Game NotesLast Time Out: In their most recent contest, the Soaring Eagles suffered a 5-0 loss at home to the Warriors of Lycom-ing College. For the Warriors, the win over Elmira kept Lycoming’s record unblemished as they improved to 7-0-2.

National Ranking: Elmira’s goalkeepers have been tested often through the first half of the season. Opponents have taken 189 shots against the Soaring Eagles, putting 90 of those on frame. However, Elmira has done well keeping the ball out of the net as EC’s goalies boast a 9.29 saves per game average, the sixth highest mark in all of NCAA Divi-sion III men’s soccer.

Series History: Elmira and Utica have faced each other 12 times since the 2002 season. The Soaring Eagles have won seven of those 12 meetings, but the Pioneers have won two of the last three meetings, including last year’s 2-1 defeat of Elmira in the regular season finale. Additionally, six of the 12 games have been decided by a single goal, four of which have been won by the Soaring Eagles.

Looking Ahead: Following today’s game, the Soaring Ea-gles will travel to Alfred, NY for a non-conference tilt with Alfred State on Wednesday, October 1st at 6:00 p.m. Fol-lowing Wednesday’s contest, Elmira will return to Campus Field for an Empire 8 Conference game against the Bomb-ers of Ithaca College on Saturday, October 4th at 3:00 p.m.

Game NotesA Look at the Pioneers: The Pioneers of Utica College enter today’s contest with a 3-3-2 record and a 1-0-0 Empire 8 Conference record. In their last contest, Utica dropped a heartbreaker to Hamilton College, 2-1 in overtime. Utica scored the game’s opening goal in the 28th minute but sur-rendered a goal in the 80th minute which forced overtime. The Pioneers then allowed the game-winner just 2:02 into the overtime period.

Shane’s Got Game: At a towering 6’6”, fourth-year striker Shane Ruffing ’15 is an intimidating figure on the pitch, and rightfully so. The Rochester native boasts an Empire 8 Conference leading eight goals and is averaging 1.0 goals per contest which ranks 13th in all of NCAA Division III men’s soccer.

Road Woes: Utica has been superb playing on their home turf, owning a home record of 3-1-1. However, their play on the road this season has not been as good as the Pioneers are still searching for their first road victory. Away from home, Utica has gone 0-2-1 and has been outscored by their opponents, 8-3.
