What is DALI®?DALI is an acronym for “Digital Addressable Lighting Interface”created by the lighting industry

It is a published open standard part of Europe’s StandardEN60929 and has been a NEMA Standard (243-2004) in theUnited States since 2004.

DALI is the only published open standard global intelligentlighting protocol.

Teng has been involved in installations and commissioningof DALI systems in the United States since 1999.

Why DALI®? Why Now?Lighting is an EXISTING MULTI BILLION DOLLER MARKET withminimal competition outside of the major lighting controlmanufacturers and their proprietary offerings.

Specifications are calling for lighting control features includingdaylight harvesting and demand response and occupant lightingcontrol.

The old industry standard of analog 1-10V control fordimming electronic ballasts is being replaced by DALI withlower system cost and significantly more functions.

DALI Ballasts are not expensive!!!!!

Codes and StandardsCalifornia’s Title 24-2008, which became effective January 1,2010,requires demand-responsive lighting controls in retail buildings witha sales floor area larger than 50,000 sq.ft. Demand-responsive isdefined as “control that reduces lighting power consumption inresponse to a demand response signal”.

Section 7.4.5.1 of ASHRAE 189.1 requires peak electric loadreduction capability. The building must have automatic systemscapable of reducing peak electric demand by at least 10%, notincluding standby generation.

Application ExamplesCapitol One’s West Creek Campus and McLean, VA Office Building.Original Tridonic control system and server based interface controlling10,000+ fixtures and 17,000+ DALI ballasts. Installed in 2000 thru2005.

Application ExamplesTeng and Associates Richmond, VA Office. We were able to retrofit the existing builders grade 18 cell paraboliclight fixtures with DALI ballasts and integrate lighting control into ourFacility Automation System. We now have HVAC, Access Control, ………………………………..

Application ExamplesTridium’s U.S. Headquarters, Glenn Allen, VA.Tridium is currently leasing building that was built in 1990 and theowner has implemented minimal (if any) energy conserving upgrades.Teng and Associates has been contracted to provide professionalengineering services including developing existing conditionsbaselines and recommended improvements. Each improvement will beprovided with an implementation cost and associated payback.

Utilizing the Tridium system for the baseline

Things to Watch Out For•Systems that claim to be DALI but are proprietary controllers with minimal DALI components

•Rapid/Programmed Start lamp holders must be utilized

•Be sure to select the proper ballast and lamp combination. A T-5 ballast will not work with T-8 Lamps and visa-versa.
