Above: Circulation DiagramMedium: PhotoshopShows the circulation pattern of one oor of the house. The darker the space, the more likely it is to be walked on as a result of activities and furniture.

Above: Movement DiagramsMedium: Graphite on trace

Show that the two walls in the design are vital to theunderstanding of the movement within the house. One only goes through the main wall if they desire

to enter the living space.

The case study involved looking at 21st century houses anddiagraming the unique aspects of the specic house. Wall

House I (architect John Hejduk) was unique in the way the wall manipulated movement and views to the outside world.

This area of campus encounters a lot of movement. Theproject was to redesign a space after examining the way

people move through it.

The intention of the design is for the art gallery to reach out tothe people that move around it, as a way for art to become part of the daily routine.

Housing + Film SchoolAnalysis of Site in Bigger Context:

West Oakland

The rst step of the design was to look at the site in a bigger context. The Analysis was taken of a portion of West Oakland in which two

dierent city grids met.

Page 7: Emily Alvarado- Portfolio

The analysis focus was on the type of soil and topography, land use and transportation, the city grid, and vegetation. Apart from the analysis, attentionwas given to the aesthetic of the presentation.

The design of the housing complex was done through variation. 5 dierent modules were created and then used as pieces to be arranged in an attempt to form the 5 oor plans of the houses. 1 house plan was then chosen to be the focus of the project.

This was an interesting way of approaching housing as the program was not considered in the creation of plans and sections.

The structure was tested in SAP2000 to advice us on how thickto build our beams and trusses. Then it was tested by putting

weight on the structure until there was enough stress to causeit to crack.

At the new World of Ecology exhibit at the California Science Center, visitors experience rs-hand the interconectedness of the natural world, through the integration of live animals, hands-on exhibit, and media. The 190,000 square-foot addition to the existing museum contains exhibit spaces organized as series of complex ecological enviroments -- including a 20,000 square-foot rainforest, a 2,500 square-foot desert zone, and an 180,000 gallon kelp forest-- that each teach a dierent ecological principle. A joint venture with ZGF Architects, the addition also includes two oors of administrative oces, and upgraded infrastructure for the entire museum complex. The Center embodies an ecological approach to architecture, revealing many of the systems used to operate the building and sustain the exhibits, to the 1.4 million annual visiotors.
