the wheelAs most of you know, this past summer I was planning for my Au-gust Uptown Charlotte wedding, and I couldn’t have asked for a more amazing wedding day. All of the plans came together nicely, the ceremony was unforgettable, the reception was a blast with family and friends, and I am now Mrs. Laura Gainor! Such a mem-orable time. And now I have even more exciting news to share with you. When I moved to Charlotte four years ago, I never knew what would happen for me in this city. I have been blessed to have so many opportunities and to now be married! The last four years -- with my various jobs working in graphic design, photography, online marketing and management -- have led me to realize it is now the perfect time to take this helpful knowledge and venture off on my own, following my passion for photography and design. I couldn’t be more thrilled to now introduce you to my next big step, Blue Wheel Photography + Design.

eI have been lucky to work with my now-business partner, Brent Gulledge, photographing weddings and various events throughout Charlotte. Brent was previously a teacher here in Charlotte, and a few years ago he also wanted to express his photography talents. He has utilized his skills to fullest, becoming an amazing photographer who reliably captures the most unbelievable wedding and kid moments. Brent was also my wedding photographer, capturing the most amazing pho-tos of my Uptown wedding.

After these last couple years working with Brent, he and I have made a unique team, bringing our own sense of style to each event. We recently realized it was a great time for us to create Blue Wheel Photography + Design and take our partnership even further. Our clients have enjoyed working with our unique personalities and approach to photography. It is important to have a photographer that will allow you to be yourself and

In my columns to come, I will talk about different photography adventures and feature vari-ous creative Queen City wed-ding locations and venues. Get ready to be introduced to a more artistic side of what our city has to offer in these areas. Thank you for continuing to pick up each issue of Elevate Lifestyle and for reading my column. I am looking forward

to meeting more great people through this venture and to con-tinue to work with more of you through Blue Wheel Photography + Design.

cosmos cafeIt’s the inevitable debate. Anytime a group of more than two gets together to make dinner plans: what are we eating? One wants pizza, and another is dieting and calls for sushi. One wants steak, while another is pinching pennies and would much rather grab a burger. No matter what restaurant is chosen, somebody isn’t hap-py.

Cosmos Cafe in uptown has been solving that problem and restor-ing harmony to large parties for 12 years. The hip eatery offers something for just about anyone, from hefty burgers to choice-cut steaks; and from gourmet wood-fired pizzas to pasta and salads. The restaurant even offers a fresh sushi counter.

“We can please any palate,” General Manager Tim Arnett said.

“Everything is made in-house, so we can do whatever our custom-ers want.”

dining

29

eWhen a restaurant of-fers such a staggering array of choices, the ini-tial fear can be that the establishment is good at many things, but great at none. However, a French-trained and New York City-tested chef -- and a fanatical devotion to quality among staff members -- ensure that no one at Cosmos falls victim to the standard “mediocre steak at a pas-ta place” syndrome.

“It’s all about attention to detail. There’s no reason you can’t have a burger, a steak, sushi, soup and salad, and do it all well,” Arnett said.

“As you can imagine, our servers go through quite a bit of training. Not everyone who comes in can put in the kind of ef-fort to learn the lunch, dinner and martini menus; it weeds out those who won’t make the effort pretty quickly.”

That martini menu Arnett refers to is no small shakes either -- at more than 40 choices, it mirrors some restaurants’ food menus.

“Our bartenders learn pretty quickly that they’re not just pour-ing shots and popping beer caps,” Arnett said.

Page 18: Elevate Lifestyle: Holiday Gift Guide November 2010

30

eThose martinis are half-price on Wednesdays at both the original uptown location and at the Bal-lantyne location, which opened in May. How-ever, the uptown location remains the signature Cosmos experience, even if only for the decor -- somewhat chaotic, but unifying as a whole. From the grand entryway to the perfectly round bar, and from the giant mural over

the open kitchen to the custom tables, the restaurant features several focal points.

“We wanted to offer many different focal points,” said manag-ing partner Gus Georgoulias.

The decor also features rotating paintings from local artists. Georgoulias said he made it a point to make Cosmos a true Charlotte institution, featuring not just local art on the walls, but local produce in the kitchen.

