GATHERING

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

GATHERING SONG As We Gather at Your Table (ELW 522)

1 As we gather at your table,

as we listen to your word,

help us know, O God, your presence;

let our hearts and minds be stirred.

Nourish us with sacred story

till we claim it as our own;

teach us through this holy banquet

how to make Love's vict'ry known.

2 Turn our worship into witness

in the sacrament of life;

send us forth to love and serve you,

bringing peace where there is strife.

Give us, Christ, your great compassion

to forgive as you forgave;

may we still behold your image

in the world you died to save.

3 Gracious Spirit, help us summon

other guests to share that feast

where triumphant Love will welcome

those who had been last and least.

There no more will envy blind us

nor will pride our peace destroy,

as we join with saints and angels

to repeat the sounding joy.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

The presiding minister leads the prayer of the day.

E pule, Kakou. Let us pray.

A brief silence is kept before the prayer.

Gracious God, your blessed Son came down from heaven to be the true

bread that gives life to the world. Give us this bread always, that he may

live in us and we in him, and that, strengthened by this food, we may

live as his body in the world, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

The assembly is seated.

WORD

God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.

FIRST READING: 1 Kings 19:4-8

First Kings chapter 18 describes the contest between Elijah and the

prophets of Baal. The contest proves that the LORD is God, and

afterward Elijah orders the killing of the Baal prophets. Angered by the

deaths of her prophets, Queen Jezebel threatens to kill Elijah. This

reading finds Elijah fleeing, fatigued, and in utter despair.

A reading from 1 Kings.

4[Elijah] went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat

down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is

enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my

ancestors.”5Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep.

Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” 6He

looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of

water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7The angel of the LORD

came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise

the journey will be too much for you.” 8He got up, and ate and drank;

then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to

Horeb the mount of God.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 34:1-8

1I will bless the LORD| at all times;

the praise of God shall ever be | in my mouth.

2I will glory | in the LORD;

let the lowly hear | and rejoice.

3Proclaim with me the greatness | of the LORD;

let us exalt God’s | name together.

4I sought the LORD, who | answered me

and delivered me from | all my terrors.

5Look upon the LORD| and be radiant,

and let not your faces | be ashamed.

6I called in my affliction, and | the LORD heard me

and saved me from | all my troubles.

7The angel of the LORD encamps around those who | fear the LORD

and de- | livers them.

8Taste and see that the | LORD is good;

happy are they who take ref- | uge in God!

SECOND READING: Ephesians 4:25--5:2

Christians are called to be imitators of God. This does not mean

Christians are perfect. Rather, the Spirit is at work in our lives so that

our actions and attitudes genuinely reflect the love and forgiveness we

have received through Christ and his death.

A reading from Ephesians.

25So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our

neighbors, for we are members of one another. 26Be angry but do not sin;

do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and do not make room for

the devil. 28Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work

honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the

needy. 29Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is

useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give

Page 7: Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion with ...

7

grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,

with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31Put

away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and

slander, together with all malice, 32and be kind to one another,

tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. 5:1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2and live in love,

as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and

sacrifice to God.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL: John 6:35, 41-51

After feeding more than five thousand people in the wilderness, Jesus

teaches them regarding the true significance of this remarkable sign.

The holy gospel according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord.

35Jesus said to [the crowd,] “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to

me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be

thirsty. 41Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I

am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42They were saying, “Is not

this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How

can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43Jesus answered

them, “Do not complain among yourselves. 44No one can come to me

unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up

on the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be

taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father

comes to me. 46Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who

is from God; he has seen the Father. 47Very truly, I tell you, whoever

believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the

manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread that comes

down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am the

living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread

will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is

my flesh.”

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

APOSTLES' CREED

The Nicene Creed or the Apostles’ Creed may be spoken. The Nicene

Creed is appropriate during Advent, Christmas, Easter, and on festival

days; the Apostles’ Creed during Lent and at other times.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.*

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

LITURGY OF HEALING

The presiding minister addresses the assembly with these words.

