ince I last wrote, the Papworth Astronomy Club has hosted two enjoyable talks. In March, Dr. Christopher Lester from theCavendish Laboratories gave us the insider’s view of the Large Hadron Collider. Cavendish Labs is jointly responsible for one of thekey instruments and he was able to give us an update on results to date. In April, Rob Sandford from the University of Warwickpresented a novice’s guide to rocket science, following by a survey of new countries and commercial entities entering the space race.

On Wednesday 7th May, we have our final meeting of the 2014 spring season. The speaker will be Dr Robin Catchpole from theInstitute of Astronomy in Cambridge. This will be our last meeting before the summer break. Activities will resume in August withthe club picnic. We are also planning a special event to celebrate the club’s 20th anniversary and more information will be providedonce the details are confirmed.

As usual, the meeting will be at the Vinter Room, Papworth Everard at 7:30PM. The Vinter Room is at the entrance to VinterClose (it is the building with the clock tower). Entering Papworth Everard from the south, take the first left after the traffic lightsinto Elm Way, past the fire station, and then take the second left into Vinter Close. Sat nav users should enter CB23 3RU. Themeeting room is accessible to wheelchairs.

More information about the club is on our Web site ( .You can also email Peter Sandford on [email protected] or phone 01480 830729.

Around 18 months ago there was a meetingset up at the hub with BT, Taylor Wimpey andResidents regarding the infinity still awaited insome areas. We were told at that meeting thatproperties built before December 2012 wereincluded in the plan for inifinity and they werelooking at completing on programme by Sep-tember 2013. I live on the end of Sterling Way,Upper Cambourne and have lived in my prop-erty ever since it was first built in 2009. I amstill waiting for infinity to hit my area and yetwhen I phone BT to enquire, they just say it'snot available yet. We were promised in thatmeeting that it would be sorted within a rea-sonable time frame and yet again they've let usdown and just fobbed us off. Are there no oth-er residents fed up about this? Can we not de-mand another meeting with them?

I see all around me, new homes being builtand every time a new cul de sac is released tobuyers, my internet speeds seem to go down -I'm convinced they've got us all running off thesame cabinet. I have been thinking about set-ting up a business from home and cannot dothis because I cannot rely on the internet speedsthat would be required for me to do my work.

Is there any way, we can get an update onwhat's happening in Upper Cambourne withthe homes that have been here from the begin-ning?

Kind regards,Joanna Law122 Sterling WayUpper Cambourne

THE CAMBOURNE CRIEREach month a team of 9 or 10 volunteers produce this magazine. The process gets more and more difficult asCambourne has grown. There is so much demand for space now that some will be disappointed.Anything not included can however be available on the Cambourne Crier web site. If you would like to offer sometime for this worthwhile project please get in touch.

One other need is for a distributor each month to receive the magazines and sort into rounds and deliver to teams. This would need to be a car owner and needs somewhere to receive the delivery (a garage or shed) a volunteer isneeded but expenses are paid. The magazine is delivered on the first full weekend of each month, (not Sunday 1st)so a regular commitment is necessary. Delivery people are sometimes required but there is a waiting list for this paidrole - age 13 plus.

Pastoral Thoughts

This month we will be having some of our folks go to a singles retreat in Germany hosted by Rhineland Baptist church. The themeis confronting the darkness and will also feature a fun activity of a ropes course through a forest at night. We must all confrontthe darkness at different times. Both the simple external darkness, that is outside forces evil people and groups. Also the moredifficult inner darkness, that being the desires and attitudes of our own flesh and hearts. And you cannot fight darkness with moredarkness but only with the light. Even a small candle can make a difference. I know many of you out there have been strugglingand stumbling in this world. Isn’t it time to come to the light, so you can see clearly to a better path. Now on that Sunday I will not be here as I will be there to assist and look after the folks going and possibly baptize one of ournew converts in the same church where I was baptised back in 1992. I have arranged for another preacher to cover the serviceson May 25th so regular services will continue.

