to form a team for the workshop’s Sunday night dodge-

ball tournament. The eight-member team, nicknamed “The Scrubs,” advanced undefeated past all 49 other registered teams to win the entire event. Hurricane Sandy postponed the group’s planned November 9 trip to New York City to tour the finan-cial district and to visit the 9/11 Memorial. The trip has been re-scheduled for March 22, 2013. December 4 saw the entire FBLA Club of Emmaus taking the first step in this year’s competitive pro-cess: the online exam. The test took place in the EHS library after hours. Those members who have additional testing requirements (such as performance tests) will satisfy them at the up-coming Regional Leadership Conference at LCCC on December 18 where the results of the online exam will also be announced. Members who place highly will advance to the state com-petition in Hershey.

Spring 2014 trip to Italy and Greece

In the month of November, students from the Commu-nications 2/ ETV class had a unique opportunity to ob-serve a professional TV film crew in action at our very own school. EHS astronomy teacher, Mr. McConville, was selected after a video submission to be featured in an episode of the premiere HGTV show, “Catastrophe Inc.” The film crew captured the sur-prise and shock of one of his classes as the host walked in to surprise everybody. The experience gave EHS students a behind-the-scenes look into the me-chanics of a real video shoot. A few students had the opportunity to experiment with professional cameras and participate in a discussion with the executive producer and directors of the show. Many EHS Communications students plan to pursue a career in broadcast journalism or film. The chance to talk to people in this field was a fun and exciting expe-rience. The episode of “Catastrophe Inc” is not yet scheduled, but will air on HGTV in the near future.

What is a Hallowed Hornet? Each month faculty and staff members nominate colleagues who they think contribute to a positive and successful school environment. All of the nominees’ names are then placed in a hornet hive designed by Regina Oster, EHS art teacher. At the monthly fac-ulty meeting, Mr. Piperato draws a name from the hive. The winner receives his/her dream breakfast, delivered personally by Mr. Piperato, and a Hallowed Hornet certificate.

October: Beth Stoudt Mrs. Stoudt has been a math teacher at Emmaus High School for thirteen years. She earned her BS in Occupational Safety and Hygiene Management with a minor in Chemistry from Millersville University. She obtained her math teaching certificate and her M.Ed. (with a focus in Instructional Technology) from Kutztown University. Before she was hired by East Penn, she worked as an industrial hygienist for six years. Directly after earning her teaching certificate, she worked for the Boyertown School District for half a year. Mrs. Stoudt teaches Computer Science Foundations, Programming Foundations, and Calcu-lus. She also advises the Computer Club. In her free time she enjoys Zumba classes and spending time with her cats and dogs.

November: Denise Dugan Mrs. Dugan began working at the high school in February of 2006 as a staff assistant. In August of that same year she was promoted to administrative assistant, the same position she currently retains. Before she was hired by the East Penn School District, Denise earned her associate’s degree in Office Tech-nology at Lehigh Carbon Community College. In her spare time, Denise enjoys spending time with her two children, who attend schools in the district; volunteering with the Homerun Club for the girls’ softball team; and attending her daughter’s softball tournaments and her son’s soccer games. Third Annual Shave for the Brave March 22, 2013, at the Emmaus High School Track

Be a HERO for kids with cancer! For the third time since 2010, the track and field team and its head coach Shannon Petrunak (EHS English Teacher) are organizing a pediatric cancer fundraiser through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation on Friday, March 22, 2013. At the Emmaus Shave for the Brave, volunteers will shave their heads for kids’ cancer research by collecting monetary donations. (Barbers will buzz shavees with clippers only, not razors.) All are welcome. Children, adults, students, teachers, coaches, community members, etc. can sign up on the website to go bald for kids’ cancer research! You can sign up as a “shavee” or donate online at: www.StBaldricks.org/events/

Emmaus. Our initial goal for our first event in 2010 was $5,000, and we raised a grand total of $24,566.99 for pediatric cancer research! Then in 2011 we raised $39,920—please help us match this goal this spring. The Shave will be held in the EHS gymnasium and begin at 5:00PM. Shavees who raise $50 in sponsorship will receive a free shirt. If going bald isn’t for you, we’d love for you to join us, celebrate life, and cheer on our shaves. You can also give your tax-deductible gift online or by phone to Event 4416: 888.899.BALD (2253). If you have any questions, please con-tact Shannon Petrunak at [email protected]. History of St. Baldrick’s Foundation On March 17, 2000, reinsurance executives Tim Kenny, John Bender and Enda McDonnell turned their industry's St. Pat-rick's Day party into a benefit for kids with cancer. The three planned to raise $17,000 on the 17th, recruiting 17 colleagues to raise $1,000 each to be shorn. Instead, the first St. Bal-drick's event raised over $104,000! The event had a life of its own and quickly grew into the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for child-hood cancer research. The foundation now funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Since 2000, events have taken place in 28 countries and 50 US states, raising over $87 million. More than 144,000 volunteers-- including over 12,000 women-- have shaved their heads in solidarity of chil-dren with cancer, while requesting donations of support from friends and family – each one becom-ing a walking billboard for the cause. At a St. Baldrick's event, something amazing happens. People who normally shy away from the very thought of childhood cancer find themselves compelled to support this cause after looking into the faces of these brave children who are beaming as their friends and family members proudly display their newly shorn heads. Volunteers and donors see it can be fun to support a serious cause.

East Penn School District implemented the Emergency Call Out System (Edulink) to notify parents and staff of important information relating to East Penn School District and its students. In the event of inclement weather, parents will receive a phone call at approximately 5:30 am, regarding the sta-tus of the school day. Parents may opt out of the Edulink System by removing the phone number in the Edulink field in HAC. If you do not have HAC, send a written note to your child’s school office. Please understand that removal from the systems means you will not re-ceive calls about emergency situations. In the event of inclement weather, the decision to delay openings or close school will be made be-

fore 5:30 am by Dr. Seidenberger, Superintendent of Schools. He will then ac-tivate the Emergency Call Out System (Edulink), as well as the website, infor-mation line and WFMZ stations. For more information regarding when and how this decision is made, please refer to the district website www.eastpennsd.org. Select the tab “About Us,” and then “Info for Parents” from the drop down menu. On that screen, you will then select “Weather Related Closings.”