That devotion to the community has been paid back by the city, as Cosmos has become a hip spot for everything from bachelorette to corporate parties, and regular faces pack the restaurant all week long.

“We offer an upscale dinner in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. You don’t have to sacrifice one for the other,” Arnett said.

31

e“You can laugh out loud, and not have to sit up straight in a stuffy dining room.”

“I would put anything on our menu against anyone else’s in town,” Arnett added.

While offering a food choice for everyone, the uptown loca-tion also offers an ambiance for everyone. Downstairs, the bar scene is jumping; but that’s just a few feet from the inside deck, where a more traditional upscale dinner experience can be had. Upstairs, cigars and scotch are on the menu in the lounge, while

more dining room tables offer an overheard view of the bar.

“The space is as eclectic as the menu,” Arnett said.

Uptown Location: 300 N. College St. #101, 704.372.3553 Mon. - Fri. 11AM - 2AM / Sat. 5PM - 2AM / Closed Sun.

Ballantyne Location: 8420 Rea Road, 704.544.5268Mon. - Sat. 11AM - 2AMSun. 11AM - 2PM Brunch / 3PM - 2AM

Please join me to help celebrate their 12th anniversary from Nov. 9th - 14th, they’re doing a $12 3-course dinner menu and $12 featured bottles of wine at both locations.

chaunquita fisherIntroductionMy name is Chaunquita Fisher. I was born in Charlotte, North Car-olina and now reside in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m a graduate of North Carolina Central University, where I majored in Apparel and Textile Design. It was during undergraduate school that I had the oppor-tunity to study abroad at American InterContinental University Lon-don, while interning with designer Ben de Lisi. My next step is to open a boutique in Atlanta, and my ultimate goal is to establish an international fashion house and expand to mens’ wear.

On what fashion do you mainly focus?Women’s wear. I admire the aesthetics of our bodies, which is why I enjoy designing apparel that compliments every woman.

eWhat inspires your de-signs?My life is my inspiration. As I grow physically and spiritu-ally, my style changes and I begin to create clothes that reflect the way I feel -- that’s why I say my designs will refine your body, soul and mind. It’s all about growth! Life is not stagnant, so every season you will see fresh, completely new styles!

Do you also style for shows, clients and the like?Yes, I have a few clients that I style.

Are you running your de-signs as an independent contractor/referral or small business? Tell us how the recession is affecting your business.I am an independent con-tractor, and I began getting more clients within the past two years, so I don’t think the recession has affected my growth; plus, I do alterations as well, and that really helps!

fashionable, fierce and feisty fall locksThe How-to Guide for Hair that Looks Fabulous this Fall

The fashion trend in hair this fall/winter season is full, lush and shiny locks that look relaxed and fuss-free. There are some se-crets to achieving this all-important beauty task, and I will share mine with you.

First and most importantly, beautiful hair requires work; but there are hair products and tools that make the job a little easier. Healthy hair does not just happen, but with a little TLC, you can have red-carpet hair that is the envy of all your friends.

Still in full demand are loose, flowing waves that look slightly messy with just a few strands out of place. If you love short hair and just need a little update, wispy layers with side-swept bangs can give you exactly what you want, with very little upkeep.

fashion

39

eWhatever style you are seeking, healthy hair is the secret to achieving the fierce and feisty locks you desire. But trying to find the correct hair care products and tools can feel like try-ing to locate a needle in a haystack. How many times have you purchased hair care products that promise the world, only to be left with disappointment? After countless experi-ences, I want to give you the secrets on the products that work on any hair type.

Just like serum for our faces, there is a se-rum for hair that delivers nonstop condition-ing and fabulous results 24/7. White Sands has developed a leave-in treatment with truly visible results in just minutes called, “The Cure.” I absolutely love this product because it can be used day or night and can be used on dry or wet hair. The Cure mends split ends, repairs damaged hair fi-bers and restores moisture, while making your hair stronger, smoother and shinier. I love this product, and it is an absolute steal at $29.99.