Scheme this year in Cambourne. The event, a group openingof all six gardens, will take place on Sunday 01 June between11am and 5pm.

Visitors can start at any garden andadmission is £5, children free, all in aidof the seven charities supported bythe NGS. This selection of six, five inGreat Cambourne, one in Lower, aregreat examples of how imaginationand gardening skill can be combinedin a very short time to create beautifulspaces. The grouping includes a gardeninspired by the French Riviera, complete witha miniature meadow, a foliage garden and a stunningmodern treatment featuring Astroturf. The Scheme also has anew garden opening for the first time this year at GranaryWay: Mrs Jackie Hutchinson.

As you can see, we are short of gardens in Upper and LowerCambourne, so if you think you might like to open under theScheme in 2015 and help towards some very deserving causes,do let me know at the email address below. I’d be delightedto hear from you.

The NGS has a reputation for strict entry requirements, however, criteria are more relaxed for a group opening likeours. We have to be organised by the end of August to beready for the famous ‘Yellow Book’, so don’t delay getting intouch if you’re considering it!

Cambourne has raised just over £1,200 for the NGS sinceopening for the first time in 2011. Last year, the total raised was£373, contributing to a total of £49,000 raised by

Cambridgeshire gardens as a whole, this in turncontributing to a total of £2.1 million

donated to charity by the NGS last year.

The largest NGS beneficiaries areMacMillan Cancer Support, MarieCurie Cancer Care and Help theHospices. In all three cases, theNGS is the biggest single donor to

these charities. The other charitieswhich benefit are Carers Trust, The

Queen’s Nursing Institute, NTGardening Careerships, Parkinson’s UK,

Perennial and the Garden Museum.

In 2014, 3,800 gardens will open under the Scheme, whichdates back to 1927. All are welcome to our own local event inCambourne. It’s a great day for a great cause.

We would like to point out that Cambourne’s group openingunder the National Gardens Scheme will take place on Sunday01 June this year and not Saturday 07 June as published in lastmonth’s edition of the Crier, sent to us in error.

RECIPE FOR MAYBaked Ricotta with

a chilli kickWe should now well andtruly be into the seasonwhere we crave lighter, brighter food and I thinkthis recipe hits the briefamply. Served with a saladit’ll make a great lunch ordinner or you could placeamongst accompanimentsfor a barbecue if theweather allows. Oh and didI mention that it’s incrediblysimple to put together and isdelicious – it shouldn’t bethis easy!!Ingredients:250g pack of ricotta1 fresh chilli minced1-2 cloves garlic thinly sliced1 sprig fresh thyme5 whole cloves (though youcould sprinkle some groundclove)1 cardamom pod of seeds1 tsp cumin seedsOlive oil50g finely grated parmesancheeseSalt and pepperMethod:Preheat the oven to180°C/210°F. Lightly grease a

small ceramic dish or non-sticktin. Tip the ricotta out of thepack into the dish keeping itwhole and intact. Stud thericotta with the herbs andspices and scatter over thefresh chilli. Sprinkle over theparmesan cheese and drizzlewith olive oil and season withthe salt and pepper. (Take carenot to use too much extra saltas the parmesan is quite saltyalready.) Place it in the ovenfor about 15 mins until thecheese has melted and isbubbling slightly. And that isit! The great thing is (as I try todo with all my recipes) thisreally is a matter of personaltaste and you can try using arange of different herbs andspices. Why not try removingthe more savoury elementsand add some chopped updried fruit like raisins, apricots, sour cherries and adrizzle of honey for a sweetalternative. Serve with freshfruit for a quick pud.Everything can be preparedahead and popped in thefridge until ready to bake. Goon – give it a go! LouiseWilson

