Exalted Ruler Alyssa Santos We are heading into our fifth month of the 2014-2015 Elk Year and I am happy to say I feel like I can breathe a little easier. It has been BUSY! As of writing this, we are headed to National Con- vention in New Orleans. I’m heading out a couple days early to take in New Orleans since my last visit was pre-Katrina in 2003. This trip makes my fifth time there and still I haven't seen eve- rything. With a pair of solid walking shoes and a sense of adventure, I'm sure to check more things off of my New Orleans list. Back to lodge business... Our membership is growing and I am so happy to report that we have some enthusiastic new members who are jumping in and getting involved. In June Bill Creighton and his committee held another successful bowling tournament and dinner dance. THANK YOU BILL! We are fortunate to have such a good example of a long standing active member in our lodge that year after year raises money and puts on an event that is so well attended. The Emblems did a wonderful job on the Father's Day Brunch. We had the 1st of 4 Purple Fez Party Fundrais- ers to benefit our building fund. It was a fun night for all and it was fantastic to see representation from my fel- low ER's from Torrance, Santa Monica, and Westchester and members from their lodges as well as Redondo Beach. Yolanda’s Masquerade Party benefitting the building fund was beautifully decorated along with food, good company and really good live music. We welcomed our newly installed SVP Dan Baccelieres on his offi- cial visit to our lodge. Thanks to all the chairmen that submitted their reports. Many members attended Gardena Night at Dodger Stadium . Co-captains Reyne Rocha and Marie Pacheco headed up the Relay for Life " Elks for Life " Team with several of our members at Serra high school the same weekend as convention began. A HUGE “thank you” to Rodney Tanaka for doing such a great job with our Flag Day celebration and to Dan Medina for taking care of our veterans at our last visit to the Long Beach VA hospital. We have some fun things in store the next couple of months including a Luau, Family Picnic and the 2nd Purple Fez Party Fundraiser which is going to be a Casino Night Theme. If you haven't gotten your Fez hat, you've still got time to get one. Contact Marcya Holguin Est.Loyal Knight at a Wednesday night meeting. As always, if you haven't been to the lodge lately, please consider attending a meeting soon so you can see what's happening that doesn't make it into the Elkshorn. Leading Knight

Matt Almaraz

Hello My Fellow Elks,

This has been a busy time of

year for us Elks here at the

Gardena Lodge 1919. Many

of our Elks took charge in several activities such

as the bowling tournament with Bill Creighton,

Rodney Tanaka running our Flag Day meeting,

our Exalted Ruler (Alyssa) running her first of

many Fez (hat) parties, to Yolanda Wu's mas-

querade birthday party, Maria Pacheco and

Reyne Rocha (PER) who are our captains for

our "Relay for Life" team at Serra High School.

And then our officers, heading out to New Or-

leans, to participate in the grand national lodge

convention. We always have an outstanding

hamburger night every Tuesday thanks to the

kitchen crew: Kimo, Ernie, Richard, Scott N.,

and Carl that works so hard. You should join us

on Tuesdays and every second and fourth Fri-

day of every month for Fish Fry, thanks to Ar-

nold Ramirez and Pete Alvarado and all they're

kitchen crew working hard at the fish fry.

Thank you to Dan Medina and his crew for

they're visit to the Long Beach VA Hospital.

Thanks to Francisco Cacheo and his crew for

hot dog and movie day for our youth activities.

And thank you Tish McCauley for taking the

lead in utilizing our lodge gratitude Grant to pur-

chase carpets to replace at Denker Elementary

in two of their kindergarten classes. And many

thanks to Diane, Harry, the front office with Bob

and Jennifer, and to all the Wednesday night

meeting crew who help with the tickets, we

thank you. A special thank you to Jax Sargent

for all her hard work on the Elk Horn and our

social media.

I look forward to having some great activities

and fun in August and September.

Hope to see you at the family picnic or at the

lodge.

Sincerely your Leading Knight.

Homecoming Speech Highlights by SCCD VP Dan Baccelliere

CHEA President Floyd “Skip” Henke’s slogan this year is “Feel the Glow of Elkdom”. Now some of you may be saying, “What

the heck does that mean?” But I’m willing to bet that most of you in this room already have felt it. It’s that smile from the

third grader as you hand her a dictionary, the joy of that 12yr old hitting that 20th free throw, the pride of a high school sen-

ior earning that much needed scholarship, the tears in the eyes of the parents, whose child just took their first step, thanks

to our therapists and the silent thank you, in the eyes of that veteran saying, “Thanks, for not forgetting me.”

The President has chosen five key points for his VPs known as “Skip’s Recruiters” to pass on.

Membership is the key to a sustaining an organization. Sure we can get by with just a few stalwart members carrying the

load but eventually our resources will deplete. It is our responsibility to provide interesting and meaningful events.

Activities - No one joins this Order, just to pay Dues, so we need to provide the inspiration so they can appreciate Elkdom

the way we do.

Public Relations – How do we do that? One way is by publicizing our great deed so our communities know what we are

about.

ENF – What is our greatest achievement? Elks National Foundation. Foundation: a basis upon which something stands or is

supported. We currently have an endowment of close to 600 million dollars which supports the ongoing programs such as

Community Impact Programs, (8M+), State Projects (8M+) Scholarships (4M+) Veterans (1.5M) Hoop shoot, Drug Awareness,

Americanism etc.

Major Project- One place we outshined all others last year was in the Major Project. We continue each year to strive to

surpass the amount contributed at the previous year’s Association Convention. Our goal this year will again be to surpass

the great achievements that our “Piggy Bank” Program has made in the past years and to reach even greater heights at our

Exalted Rulers March. This year we set a new record, raising over 3.2 million dollars. Our district finished first in the state

with a total contribution over $102,000.00. Through your generous contributions, we continue to help those in need Walk,

Talk, See and Play.

I’ve discovered a few different ways to contribute, that costs you nothing, yet provides money towards the Major Project.

One way is to link your Ralphs card to CHEMPI through their Community Contributions program which Westchester has

done and earned over fifteen hundred dollars last year just shopping. The new cycle will begin in Sept. Another is to use

Goodsearch.com and Goodshop.com. When you use these three systems, money is donated to the MP. You need to buy

groceries and surf and shop online anyway, so why not benefit the MP while you do.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is the finest Fraternal Order in America. We have reached this goal through

good leadership and continued hard work by many members. We will not remain number one simply because of our past

accomplishments.

Let us all confirm our faith in the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity. Let us renew our faith in America.

Let our communities know that the Order of Elks is an American organization that loves our country and honors our flag.

Through hard work, positive thinking and good careful planning, we can grow and magnify our accomplishments and “Feel

the Glow of Elkdom”.
