For larger power needs the Powerpack rectifi er once again demonstrates Eltek’s technological leadership. The Powerpack is a true three-phase rectifi er, providing unity power factor without having to connect to a neutral conductor. Cost of ownership is optimized through compact and reliable design with high effi ciency. Powerpack rectifi er is available in three different versions, optimized for different input voltages: 480VAC, 380/400VAC and 208/240VAC.

Bulk power and distributed power solutionsThe Powerpack rectifi er is an optimum building block for the big Central Offi ce 48VDC power plants, which are typically ranging

from 2000A to 10 000A. In our bulk power solutions, the separate rectifi er and distribution cabinets are connected via an overhead 48VDC bus structure. Whilst in our distributed power solutions,

the rectifi ers, primary distribution and any slave control units are in one cabinet, making it a self-contained power system.

In a bulk power system, an entire 10 000A plant can be control-led by one single Smartpack control module. Using a high speed

CAN-bus with a proprietary protocol for system communication, signal wiring between cabinets is minimized. Load sharing

between rectifi ers is also done via the CAN-bus, independent of the control module.

In a distributed system, several control modules are connected to the same CAN-bus, forming a fl exible and expandable

control system, yet seen as one large control unit from the Windows or Web graphical user interfaces.

For more information see page 27.

12

Eltek’s Remote Power concept represents a very cost effective way of providing stable DC power to remote sites. The concept is in line with the industry standards by using existing twisted pairs to transfer DC power to remote sites.

Using Remote Power removes the need for new cabling in the ground, annual utility fees and remote site DC power systems with battery backup. The benefi ts of Remote Power are thus numerous ranging from reduced hardware expenses, easy maintenance routines and usually faster roll-outs.

Remote Power is achieved through safe transfer of higher DC voltages (±190VDC) on standard twisted pairs. At the remote site, this voltage is converted back to 48VDC to supply the telecom equipment. For more information see page 32.

TURNING YOUR COPPER INTO GOLD

REMOTE POWER

The Remote Power concept utilizes the copper in the ground to transmit power from central sites with battery backup. Utilizing high DC voltage, though still safe, typical DSLAM equipment can be up to 10 kilometers away from the Central Offi ce plant.

DC POWERSYSTEMS

Eltek’s new range of large three-phase systems is based on the state-of-the-art Powerpack 48VDC/220A three-phase rectifi er module. The rectifi er operates without any neutral conductor connected, and has unity power factor over a wide load range. CAN-bus communication and a modular control system approach increases reliability and drastically simpli-fi es system expansion. Typical applications for these systems are large Central Offi ce power plants, with system rating between 2000A and 10 000A.

In bulk power systems, separate rectifi er cabinets, distribution cabinets and batteries are all connected to a large overhead 48VDC busbar rated for the full system current capacity. Distributed systems are made by paralleling several “self-contained” cabinets, each containing rectifi ers, control unit and load/battery distribution. Current rating per cabinet is typically in the 1200-2000A range. This approach allows for signifi cant cost savings on the 48VDC bus, and in many cases it reduces the initial investment on a system that is intended to grow in size over time.

Powerpack systems can be utilized at large Central Offi ce 48VDC power plants from 2000A to 10 000A. 2000A cabinet with controller can be used as a direct partial replacement for old ferroresonant rectifi ers in existing sites.

The rectifi er is available in three models, each optimized for different input voltages: 208/240 VAC, 380/400VAC and 480VAC. The control system is based on the Smartpack, with different confi gurations and add-on units based on the actual system solution and customer functionality requirements. Cabinets are available with rectifi ers only (bulk power) or with a primary distribution included, both with 2000A capacity.

KEY FEATURESState-of-the-art technologyHigh effi ciency and advanced functionality with state-of-the-art rectifi er technology and digital control.Advanced communicationStandardized Eltek user interface and functionality by using the Smartpack controller. REMOTE POWER

Remote Power is a concept for distributing DC power from a Central Offi ce over existing twisted pairs to remote cabinet locations. The concept is perfect for use in broadband applications with new “high-bandwidth services.” Using the existing copper in the ground between the Central Offi ce plant and remote site, power can be delivered to the xDSL equipment (DSLAM), which is usually located closer to the end user.

Remote Power reduces the cost of both installation and operation, and increases the speed of xDSL roll-out. With Remote Power equipment installed, you become independent of local utility suppliers and make use of existing centralized backup systems and spare wiring in your copper network. There is no need to implement local AC feed with local rectifi ers and local backup batteries in remote cabinets.

Operating cost is kept to a minimum, with no extra bills from local utility providers and battery maintenance only at Central Offi ce.

In the Central Offi ce plant power is taken from the main -48VDC system and fed to DC/DC converters. These convert the vol tage to ±190VDC. Effectively 380VDC but never more than ±190VDC referred to ground for safety reasons.

From the DC/DC converters the power is fed to VA limiters. The VA limiters ensure safe operation through limiting the power over each channel (output) and monitoring for overload or earth faults. At the remote end located up to 10 kilometers from the Central Offi ce the voltage is converted back to -48VDC for the DSLAM or other active components.

REMOTE END CONVERTERThis unit is a DC/DC converter designed to be used in the remote end of a Remote Power system. A Remote Power system can be used to power telecom equipment over existing twisted copper pairs, typically DSLAMs or other remote equipment.

The unit consists of 5 galvanically isolated converters with gas tube surge protection and input current limitation to prevent overloading of the VA limiter. Each channel is equipped with a blocking diode (Or-ing diode) for redundancy and selective overvoltage protection. The input is reverse polarity protected with a diode bridge rectifi er. The channels share the load automatically. The converter features current limiting on the input, i.e. the converter will never overload the Central Offi ce supply (VA limiter). This also means the output power is derated linearly with the input voltage giving a maximum of 380W output power for maximum input voltage (400VDC), and 250W at typical input voltage (250VDC) considering the voltage drop in the feed lines (twisted pairs).
