Elizabeth Lewis (PI), Jon Pedersen, Daniel Claes, & Tiffany Heng-Moss. Four-year grant to continue

scholarships to graduate students in the Master of Arts with emphasis in science teaching (MAst) program,

a 14-month secondary science teacher education and MA program that educates highly-qualified

secondary science teachers to teach in high-needs school districts. Phase II also includes a longitudinal

study of new science teachers who were provided a Noyce scholarship (2011-present).

Elizabeth Lewis (PI) (Submitted: 7/21/14; $598,451). A proposal for a 5-year grant to investigate: (1) high

school science teachers’ ESS instructional and assessment practices; and (2) the ways that schools and

Improving Teacher Quality: Enhancing Nebraska 6-12 Science Teachers’ Knowledge of Earth Science

Content, Mindi Searls (PI), Leilani Arthurs, and Elizabeth Lewis (co-PI). (Start Date: 2/3/14; $82,042). A

two-year grant proposal to provide Nebraska secondary teachers with professional development in Earth &

space science education.

2. University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Office of Research, Layman Seed Program Grant: Moving Beyond

Marginalization: Investigating Earth & Space Science Education, Elizabeth Lewis (PI) (Start Date:

6/01/2013; $9,970). Grant to investigate factors that influence students’ opportunity to learn Earth and

space science in Nebraska high schools.

3. University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Kelly Fund, Development of Biochemistry Undergraduate Students'

Writing and Graduate Students' Teaching Skills, Paul Black (PI), Sue Ellen DuChenne, Elizabeth Lewis

(co-PI) (Start Date: 6/01/2013; $24,900). Two-year grant to: (1) determine how professional development

in reform-based teaching practices affects doctoral students’ instructional strategies, as well as how the

sophomore students develop their scientific writing, argumentation, reasoning, and data analysis skills;

and determine (3) the effects of the professional development program on doctoral student’s teaching

skills, knowledge, and beliefs, and (4) the effect of such instruction on students’ scientific argumentation,

reasoning, and critical thinking skills.

4. National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program Grant, Jon Pedersen, Elizabeth

Lewis (PI since 9/1/2012, Co-PI from 9/1/10 to 8/31/2012), Dan Claes, Tiffany Heng-Moss (Start date:

9/1/2010; $1,194,387). Five-year grant to award full scholarships to graduate students in the Master of

Arts with emphasis in science teaching (MAst) program, a 14-month secondary science teacher education

and master’s degree program that recruits and educates highly-qualified secondary science teachers to

teach in high-needs school districts. Coordinated and submitted annual reports, arranged external

evaluation activities and visits, revised budget for extension (6th) year, supervised MAst program and

research assistants (since July 2011), and worked with external evaluators. Research investigates the

what predicts the presence and level of Earth and space science access? This study is the first step in a line of

research that was proposed in a National Science Foundation proposal. A portion of this proposal was later

revised and funded as a UNL Layman seed grant in June 2013 to conduct a case study of Nebraska Earth and

space science education.

Date: 6/1/14; $148,858). Proposal to facilitate a planning partnership among the University of Nebraska-

Lincoln, Crete Public Schools, Crete, Nebraska, and Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center. The objectives

inclusive needs assessment that includes Crete’s Spanish-speaking residents as well as its native English