Book Week CelebrationAt the end of March wecelebrated our love of bookswith a book weekcelebration. We started the

week by enjoying anopportunity to hearbooks read by otherteachers in the schooland then partneredclasses shared bookstogether. After schoolwe had a very excitingbook swap, where the

children brought in books from home and traded themfor a different book.During the week the children were involved in severalbook related activities. Foundation Stage read a bookby Jill Murphy ‘On the Way Home’ and thought aboutwhat scary characters might appear on the way homefrom the park. Year 1 and 2 looked at the books‘Aliens Love Underpants’ and wrote characterdescriptions and songs about the aliens from thestory. Year 3 and 4 looked at Myths and Legendsfrom Roman times andwrote some of their ownand Year 5 and 6 lookedat the life of Roald Dhaland wrote biography ofhis life.We had a very excitingvisit from a storyteller,Tony Wilson. He helped each group in his workshopto create their own oral stories and recorded themfor us to listen to. Finally, we dressed up as ourfavourite book characters and shared these witheach other.

MowingWe have started our summer mowing around the site. Wemow for two reasons: keeping paths through grassy areas cutand mowing some short areas of grassland to improve itsquality and provide a variety of different grass heights forinsects and feeding birds.

Dogs on leadsNow that the birds have started nesting please remember tokeep your dogs out of sensitive areas. These include long grass, bushes and the lakes. Keep to paths and short grass areas andyou won’t risk disturbing birds from their nests or tramplewildflowers. Please also remember that children will be outplaying in the green spaces and a playful dog bouncing up tothem may seem very scary and put them off dogs for life. Ifyou are in any doubt about your ability to recall your dogplease keep it on a lead.

Plant sale and open gardensThis year we are timing our plant sale to be on the sameweekend as the Cambourne Open Gardens, so it will be onSunday 18th May from 11am to 3pm. Hints, Tips and Info for RunnersFrom the Run Leader of Cambourne Runners – Run in England Group

Well done to everyone who took part in the Cambourne 10k last month. The weather was great for running and the event wasenjoyed by 900+ runners.

Thank you to those who took the time to support the runners along the route and, of course, thanks to the organisers andvolunteers that make the Cambourne 10k such a success every year.

I’m proud to say that many of the Cambourne Runners took part, and achieved a great deal of personal success, reaching goals thatthey had set and trained hard for. Last month also saw some of our members completing the Brighton and London Marathons, raising funds for charity along the way too. One runner also took on the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon in South Africa proudlywearing his Cambourne Runners vest. Many of these people had never taken part in races run before joining the group, they haveall achieved so much and continue to do so every week we train.

If you have been inspired by the Cambourne 10k, and would like to run it next year, take on the challenge - do something new thisspring and go out and get running!

Well, it has been a busy time here at Cambourne FC. Over the last few months, our individual teams have gone from strength tostrength, putting in some sterling performances on the field. Behind the scenes, there has also been a host of activity going in tohelping the club grow, excel and mature further ahead of the new season.

One of the biggest changes occurred last month at the EGM, where we met with the intention of electing a brand newcommittee. All roles were filled and with this come fresh faces to the team, bringing a wealth of experience from various fields. The committee is now headed up by Barrie Wilkinson. Barrie currently runs the CFC Soccer School, having been involved in thisfor several years – his eldest son graduated into the U7s this year whilst his youngest son is still in Soccer School. Barrie said, “Iam excited to be more involved in the club which forms an important part of my family’s life here in Cambourne. Watchingsuccessive teams of Soccer School kids flourish and begin their football journey before moving on to the competitive leagues hasbeen extremely rewarding. I believe passionately that Cambourne FC, along with Cambourne Eagles, are at the heart of thevillage alongside our excellent schools, and the new committee is very keen to form closer links with all of these partners. Watchthis space!''

Following the election of the new committee, we can now announce the launch of our brand new website. Please check us outat www.cambournefc.org. Most of the content has been moved across from the old website but there is still some more workto do. However, long term, we hope this will be a much improved way for you to keep up to date with all the Cambourne FCnews. In the meantime, we would like to invite parents and players to send us any photos or videos that you have of previousmatches, events or tournaments. Please email us at [email protected] and we will get them added!