Friends and neighbors, sisters and brothers, I invite you to stand and

receive a sign of healing and wholeness in the name of the triune God.

Those who wish to receive laying on of hands may stand in place. The

minister blesses them one at a time. The minister may also make the sign

of the cross.

Name ___________________, in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ,

be strengthened and filled with God’s grace, that you may know the

healing power of the Spirit. Amen.

Receive this sign of the ☩ cross as a symbol of forgiveness and healing

in Jesus Christ. Amen.

The assembly stands, and the presiding minister continues.

E pule, Kakou. Let us pray. Living God, through the laying on of hands

and anointing, grant comfort in suffering to all who are in need of

healing. When they are afraid, give them courage; when afflicted, give

them patience; when dejected, give them hope; and when alone, assure

them of the support of your holy people. We ask this through Christ our

Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Rooted in Christ and sustained by the Spirit, we offer our prayers for the

church, the world, and all of creation.

A brief silence.

For the church of Christ in all its diverse forms in these divisive times.

For bishops and pastors, for lay leaders and faithful worshipers, for new

church starts, and all communities of faith exploring new ways of

ministry for the sake of the gospel. For congregations facing difficult

decisions about their future. E ka Haku,

e aloha mai.

Page 12: Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion with ...

12

For the health and well-being of creation. For shade trees that provide

refuge from the hot summer sun. For rivers, reefs, and oceans

contaminated by pollution and for all who lack clean water. E ka Haku,

e aloha mai.

For those called to positions of authority in our legal system, we pray.

For judges, lawyers, law clerks, and court employees who ensure the fair

administration of justice. For corrections officers and prison chaplains,

that they would deal mercifully with those who are incarcerated.

E ka Haku,

e aloha mai.

For all who cry out to you in their affliction. For exiles, refugees, and

others who face long and difficult journeys, uncertain about the future.

For all who mourn the death of a loved one. For all who are sick,

especially all those whom we name in our hearts and whose names we

now speak aloud …. E ka Haku,

e aloha mai.

For this assembly gathered around your table, we pray. For those among

us who bake bread and prepare the vessels for our communion

celebration. For those who bring the food from this table to those who

are homebound or hospitalized. E ka Haku,

e aloha mai.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

For those who have been raised to eternal life, we give thanks. With

Dominic and all the saints we praise you for the bread of life that keeps

us in your love forever. E ka Haku,

e aloha mai.

We lift these and all our prayers to you, O God, confident in the promise

of your saving love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING

DIALOGUE

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE

Holy God,

our Bread of life, our Table, and our Food,

you created a world in which all might be satisfied by your

abundance.

You dined with Abraham and Sarah, promising them life,

and fed your people Israel with manna from heaven.

You sent your Son to eat with sinners

and to become food for the world.

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore,

his life given for us

and his rising from the grave,

we await his coming again to share with us the everlasting feast.

Page 16: Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion with ...

16

By your Spirit nurture and sustain us with this meal:

strengthen us to serve all in hunger and want,

and by this bread and cup make of us the body of your Son.

Through him all glory and honor is yours,

Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit,

in your holy Church,

both now and forever.

Amen

LORD’S PRAYER

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.

SENDING SONG O Living Bread from Heaven (ELW 542)

1 O living Bread from heaven, how well you feed your guest!

The gifts that you have given have filled my heart with rest.

O wondrous food of blessing! O cup that heals our woes!

My heart, this gift possessing, in thankful song o'er flows.

2 My Savior, you have led me within your holiest place,

and here yourself have fed me with treasures of your grace;

for you have freely given what earth could never buy,

the bread of life from heaven, that now I shall not die.

3 You gave me all I wanted; this food can death destroy.

And you have freely granted the cup of endless joy.

My Lord, I do not merit the favor you have shown;

and all my soul and spirit bow down before your throne.

4 Oh, grant me then, well-strengthened with heav'nly food, while here

my course on earth is lengthened, to serve you, free from fear;

and bring me home to praise you where none can peace destroy,

where I will ever raise you glad songs in endless joy.
