Instruction Begins January 16Ongoing Admission
and Registration
Welcome to the Spring 2018 Semester of the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute
The Spring 2018 semester of the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute begins Tuesday, January 16, 2018 and ends Wednesday, May 23, 2018. Though instruction begins in January, students can apply for admission into the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute at any time, and typically can register for open classes even after they have started. Complete the application at the back of this Schedule of Classes and either email it to [email protected] or mail it to the address on the application.
Thanks to the Saddleback College Admissions and Records office, we are pleased to provide in-person registration service at the Laguna Woods Village Community Center, the Norman P. Murray Senior and Community Center, and at Lake Forest City Hall. Please see page 2 for a list of the days and times of in-person registration.
The Emeritus Institute Circle: In Summer 2017, we introduced a new giving opportunity for students and supporters called the Emeritus Institute Circle. This level of annual partnership empowers the program to expand its reach, to purchase classroom instructional items, and to build partnerships with local facilities. The individu-als below have joined the Emeritus Institute Circle as Founding Members for which we are incredibly grateful. It is our honor to recognize and thank them in our Schedule of Classes. Join the Emeritus Institute Circle as a Founding Member at any gift at or above $1,000 submitted by the end of 2017.
What Students are Saying: “I’m 67 years old, and I can’t learn like I used to. But the classes I took were great in that the teacher let us learn at our own rates. The teacher was very good and there were really nice people in the class. I liked the classes as they kept my mind active which is a good thing for a senior citizen.” – Richard M. (Foothill Ranch)
“I am overjoyed at having an opportunity to pursue a passion that I thought was lost, in the company of my contemporaries, taught by caring, patient, highly qualified instructors. The classes give me something wonderful to look forward to and the confidence that I can still create beautiful art. Thank you to every-one involved in making Emeritus Institute classes possible!” – Nancy H. (Ladera Ranch)
Dorothy Marie Lowry Distinguished Guest Lecture Series:Join us this semester at the Laguna Woods Village Performing Arts Center at Clubhouse 3 for our annual lecture series, endowed by former Emeritus Institute student, Dorothy Marie Lowry. Associate Faculty, Dr. Greg Jenks, will serve as this year’s instructor/moderator, introducing attendees to people, perspec-tives, and concepts which inspire contemplation, bring together humanity, and encourage academic growth. Enroll in course #22085, HUM 204X – Modern World Culture. Fridays, 9:30am-11:35am.
In Conclusion: The Emeritus Institute binds our community together, and for that reason, it is my sincerest joy to be leading this program. We are grateful for the opportunity to have a direct impact on so many lives, and we look forward to partnering with each of you as we create a culture of lifelong learning in south Orange County.
Sincerely,
Dan Predoehl, M. Ed Assistant Dean, Division of Community Education, Emeritus Institute, and K-12 Partnerships Director, Emeritus Institute

ON THE COVER: Ladybug
photograph by Ed Stewart
An assignment in Laura Hoffman’s intermediate photography class challenged me to find colorful
subjects for close-up images. In our backyard, this ladybug resting on a Kalanchoe plant with pink
flowers framed by light green leaves was the perfect expression of an early Spring morning.

Founded in 1976, the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute was established to create lifelong learning opportunities, primarily for the older adult. A dynamic and wide array of course offerings, expert instructors truly experienced in their field, and a variety of classes located in the community have made the Emeritus Institute extremely popular, and one of the fastest growing programs at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo throughout the years. As the generations of burgeoning baby boomers become senior citizens, the Emeritus Institute continues to change and offer classes that stimulate intellectual, physical, and creative expression for South Orange County residents.
There are nearly 200 class sections offered through the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute that provide lifelong learning experiences in more than 30 different disciplines. These high-quality academic classes are state-approved and available on a non-credit basis. Classes cover a wide range of interests, from accounting, art, crafts, biology, clothing and textiles, English writing and literature, gerontology, health, history, music, photography, Spanish, lipreading, and theatre. Classes are held in more than 30 sites from San Clemente to Laguna Woods, including senior centers, churches, libraries, and community centers.
An integral part of Saddleback College and its educational vision, the Emeritus Institute is a leader in providing challenging and rewarding courses designed for the older adult to accommodate the lifelong learning needs of our community members.
We invite you to be a part of the excitement of lifelong learning. Join the growing number of active adults taking part in the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute.