Next is the news that our players have been waiting for: a date has been set for our end-of-season Trophy Day. This event willtake place on Saturday 21 June at the Cambourne Sports and Social Club from 1pm, where all of our players will receive atrophy as reward for their hard work throughout the season. In addition, each team will also award additional trophies toindividual players in recognition for their outstanding contribution to their team. Trophy Day is an opportunity for players, managers, siblings, families and teams to celebrate Cambourne FC's success together. We hope to see as many of you there aspossible!

The new Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support. Without you all, this clubwouldn't exist. This really is your club and we cannot wait to be a part of this exciting journey.

A Festival of Running – continued

The Cambourne 10k and Fun RunIt was the sixth annual Cambridge Cambourne 10k andFun Run on Sunday 6th April and hundreds of runnersput on their Lycra and trainers, to run aroundCambourne. Although the sun was out it was also a bitwindy in parts making the course and good challengingone for the runners.“This is a great local 10k race and was my 5th insuccession. I had a good run considering the windyconditions which were not too bad except for 7thkilometre along side the two lakes which is alsoundulating.” Said Roger Holliday the first finisher fromlocal running club BRJ Run and Tri (Huntingdon).Alongside the main running event, 200 or so youngsterand beginners enjoyed a 1 mile Fun Run to mark afestival of running. As well as watching and cheeringthe runners the spectators also had range of activitiesand delicious refreshments to keep them entertained.“I like that the Cambourne 10k attracts lots of runnersfor who this is their first ever 10k race – everyone ismade to fell very welcome.” Suzie Hall of BRJ Run andTri, and that welcome extends to the spectators “wework very hard to provide a great day out for runnersand their families, with entertainment on site, greatprizes, high quality support from trained marshalls.”event with chip timing and we also have an attractiveoff road and rural course.

Candidates for the Bourn Ward district council election on 22nd May 2014 Vote from 7am until10pm at the Hub - this may be updated on the Crier web site due to tight deadline -

Tim Hayes - Independent - CambourneResident in Cambourne since 2009, for almost 2 yearssince May 2012 Tim has represented the Cambournecommunity on the Parish Council. He regularly attend-

ed and contributed to Leisure and Amenities, Finance and Policyand later, Planning Committees. He fought to improve amenities inUpper Cambourne such as placement of litter and dog bins. Hefought hard and continues to fight with BT Openreach to have thepromised rollout of BT Infinity completed. He fought and continuesto fight for better bus services that will reach all our communities, and he has played an active role in supporting road safety for ourmany children. He has challenged the police closure of the publicdesk in Cambourne and helped win a reprieve. Tim’s nomination asa candidate enjoys the support of no less than five Parish Councillorsas well as former Parish Deputy-chair Roger Hume.

Mark Hersom - Liberal Democrat - Papworth EverardI am presently a member of the SCDC for Milton, but have lived inCambourne until very recently. The recent Local Plan has been afriend to few and a detriment to most, with the west of Cambridgebearing the brunt of this illogical plan and leaving many bruised andbattered. The only way now is to question decisions at every step.As a district councillor it has always been my philosophy to work withpeople for the benefit of residents. In short I would:1. Work for local democracy and a community where residents areactive and engaged in the decisions that affect them, includingworking closely with our local Parish Councils and include them indistrict council decision making2. Force greater accountability and transparency into our districtcouncil. Scrap the undemocratic cabinet structure so favoured by thecurrent administration, in favour of a more open and democraticcommittee system.3. Work with the County Council and local district councils to providevalue for money for our residents. We need to work hard to build onthe City Deal and work with the City for the benefit of our residents."