For adding volume to your hair, David Babaii for WildAid created “Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier.” David is a famous hair-stylist who has teamed with Kate Hudson to create this unique, eco-friendly formula that is perfect for all hair types. I love this product because it can also be used on wet or dry hair, and it does amazing things to limp or fine hair, all the while condition-ing and protecting. This product is defi-nitely a steal at $9.99.

Page 23: Elevate Lifestyle: Holiday Gift Guide November 2010

40

eNow, for that all-important question – what is the best styling tool? H2pro 300 Styling Iron offers more styling power and allows you to achieve straighter, shinier, frizz-free hair in less time. I love this product because it is all-in-one. This multi-functional iron straightens, curls and flips -- which is perfect for the girl on the go. I love the flash heating (ready in only sec-

onds) as well as the sleek design, which allows me to use the tool easily. This styl-ing iron gives my hair shine without damage. This is a must-have, and it give you years of fashionable hair-styles. H2pro 300 retails for $160.

With these simple and easy secrets, you will have hair that will be the talk of the town. Remember, healthy hair requires work, but the end result is worth the time investment.

I have taken the guess-work out of searching for the best products and narrowed it down to only three items that will give you the fierce and feisty hair you have been longing for.

Next month, I will share with you the hot picks in scents, and the beauty and fashion must-haves that you will want on your Christmas list.

Until then ... Write me with any questions in all things beauty and fashion at [email protected].

keeping fit for the holidaysThe holidays are coming! I love this time of year when families get together to share in their love for one another. Cousins, aunts and uncles journey from afar bearing gifts and smiles. Even though I prefer the warmth, I have grown appreciative of autumn because of the less smoldering climate and astonishingly colorful scenery. Though not traditionally a fan of turtlenecks and gloves, I do adore bundling up and getting cozy with those I love, like my family.

I come from a rich culture of cuisine and camaraderie. Around the holidays, we gather around the dinner table, coffee table or wher-ever, and eat together, chat, and debate issues or simply discuss the day-to-day. We watch movies, play cards, and usually do these things in excess ... all while eating; and eating foods that are oh so yummy, but oh so fattening! Here are some gift ideas for the holidays that can be used to keep you and your loved ones fit throughout the season!

e“Shape Ups” ShoesThis new rave from Skechers is ergonomically designed to tone your muscles and promote weight loss, all by walking! The sheer shape of this fashion trend also helps with your posture. Buy them online at www.Skechers.com or any Ske-chers retailer, but buyer beware: prepare to spend a pretty penny for these hot items. Prices begin at $110 for the Shape-Ups and their sister style, the Tone-Ups, begin at $55.

Medicine BallsNot to be confused with an exercise ball, this ball is typically the same diameter as a basketball but is weighted. Originally used for rehabilitation purposes, the medicine ball has made a strong showing in the fitness scene, being used in gyms everywhere.

Exercise BallsExercise balls are different from medicine balls because they aren’t balls that you physically hold. Instead, they are huge, inflated balls that you sit on and do various exercises, like sit-ups and weight circuits. Just sitting on the ball helps with your abdominal area, so imagine what you can accomplish! As an added benefit to purchasing an exercise ball, most are sold with a DVD of exercises and/or a CD of music to enhance your workout.

Pull-up BarThe pull-up bar isn’t just for men anymore! A discreet pull-up bar can be installed in a doorway in your house for the obvi-ous pull-ups or chin-ups, but they can also be placed on the ground for sit-ups, dips and push-ups. This versatile product works the shoulders, core, back, arms and chest. Typically made of steel, the pull-up bar is inexpensive (prices start at less than $20) and can hold up to 500 pounds.

Page 25: Elevate Lifestyle: Holiday Gift Guide November 2010

44

eBeyond the purchasing of concrete items, there is always the trustworthy method of exercising at a gym; and if you know your gift recipient well enough, a gym member-ship may be a good idea!

Trust me, I understand how arduous it can be to not have seconds at the Thanksgiving dinner table. I understand how draining it is to continu-ally convince yourself not to have that slice of apple pie with ice cream ... but it will be even more chal-lenging to do at the holi-days. Now is the time to put that gym membership to use and kick your me-tabolism into high gear! If you are uncomfortable buying someone fitness

equipment or a gym membership as a gift (and rightfully so), then do it for yourself! Don’t let those holiday meals sit on those hips -- buy yourself or your loved ones some of the lat-est fitness equipment and defy the odds!

