On October 12, Sr. José Carlos de Barros Neiva founded Sociedade Construtora Aeronáutica Neiva, initially based at the Manguinhos Airport in Rio de Janeiro. It was created to project and manufacture the BN-1 and Neiva B Monitor gliders. In 1956, it was transferred to Botucatu, where it began producing the Paulistinha (manufactured until 1967), Regente U 42, Regente Elo L 42 and Universal T 25 airplanes. In 1960, Neiva opened an engineering office in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, the headquarters location of the Aerospace Technical Center (CTA), with the object of boosting the growth in research and development of new types of aircraft. In this office, the all-metal, single-engine Universal trainer was designed. During the seventies, in partnership with Embraer, Neiva began assembling under license some of the Piper range of aircraft. In March

Around 1954, the Beija-flor project got under way, a two-seater, stiff-rotor helicopter. The intention was to develop a simple helicopter and manufacture it, even before completion of the Convertiplano project. The Beija-flor was not conventional, containing innovative solutions, the fruit of Prof. Focke’s creativity. The BF 1 Beija-flor made its first flight in February 1958. Compared to similar aircraft of the same period, it presented the advantages of safety, easy handling and simplified construction. With this flight, Brazilian aeronautical engineering reached an important stage, as this was the first helicopter designed and built in Brazil by a mixed team of Brazilian and foreign technicians belonging

October 19th - Indústria Aeronáutica Neiva, a wholly owned Embraer subsidiary, has received type certification for its ethanol-fueled Ipanema crop-dusting aircraft from Brazilian aviation regulating agency Centro Técnico Aeroespacial (CTA). The Ipanema is the first series production aircraft in the world coming out of the factory certified for flying with ethanol. The choice for using ethanol was based on the fact Brazil is a major producer of this type of alcohol, extracted from sugar cane, and automobiles have been using this fuel for more than 20 years. This makes ethanol about three to four times cheaper than aviation gasoline (AvGas). Additionally, ethanol-powered aircraft engines are cleaner and have lower levels of emission than AvGas because they have no lead in their composition, providing for amore environmentally friendly fuel. Neiva has registered the name “AvAlc” (Aviation Alcohol) in Brazil for use of this new fuel.