Gavin Clayton - Labour - CambourneI have raised my family within Cambourne’s very firstshared equity housing plot since 2000 and was involved inthe earliest stages of community development. I am veryaware of Cambourne’s successes, but also the challengesthat face it as it grows and matures as a settlement and

community.Other families deserve affordable opportunities to make a home and afuture too. So we must ensure that the Council secure legally bindingcommitments from developers for significant community facilities andinfrastructure to accompany expansion of homebuilding in and aroundCambourne; resources for building a Youth Centre Provision, accessfor all residents to affordable Public Transport , Post Office provision, greenspace ecology and GP services are all needs that will dominatethe coming three years.Let’s stay positive as a community and pull together to ensure ourvibrant and mixed population secures what it needs as it grows.

Des O’Brien - Independent - BournDes O’Brien lives and works in Bourn Ward and is thechairman of StopBAD. Des believes strongly in the value ofcommunity and is committed to the concept of localism –where local people decide on local matters. Since learningof the District Council’s plans to site 5,000 new houses in

Bourn Ward, Des has led a campaign to demonstrate that newsettlements on Bourn Airfield and in West Cambourne will damage thearea beyond repair. Long established villages in the ward will becomeoverwhelmed by traffic, and the fledgling community of Cambourne willfind itself swallowed up by an urban ‘ribbon’ development stretchingfrom Hardwick to the Caxton Gibbett roundabout. Des has demonstratedthat he has the energy and commitment to restore the power to decidethe area’s future to the people who live and work here. A vote for Desis a vote for action and real representation

David Morgan - Conservative - CambourneLiving in Cambourne and previously being your local District Councillor, where in 2010 I resigned to work abroad, the goodnews is I am back. Those who know me know that I will speak up for the local community.I am sure that all the other candidates will be making claims about what they have achieved, previously, and tell you what you want to hear. I don’thave the space to list everything I want to say but I would like to state that I do not support the local plan as I believe the development around

Cambourne invades the Identities and infrastructure of Bourn, Caxton, Elstisley, Croxton, Cambourne, and also Caldecote. Previously as a District Councillor I wasinstrumental in stopping a planning application of Bourn Airfield and we successfully won an appeal by the Developers. I can’t stress enough you need a ConservativeDistrict Councillor inside the party to support you. If elected, I will be able to attend all Council meetings, in addition and extremely important attend the local Conservative Councillors Group meetings where I am ableto speak up for you, no other candidate will get that chance to do this. “Be in it to Win It”

Lister Wilson - UKIP - RoystonI represented Cambourne on Cambridgeshire CountyCouncil for 12 years up to 2013. I was responsible forfounding The Vine School (which my Grandson attends),The Blue School, Jeavons Wood School and Cambourne'sSecondary School. I also ensured your Church could be

built by finding £500,000 towards the cost. I also found £20,000 tobegin the building of the Youth Centre. I attended most ParishCouncil meetings in all the villages, often the only Councillor there. Iled the Campaign against Cambridge City getting a Congestion Chargeso saving thousands of people millions of pounds. I knew that if I lostmy Council seat, the Planners and Developers would then get togetherand implement their plans for massive expansion of Bourn andCambourne - because the one Councillor who demanded caution was"out of the way". This is exactly what has happened. Elect me backonto the Council to defend your interests - I promise to continue towork very hard for you.

Gaynor Clements - Green - ElsworthGreen issues are supra-political. The urgent matters whichaffect us, from climate change to the growth of food poverty,go beyond party politics. I believe the main political parties,at both local and national levels, are fiddling while Romeburns - perhaps we all are. We need to stop chasing economic

‘growth’ and think long and hard about what that means. An economybased on house building and road building is illusory. Our general levelsof consumption are out of hand: instead of thinking of new ways toaddress the demands for energy, we all need to address the demandsthemselves. Turn the lights off before they are turned off for us. I am anexperienced, pragmatic lawyer by profession who will question the short-term, blinkered policies of the local establishment. We all do what we canto be green, but we need support. Why is the government consideringrewarding local communities who allow fracking for fossil fuels, but notgiving them similar financial incentives for renewable energy? Likewise, more house building means more strain on already over-stretchedinfrastructures.Let me challenge these issues on your behalf – it’s notrocket science, it’s common sense. Vote Green.