Til next time….Fitness Editor, Monique Douglas

Page 26: Elevate Lifestyle: Holiday Gift Guide November 2010

tis the seasonWith the correlation of the holi-days and winter months, we tend to pack on a few pounds – or as I like to say – put a little insulation on for the colder weather. ‘Tis the season of weight gain, and tidings of comfort and joy … and comfort food.

Though animals, we are not whales that coat ourselves with fat – nor are we bears who must hibernate for the cold months. We don’t pile up on food so we can sleep away the winter. We hu-mans, on the other hand, pile up on food when we go out to holiday parties, as well as mama’s house, the in-laws’ house, and even the office. I am trying to decide if the women who always bring baked goods to the office are sweet … or evil. But despite all this holiday weight gain, there is no food more fatten-ing than a boyfriend ... yet nothing tastes better. While off falling in love, it’s easy to fall off your diet and exercise habits as well. Be-

nightlife

47

ecause like the holidays, when dating, all you typically do is eat, and eat out. “What do you want to do?” “I don’t care … let’s go eat.” There are a lot of calories in love. At least sex burns calories.

Having someone in your life can change your life; from your routine to your priorities … to your body. And it changes your nightlife too. You essentially stop caring as much about how you look when you go out. And when you’re not out together, you even dress a little less provocatively and stop noticing who notices you. Because sometimes it’s nice to feel com-fortable being comfortable – and to have someone at home who thinks you look the hottest in Christmas morning pajamas anyway. As long as you’re happy with your body -- and the person who consistently and exclusively caresses your body is happy -- then who cares what on-lookers think? And who cares who’s looking? Who are we even getting dressed up for anyway?

Page 27: Elevate Lifestyle: Holiday Gift Guide November 2010

48

e

But when women who are “taken” do pay attention to the at-tention they’re getting from other guys, it brings the onslaught of questions ... Is she an attention whore? Or, is her boyfriend just not giving her enough attention? Either way -- there’s a problem if a woman needs validation from anyone other than herself to feel hot. Meanwhile, there’s also the “tailgating ten” that comes on dur-ing football season. Between the drinking, tailgate casseroles, chip dips, and stadium food, we probably average as many pounds a game as the Panthers put on the board. And by the way, rumor has it that Delhomme won a VMA like Taylor Swift, but Kanye West intercepted it before he could accept it. (OK, that was a joke.) So unlike Santa, holiday weight gain is not just a myth. So when you sit on Santa’s fat lap and he asks what you want for Christmas, respond with “will power.” And speaking of Santa, why don’t we start telling children that Santa fed-exes their presents. That would be more believable anyway … just say-ing.

holiday fun times!Need a break from your holiday shopping? Well, Charlotte is full of cheer this time of year, and there are plenty of things to see and do to help celebrate the season!

esince it opened in 2005. Blue Sky Décor founder, Joe Bran-dano, is nationally recognized in the commercial decorat-ing industry. Brandano lends his expertise in decorating to Rockefeller Center, Graceland and the Billy Graham Library on an annual basis.

Festive holiday music will begin at 5:30 p.m. around the circle at Piedmont Town Center. The magic of the season will truly begin when the switch is flipped to light the tree at 6:30 p.m.

Christmas Town U.S.A. in McAdenvilleFifty-four years and counting, Christmas Town U.S.A. is the premier light display for the holiday season. There is a breathtaking display of deco-rations and illuminations that will surely fill you with holiday spirit -- a great place to take the family or that special someone. Outdoor theatre and circus acts, rides, and even a jousting tournament will keep you amazed and entertained throughout the day. Grab a turkey leg and a medieval brew and set out to explore the cottages, castles, kitchens and pubs, or browse the many treasures that the ar-tisan marketplace has to offer. There are even camel rides and a petting zoo for the little ones! You can visit this unique marvel any weekend from Oct. 10 through Nov. 22.
